Versailles & the Sun King

We’ve been watching the Netflix series, “Versailles.” It’s a dramatized series about Louis XIV, and the many intrigues of his court at Versailles. (Yes, the costumes are gorgeous too.)

Most of my knowledge of French history dates from Louis XVI forward, so I’ve decided to do some reading to fill in the gaps.

Cover of Love and Louis XIV by Antonia Fraser

I decided to start with this one, Love and Louis XIV, The Women in the Life of the Sun King by Antonia Fraser. The women in Louis’ court (and bed) were not just background players; many wielded considerable power. I’m looking forward to diving in this weekend.

We visited Versailles on our very first trip to Paris in 2007, but only had a few hours to spend (it was a group excursion). It was pouring rain during most of our visit, so I didn’t get to explore as much of the grounds as I would have liked. I’d love to go back again and be able to explore more on our own.

And Jan/Feb issue of My French Country Home Magazine has a fabulous article on Versailles, with loads of photos and tips for visiting!

Some very welcome personal news…

We’ve finally been given the green light to see Jeune Homme in person! (We haven’t been able to see him except on Zoom since last July.) We’ll be bringing him here for a weekend visit, and he’ll get to meet Gigi for the first time!

  1. Oh my gosh wonderful news about your son. That will be so exciting for all of you. Thank you Susan for another excellent post. I appreciate your style.

  2. All this isolation has been very hard on all of us. Enjoy your weekend reunion! PS: love the Margot sweater.

  3. Wonderful news about your son! Sitting here refreshing my browser trying to get my husband scheduled for a vaccine now that CVS has finally started offering them here in my part of PA. (I’m still not eligible myself, but we’re getting there.) Love the Lo & Sons Pearl (in Sand) I bought last year at your recommendation and just bought a second one in Silver during a recent sale, but it’s got some defects (what appear to be rust stains around the zipper) and is not returnable, so caveat emptor if you go that route. I haven’t tried contacting them yet, but I will follow up with them when I get some free time. Isn’t it wonderful that spring is just around the corner!

      1. I agree about contacting customer service at Lo and Sons. I, too, have purchased three Pearl bags on Susan’s recommendation. One had an issue with the strap. When I contacted customer service, they were more than happy to send a replacement. It never hurts to try!

        1. I did contact them, and they were wonderful! Offered to replace my silver bag with one that is full price, but I decided just to keep this one as they don’t have any more in silver and none of the other colors really has that “evening” feel. I considered the Graphite (and they actually suggested that as an alternative), but with the brass hardware, and the darker color, it really doesn’t serve the same purpose. Even with the stain, it’s a beautiful bag, and I doubt anyone but me will ever notice the flaw. 🙂

  4. Was the separation harder on you or your son? Our daughter moved back home shortly before the pandemic after a few group home years. I can’t imagine how miserable she would have been if not for that lucky coincidence. I hope your son is happier in his home.

    1. Thanks, Deb. I’m glad your situation worked out well for your family. I think our son was probably much happier in his group home that he would have been here. He has his housemates there, and the staff arranges lots of in-house activities like karaoke night, arts & crafts, etc. With just the two of us at home, it’s much more challenging to keep him entertained over a long period. And they have a nurse on staff so his health is constantly monitored, which gave us considerable peace of mind.

  5. Susan, Lady Antonia Fraser’s book is also available on Audible. The narration is excellent, and I found it easier to listen to than to read with such a lengthy text. Also, her book on Marie Antoinette is equally intriguing and enlightening. I found this an excellent way to broaden my knowledge of history and be entertained at the same time.

    Have a lovely family reunion.

    Best

  6. Susan, so happy your son will visit this weekend. May you all enjoy an easy transition & a happy reunion! Thank you for your time to share Netflix, reading, sale & color choices. You always hit the perfect note. As a winter, I’m grateful for your time to scout our intense color palette. Here’s to a terrific weekend in all ways.

  7. I love all the choices but I especially love the red suede jacket. I’m glad that your son will get to visit this week end. I appreciate you for taking the time to still do your media for us. I would love those bronze shoes. Metallic shoes are so versatile. I have a new pair of silver snakeskin sandals I can’t wait to wear.

  8. An excellent book with incredible documentation focussing on Marie Antoinette & the politics leading to the French Revolution-
Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution by Caroline Weber
Love the colours you have been posting lately. I’m a winter, wear black well, but since the start of Covid, I’ve lost the desire to wear black.

  9. So happy for you that you’ll soon be able to see your son. I want that sweater in the raspberry shade but it’s sold out Thank for the Netflix recommendation.

  10. Good news about your son. I have been to Versailles a couple of times. Marie Antoinette’s little play farm is my favorite. You really do need to go back because one visit isn’t nearly enough to see everything. (My friends like to laugh at my Versailles McDonalds pictures–also Starbucks–across the street from the train station.) While you are reading back in history, the 14th century and the plague is fascinating stuff. I can’t help but see parallels to our situation now.

  11. For the first time in months, I feel compelled to comment – about your wonderful, joyful news on Jeune Homme’s upcoming visit. So happy for you and your husband.
