Spring Fisherman Aesthetic: Outfit Ideas & Tips

Holy moly, where did March go in such a hurry? In honor of poisson d’avril * today I thought I’d have a little fun with some fish-themed and fisherman aesthetic styles.

*French for April Fool’s, translates as “fish of April”

The “fisherman aesthetic” is one of this spring’s big style trends, but as with the Coastal Chic trend from a a couple of years ago, I think it’s a wearable and timeless casual look. It incorporates many of the same elements, such as simple clothing styles, raffia accessories, neutral shades, and texture.

I like that scalloped hem knit top, which hints at a fisherman sweater without being too literal. The fish earrings and shell motif bracelet add playful elements.

If you prefer a slim-cut jean style that’s not a straight or skinny, I’m seeing lots of options in this “kick flare” style. (It’s basically a bootcut; length can vary from just above the ankle to almost-to-the-floor.) Madewell has a good one on sale here. This mid-rise version from J.Crew has possibilities too. And if jeans aren’t your thing, a pair of linen pants would also work here too.

  1. So fun! Makes me want to go to the beach right now. Love the fun accessories and the fishy tees. Whimsical, but sophisticated enough for us femmes d’un certain age…

  2. Fun post for spring! I have bought tees and dresses from Marushka and find them to be a great option for cute, budget friendly pieces with fish, nautical, lake and outdoor designs.

  3. Fisherman, not my aesthetic at all. BUT… speaking of Poisson d’Avril, I got notice that Sézane is having a $20 off discount today. I’ve never ordered from them but have been wanting to order the Gaspard in Rosewood. I placed the order today. I love pink, but as a blue autumn, rosewood really is my only good pink. Very few retailers sell anything in rosewood, but Sézane does. And they even threw in a cute little tote bag in the order as une surprise! Looking forward to trying this sweater. 🙂

  4. Good to see that Fisherman Sandals are back on trend as always have been a staple in my travel wardrobe as love to explore off-the-beaten paths and found them perfect for most terrains offering protection of the foot. -Brenda-

  5. Sardines are a big motif in Portuguese souvenirs, since it had been a huge part of their economy. All the fish t-shirts reminded me of that. You found some really fun and pretty accessories! Thanks for some new views on a classic look.

  6. Oh my gosh, love it all! The fishy earrings, the sardine tee, fisherman sandals, the bandana—thank goodness I already have a raffia/straw tote and charming straw boater, otherwise j’aurais un budget un p’tit peu serré! Merci bien, Susan!

  7. These styles are so cute! I was wondering if you have any tips for those of us who have a pinky toe that wants to stick out in sandals like the fisherman style. I know socks would help but that would make my ankles look chunky. I have been skipping so many sandals for years because of this issue.

  8. Love your articles and themed looks! You provide such inspiration. Any suggestions for a capsule wardrobe for an African safari?
