Festive, Not Fussy: Holiday Outfit Ideas in Chic Neutrals

Somehow the holidays seem to sneak up faster every year! So I like to plan a few “Festive, not Fussy” outfits ahead of time, easy looks I can pull together without much thought once the invitations start rolling in. Most of our gatherings are on the casual side, but I still enjoy adding a few festive touches. While holiday style often means color and sparkle, neutrals can feel just as special, and they mix right back into everyday outfits afterward. To give you some ideas, I’ve put together a couple of “Festive Casual” looks, one in warm neutrals and one in cool.

How to Make Casual Outfits Feel More Festive

Before I get to the outfit ideas, I wanted to share a few tricks I use to add a little festive flair to my everyday wardrobe. With the right mix of texture, shine, and accessories, even your most casual neutrals can feel ready for the holidays.

Unless you’re attending multiple formal events this season, you probably don’t need a closet full of “party clothes.” Instead, focus on sprinkling your everyday wardrobe with a few pieces that can dress up or down; it makes pulling together stylish, comfortable holiday outfits so much easier.

  • Textures like leather, faux leather, coated denim, silk, tweed, bouclé, velvet, suede, faux fur, or brushed cashmere instantly add a touch of luxe. Look for these fabrics in shapes and styles you already love to wear, so they’ll blend seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe.
  • Embellished details (like trims, studs, embroidery, sequins, or crystals) can make even the simplest pieces feel special. Just keep the sparkle subtle enough that you can still wear them with more casual looks.
  • And don’t forget your accessories! A little jewelry goes a long way. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s cocktail ring or that vintage brooch tucked away in your jewelry box…what better time to show it off?
  • Finally, never underestimate the power of a bright lip to instantly lift your look (and your mood). 💄

Style Tips: Reworking Your Festive Pieces After the Holidays

Once the celebrations wind down, don’t pack those festive pieces away just yet! Many of them can blend seamlessly into your everyday wardrobe. Try pairing a velvet jacket with jeans and loafers, or layer a shimmery blouse under a casual cardigan. Accessories that sparkle can dress up simple outfits year-round, so keep them in rotation. The best “festive” pieces are the ones that earn their keep long after the holidays are over.

  1. I love this approach! Metallics make great neutrals that you can truly wear year round or combine for that holiday sparkle. Our lives have gotten more casual so it can be hard to add festive touches to otherwise casual outfits. I would wear a gray, black and silver outfit with a red or fuchsia lip as my winter pop of color! In the summer I’d wear silver flats with white jeans and royal blue.

  2. I have a small dressy capsule I can mix with the rest of my wardrobe. Gold metallic knit turtleneck, going dressy with better knit pants and white jacket. Casual, I’d mix with dark jeans and leopard print booties.
One favorite piece, a haori (short kimono) in a fabulous print with white shirt and black pants … I’m wearing that today to a friend’s 100th birthday party.
I’m going to work on mixing my dressy tops with jeans and vice-versa.

  3. Always happy to see what you’ve put together Susan! I got a couple of EF’s satin shirts last year and will wear those this year too if the need arises! As an aside: I wore the Ruti barrel leg jeans the other night for a dinner get together–they are SO comfortable! I think they’d be great for travel.

  4. I have a few outstanding pieces I can dress up or down. So I am good for the holidays although there are very few invitations rolling in through our letterbox. Small family.

  5. Loved & already purchased the sweater in the cool outfit. Thank you so much for searching thru all that you do to always find a gem. This floral sweater will easily find a happy home in my wardrobe.

  6. Two lovely ensembles and great advice! The camel, cream and gold is delightful, Susan. We are in the opposite season here in the southern hemisphere but your ideas are still applicable especially metallic or embellished fabric or sandal/shoe and jewellery plus a great lip colour to elevate a special occasion outfit.
I am hoping that you give us some suggestions from your recent travels for hotels and restaurants in Paris and London soon 🙂

  7. Hi, Susan, I think the holidays seem to come faster b/c retailers are advertising Christmas earlier. My local WE had its decorations up before Halloween. We walked in the other day, and my husband said, ‘Merry Christmas’ to the staff person who kind of did a double-take. I thought they needed their colors done, lol; everything seemed muted, even sludgy.
