Smart Casual Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe for London and Paris
Hooray, it’s time to pack! I’m so excited to be traveling again, especially this time of year. The weather forecasts look delightful, and I already have lots of fun activities and meetups planned. But before it all goes in the suitcase, here’s my (early) fall travel capsule wardrobe, for two weeks in London and Paris.
My own travel wardrobes have evolved over time. While each trip is different based on climate, locale and activities, I’ve learned to pack in a way that suits me, and without stress. Some of you may prefer to pack fewer pieces to travel as light as possible, while others may want more options. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, though I think no matter your travel style, there are tips you can follow to pack lighter and smarter.
This time I will be taking a medium-sized suitcase to be checked, and a backpack to carry on. (There will be empty space in the suitcase to bring home gifts and other shopping finds.)
My fall travel capsule wardrobe for 2 weeks
Although I’m expecting mild conditions, I know the weather can be quite changeable this time of year, so lightweight layers are key. I started with a brown, denim, and ivory neutral base, and added color with tops and scarves. I don’t anticipate having anything on the agenda that will require me to be more dressed up than Smart Casual.
So let’s dive in:
Shoes
I always start with shoes, because they’re the most important aspect to get right! If your feet aren’t happy, you won’t be happy. This time, my choices were complicated by the fact that I’ve been having a flareup of tendinitis in one foot, so needed firmer soles to provide adequate support and not aggravate the condition.
- Sneakers. Normally I’d go with a sleeker style, but that platform sole provides the firmness and support I need at the moment. Mine are from Clergerie, purchased in Paris earlier this year; here’s a similar style that’s more budget-friendly.
- Oxfords. I’ve had this pair for around 8 years and they are still one of my most comfortable. Also Clergerie. Here’s a similar style.
- Loafers. These were so comfortable right out of the box! They run 1/2 size large.
Bottoms
Though I have traveled in the past with fewer pairs of pants, I’ve decided that 4 is the magic number that provides enough variety, and usually allows me to skip the laundry. I’ve managed to avoid duplication, but each of the pants works with most of the tops.
- Barrel-leg jeans. This is still my favorite style, and this darker wash is both polished and comfortable.
- Straight leg jeans. These are SO comfortable, thanks to a good amount of stretch, and have a timeless, classic shape.
- Utility pants. These have a darted barrel leg (polarizing, I know…but I really love them). A casual option when I want a break from jeans.
- Pleated trousers. These are so good-looking and versatile (see how I styled them 3 ways here). Other colors available too.
Tops & sweaters
I’ve included 3 lightweight layering tops. Each can be worn alone or underneath sweaters/jackets.
- Striped shirt (similar). This one’s by Madewell from last year and no longer available, but you can find lots of styles and colors available this season.
- Cotton tee. This one’s very lightweight and relaxed but not oversizes, so layers beautifully.
- Breton stripe tee (similar). Again, lightweight and not too oversized for optimum layering potential.
I’m a big fan of merino wool for travel. It’s comfortable in a range of temperatures, breathable, washable and doesn’t pick up/hold odors. My two merino pullovers are a few years old; here are some similar styles:
UNIQLO | GAP | EILEEN FISHER | BODEN
I’m also bringing one lightweight cashmere pullover, this one from J.Crew.
Any piece that can be worn multiple ways is great for travel, which is why I now include more cardigans.
- Collared sweater jacket. This has been one of the MVP’s on my last two trips. It can be worn as a top, or open as a jacket.
- Wool cardigan (similar look) and alpaca blend cardigan. A great way to add color!
Outerwear
Based on the current forecasts, I probably won’t need to bring anything very warm. But the short leather jacket will be good for cool evenings out and I’ve often found a quilted down vest is perfect for navigating a range of temperatures. (Here’s a budget-friendly vest option.) I’m not planning to pack a raincoat at this point, but should that change I’ll throw in a lightweight shell.
As always, I’ll keep an eye on forecasts, and swap out or add a Wild Card piece right before leaving for the airport. And I’ll share outfits in “real time” along the way, as well as recapping how this wardrobe worked out once I’m back home.

Thank you for the gorgeous selection of clothing! I suspect the leather jacket is exactly what I have been hunting for. For reference, what size did you buy? How did you come across this shop?
Hi Kate, thanks! I bought size Small. First saw it in the ba&sh shop in Paris earlier this year. They were out of my size in this color, but managed to track it down online a few weeks later.
You know I always “need” more choice haha. I never travel light.
Greetje
PS love the pleated trousers.
Thank you so much for sharing this Susan! I would really appreciate some tips on what you wear on the flights. When we have gone to Europe from Vancouver, BC, I never seem to get it right, don’t want to be too casual however I’m petite (5’3.5’, 95 lbs), so always freezing, as though I need to be wrapped in down. Any suggestions wb appreciated.
Susan, does the travel capsule include the outfit you will be wearing on the plane? I am prepping for a 3-week trip to France, and trying to figure out how much to take. I wish I had the layers and colors as well-coordinated as you do!
Yes, it does. In my next post, I’ll share what I’m wearing for the flight.
Great post! I brought a quilted vest to Italy last spring and wore it frequently. In a future post, would you talk about what you wear while traveling on the plane? That is always a tough one for me. Thanks
Hi Allene, thanks! Yes, I’ll post my in-flight outfit soon.
Years ago, I read about a packing formula that’s worked successfully for me in a carry-on bag for many long trips. It’s 13 pieces and 3 shoes: 4 bottoms (or dress), 6 tops and 3 finishing pieces that all play well together. Add undergarments, a few scarves and outerwear and you’re off! I don’t know if you use a specific formula but I’ve noticed that most of your packing posts are pretty similar in the mix of tops and layering pieces to this formula though I was a bit surprised that you haven’t included a blazer this time. Happy travels!
Hi Shaza, sounds like you have a good formula that works for you. I’m still deciding on a Wild Card piece, and it may indeed be a blazer.
Hi Susan,
I find a quilted vest very useful and always plays well with others. You mention tendinitis.
Mine is ankle and heel area. Any meds or tips to help ease the pain/ discomfort ? It is such a nuisance, esp in the absence of a blatant injury. How long does it last …..Ugh !
Hi Nancy, mine’s on the outside upper foot and just below the ankle. I’m not sure how long it usually lasts as it just flared up (think it’s a result of a slight sprain a few weeks ago). I’ve been taking Advil and icing/elevating a few times a day. I do find wearing a firmer shoe really helps.
Hi Susan,
What size is your Betty Cardigan? Thanks for the helpful packing tips and enjoy your travels abroad.
Hi Carol, I take size Small in the Betty Cardigan.
Are you planning on taking a second handbag, or just the one you show in the outerwear photo?
I’m just taking the one, will be looking at a few new brands in Paris.
Tomorrow, hubby and I leave for a 2 week trip to South Korea. Usually, weather is mild (average high of 75) and some rain. So, that was our plan – until a couple of days ago when we got a better read on the weather – highs in upper 80’s! and very humid.
So, I’m pulling out summer-weight clothes that had been packed away. Switching in a couple of sleeveless items and out came the crew sweaters. Adding a 2nd pair of sandals. At one point, my planned wardrobe looked similar to yours (in terms of # and category of items), but I’ve decided to go with more items to provide more options for variables in weather.
Your travel posts with tips and reviews have been invaluable – I purchased the Lo and Sons Aoyama purse and Paravel luggage (larger size). Very happy with both.
Hi Kathryn, I’ve always wanted to visit South Korea. Adding more clothes sounds like a wise move, especially for heat and humidity.
Your clothing choices look perfect! Have an amazing time! September and October are definitely my favorite times to travel.
Thanks so much, Teresa!
Love the capsule, what size do you have in the Sezane Betty Cardigan? how thick is it?
Thanks, Elizabeth! I wear size Small in the Betty. I’d say it’s a medium-weight fabric.
Do you use packing/decompression cubes? If so, do you have any tips to offer?
Have a wonderful trip, Susan.
I am in the British Isles right now.
Your choices are great! We have had cool not cold temps with occasional rain.
Susan,
I may have missed this, but what size is your Ruti vest?
Thanks,
Linda
Hi Linda, it’s size Small.
I have found your travel wardrobes very helpful. Wish my brother had read your blog before our 28 day European holiday last year. He turned up at the airport with 3 carry on bags and his suitcase weighing 28kgs (61lbs) By the end of the trip he had added another suitcase and was so laden down with bags that Customs (at Melbourne airport) stopped him, searched his bags and confiscated his three tins of foie gras (from Paris) and a huge package of spices from the Old City of Jerusalem – ps a stern warning. My sister and I still laugh about it. Have a great trip to Paris and London.
Your travel capsule is inspirational. I was surprised that no boots were included. Still too warm I guess. We are headed to the south of France and then Paris in October. Thank you for the suggestions. I was going to try to do it all in a carry on but am having second thoughts. Would love to include a blazer and boots! I’m not sure if I’ll pack scarves…. may shop for some there.
Thanks, Elle. I debated about the boots, but as there isn’t a lot of rain in the forecast, I decided to leave them at home this time.
