Weekend Bits & Bobs: Stylish Fisherman Sandals & More
Remember that old saying about March weather, “in like a lion, out like a lamb?” We’ve been getting a bit of both lion and lamb this week, with alternating cold/wet/windy and sunny/mild/breezy days. I’m always on the lookout for pieces that work well for transitional season dressing, as they tend to be some of the most versatile in my wardrobe. Fisherman sandals can be a great season-spanning style: wear with socks on cooler days, and without once it gets warmer.
Nautical & nice: fisherman sandals
I’ve been on the lookout for a pair of fisherman sandals that are comfortable but not too clunky, and polished enough to go from Coastal to Smart Casual. And I wanted a (mostly) closed-toe style.
These from Everlane tick all of the boxes. They’re VERY comfortable right out of the box, and good-looking. There’s a cute round low heel which (for me) makes them more comfortable than a completely flat style. They’re available in 4 finishes; I opted for the suede. (They run true-to-size, so opt for your usual closed-toe shoe size.)
Here are a few similar styles worth a look:
Dolce Vita | Free People | Vince | Bernardo | Pikolinos
Skincare favorites: now in travel sizes!
I’m often asked how I pack skincare and toiletries for travel. While I will decant products into travel containers, I love it when my favorite products are offered in small or sample sizes. And now three of my “Holy Grail” skincare products from By Brian are available in travel sizes!
- Re-Creation Lip Treatment. I’ve been using this regularly for a few years now, and make sure I never run out. This treatment moisturizes and plumps my lips, eliminates flakiness, and helps my lip color last longer. I apply on lips and just outside the lip line (I think it really helps prevent those fine lines around the mouth.)
- Illuminate & Contour Eye Treatment. After using this for a few days, I noticed less puffiness and crepe-y skin on my lids.
- Firming Neck & Chest Creme. This really does smooth the skin on my neck, and reduces texture. I use twice daily.
These smaller sizes are great for travel, but you can also save on full sizes when you purchase the Lip-Eye-Neck Regenerative Set. Just for my readers, Brian is offering an additional 5% off on the travel and full-size sets for a limited time with code Susanfaves5 ! Discount also applies lipsticks/tints, and lip glosses. (Check out this post to see lipsticks swatched.)

On a health note…
Measles seems to be spreading nationwide. If you were born before 1958 and either didn’t have measles as a child, or don’t know what your vaccination status is, you might want to check with your doctor about getting an MMR booster. Measles is a highly contagious disease that can have serious complications. Because I’m planning to travel in a few weeks, and I fit both criteria above, I got my booster yesterday. It was free with my Medicare plan.
This is so cool…
A pair of bald eagles here in the mountains of Southern California has just welcomed new chicks! You can check in with them here:
Bon weekend!

These sandals are on my wishlist (and were last year.) Deciding between the rum and the white… I’ve shopped Everlane since they started but for a number of years they were in the wilderness…just really bad styles. In the last year or two they have come back to their roots of simple, modern cuts and I’m here for it, though I wish they would expand their color selection.
I was born at the end of December 1958 and got my measles vaccine yesterday as I’m also traveling in a few weeks. My pharmacist said it’s reccomend to get the full series of two shots if you were born between 1957 and 1968 as the vaccines in those year didn’t contain a live virus.
Linda, yes! (raising my hand) That’s me. I had to have the “repeat” a couple years ago because I was in that very group.
I have an older pair of Everlane fisherman sandals with a closed back; love them and do find them indeed great for spring/summer travel, particularly in France where temps can really vary. I love the suede and am going to look at those! And re: the measles – we had friends over last night and three out of the six of us (my spouse and I included) have already had the booster, after checking with our doctors. The other three are intending to do so (all mid-sixties and thus in the susceptible age group). Thank you for looking out for your readers!
The eagle cam has been inspiring me as nothing else can lately. So amazing to see the level of “parental devotion,” aka instinct, esp during this past week of snowstorms.
Re measles, I’m extremely worried for the infants among us, including my new little grandchild in Houston. Too young to be vaccinated, too vulnerable to the outbreak.
I was born in 1959 and had measles at age 4 before the vaccine was available, along with my 1-year-old brother. I remember being very sick and that my parents were very worried about us. Measles is not a disease to take lightly. Please get vaccinated.
On a lighter note, love the fisherman sandals!
Love the sandals — trying to decide on color. I think the slight heel sharpens the look. If you were born before 1957 or have certain diseases, you don’t need the MMR vaccine. Those born before 1957 are presumed to have been exposed or had the diseases. You should ask your doctor to do a titer before getting the vaccine as it will tell you whether you need the vaccine or not. (My doctor would not even authorize the titer given my history.) You should not get the MMR close to getting other shots, so don’t do it when you get your covid booster. (Presumably your pharmacy knows this.)
Even some of us born in 1957 or before did not get measles (my sister and I never did, though we did get chicken pox & mumps). So each person may have different risk factors, which is why I suggest asking your doctor.
Susan, you might check out BARED. I just purchased Fisherman sandals from them, a wonderful Aussie brand with an emphasis on support, STYLE and quality. Their shoes are elegant and built to last and most allow a personal orthotic. A bit expensive, but they offer multiple sales throughout the year that brings pricing to a competitive point.
The woven handbag with a top snap looks adorable and practical.
LOVE the Eagle chicks: will the last egg possibly still hatch?!
Thanks, Joan, for the mention of BARED, a brand unfamiliar to me. Does anyone else have experience with this brand? I like the look of their fisherman’s sandal better than any I’ve seen, including Susan’s picks.
Bared makes beautiful shoes, recommended by podiatrists for foot support and stability. They are stylish and so well made, a little heavier than some, and longer wearing.
Hi Elizabeth, I am in Australia and bought the Bared Fisherman sandals for our summer, I’ve been very happy with them. I particularly like that the heel strap is slightly padded.
As Paula mentioned Bared shoes are slightly heavier than some other brands but still comfortable.
I love the way you put outfits together. I particularly love your color combinations, inspires me! The montage at top is fabulous….want every piece.
Thanks so much, Linda!
We have a third eagle chick now! Triplets!
Yay!! They are so adorable when they are little and fuzzy.
I asked my doctor a couple of years ago about my immunity generally, since the antivaxxers were really gaining steam. She checked my titers & said my measles immunity was good (I don’t know if I was vaccinated, but remember having measles at age 4, in 1961). She did say I had no immunity to hepatitis B & gave me a vaccine for that. Next time I go, I’m asking her to run another check. I would be so worried about infants who can’t get vaccinated yet! And today, the CDC announced they are going to study the (nonexistent) link between vaccines & autism. It’s like these people are actively trying to kill us!
I have no idea whether I have had measles or was vaccinated. I think the latter but I have no parents anymore to ask. I bet I as vaccinated. We had about 100% vaccination rate in the Netherlands when I was a child.

Like the blue blazer and striped sweater.
I was born in 1959, got vaccinated for measles, though I had chicken pox, mumps and rubella before vaccines were available for them. I’ll probably get a MMR just in case. I also have family members who are anti-Covid vaccine. 🙁
