Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobes: Cool & Warm Color Palettes for Effortless Packing

I love traveling in the fall. The air is crisp, the crowds are lighter, and the golden autumn light makes every photo more beautiful. But transitional seasons can be tricky to pack for when the weather can shift from chilly to warm, or wet to sunny in a single day. With a few smart strategies, you can be ready for anything without overpacking. Today I’m sharing two fall travel capsule wardrobes, one in a cool color palette and one in a warm palette, plus a few add-ons to keep you stylish and comfortable wherever your adventures take you.

Why a Travel Capsule Wardrobe Makes Packing Easier

Before we dive into the capsules, let’s talk about why a travel capsule wardrobe is such a game changer.

A coordinated capsule like these below can help you pack lighter and smarter, and eliminate those “nothing to wear” days. With lightweight pieces that can be worn in multiple combinations, you can easily put together travel outfits that accommodate the climate and activities, while providing variety.

Think of these capsules as your starter kit. You can always pack more (or less) as your destination, trip length, and activities dictate. With the pieces like the ones shown below, you can create outfits from very casual to Smart Casual (which is usually as dressed up as you’ll need to be).

Cool Color Palette: Navy & Burgundy Fall Travel Capsule

This capsule starts with navy as the anchor and layers in burgundy accents for rich, autumnal contrast. Mix stripes with solids, or pair the skirt with sneakers for sightseeing by day and loafers for dinner at night.

Warm Color Palette: Camel & Chocolate Fall Travel Capsule

This warm palette builds on camel and chocolate tones with pops of rust, olive, and teal. These earthy hues create a cozy fall vibe and mix beautifully for both casual and Smart Casual looks.

I always include a pair of jeans. They’re what I wear most at home and are appropriate for nearly any venue. Choose a style with stretch and some ease, and avoid very wide cuts that skim the ground; they’ll pick up moisture and dirt and can feel heavy after a day of sightseeing.

Essential Packing Tips for Any Season

The Basics

Top packing tip: start with shoes! The right shoes set the tone for the rest of your capsule and keep you comfortable all day. Be sure your footwear is comfortable, supportive, and appropriate for your planned activities.

Unless you have a formal event on the agenda, leave the heels at home. I usually travel with 2 or 3 pairs of footwear (depending on destination and weather) that can dress up or down. Sneakers are worn everywhere these days, even in the most stylish cities, so yes, you can absolutely bring them!

Layer up! When selecting pieces for your travel wardrobe (no matter the season), think: lightweight layers. They’ll take up less space in your luggage, and can be piled on or removed as needed to stay comfortable. Look for breathable fabrics (hand-washable a plus!).

It’s OK to repeat outfits. Though a capsule like either of these will give you plenty of combinations to play with, there’s no need to feel like you have to come up with something different every day. Scarves and other accessories can also do a lot of heavy lifting to change up a look. (But leave the precious jewelry at home.)

Outerwear & Bags

Add-ons. I’ve shown lightweight, packable raincoats with both capsules, but if you need more warmth, I highly recommend the “Wanderweight” down coat from Lands’ End. I’ve traveled with one for years during cooler seasons, and have always been glad I packed it. It’s water-resistant, too, and available in several colors in Misses, Petite, Tall, and Plus sizes. When just a little extra warmth is needed, a down vest like this one from Uniqlo can be a perfect top or mid-layer.

I prefer crossbody bags for travel, finding them more comfortable and secure. Your own needs and travel style will dictate what type of bag works best for you; I’ve shared some of my (travel-tested) top picks here.

  1. Do you ever look in the mirror and wonder, “Am I really a spring with this white hair?” I sure do. Just seems like the cool colors look so striking with white hair. Need some encouragement. Lol

    1. Hi Barb, I think my grey hair suits my Spring palette quite well. The color system we use is based on skin tone, and our skin tone doesn’t shift from warm to cool (though we may have less contrast with natural hair). Wearing our best colors near the face will actually be in harmony with grey, silver, or white hair. If you’re a Spring or Autumn who has let natural greys come through, you want to avoid those purple “toning” shampoos which can make the hair color too cool.

  2. I need a cool capsule travel wardrobe, but navy and burgundy is my least favorite color combination. With a blazer it just looks very stodgy. I would love to see one with teal, indigo, gray, lavender, purple, pink, colors that are pretty.

    1. Of course you can always use colors you prefer. I put these capsules together as examples, based on relatively neutral colors that are widely available.

  3. New England trip starts momentarily. Chilly temps (for me, 60s/40s). Think I did 4 bottoms and six tops. Kept in a skirt just in case. Long blanket type sweater coat. Glad it seems like I am on the right track. Thank you.

  4. Always love your capsules. This is a great one for a casual work trip coming up. I have and love the Black UK scarf (recommend to everyone, and winters, they have leopards that suit us!) That EF Ruby color looks divine for my coloring. Thanks for doing a cool toned capsule!

  5. I have bookmarked many of your travel capsule posts and packing tips and the tip I appreciate the most is to choose footwear first! I’ll be cruising Scandinavia next June for two weeks, where it could be 55 or 80 so I’ll be packing for every eventuality. I have two Uniqlo ultralight jackets but will definitely consider buying a vest as well.

  6. Excited to see this capsule for winters but was disappointed when I clicked on the skirt and saw it wasn’t navy or mid-length but black and ankle grazing. Otherwise a perfect grouping for those of us who like wear cool or bright winter colors. Thank you for always including the options. [and if you have a midi navy skirt in mind….. or a true red jacket…]

      1. Thank you! Looks perfect…use your system for packing as does my husband [translating it to male standards] when we travel. It makes a difference even when I’m on a trip where I’m seeing the same people over a period of time.

  7. Hi Susan,
Long time subscriber here. I remember your posts about wearing black back in your corporate days. Although I’m retired, my travel wardrobe is still so dark. We are about to go to Europe for a month, and everything I’ve assembled is either black or navy. While wanting to pack very light, avoid light colors that wouldn’t allow me to wear items multiple days, stick with no-wrinkle travel-friendly fabrics (merino, synthetics), I have created another boring capsule. Hoping a scarf will help lift my outfits.
    Thanks for your inspiration.

  8. Hi Susan,
Thanks for another newsletter packed with great tips.
Our next trip in May is 2 weeks on a Danube cruise, with several days beforehand in Budapest and afterwards in Prague.
I will need fairly nice clothes for the cruise and more practical for the cities. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s, I believe.
I would appreciate any tips you can share.
