From Paris With Style: A Faux Fur Jacket and Eyewear Refresh
I always return home from Paris brimming with fresh style inspiration, both from what people are wearing on the streets and the ever-creative shop window displays. I’m always looking for ideas I can adapt for my own climate and lifestyle, and that still feel true to my personal style. And yes, sometimes that inspiration comes home with me in the form of a purchase or two. 😉
Paris Style Inspiration: Effortless Texture and Subtle Details
While Parisian style still favors neutral palettes and classic silhouettes, it’s become noticeably more casual and relaxed over the last decade, though never without intention. What really stands out to me is how Parisians add personality through subtle details and texture, creating that effortless, layered look so many of us admire.

Bringing a Faux Fur Jacket Into Everyday Outfits
On this last trip, one piece that really captured that Parisian mix of polish and personality was a faux fur jacket I spotted in a Gerard Darel boutique. It’s the kind of item that instantly adds texture and dimension to even the simplest outfit, whether layered over jeans and a sweater or dressed up for an evening out. A faux fur (or faux shearling) jacket is such an easy way to bring that Paris-inspired fall style home: it feels elevated but still relaxed, cozy but not bulky.
When I add something new to my wardrobe, I always test how it works with pieces I already own. This jacket has blended seamlessly into my everyday rotation. Here are a couple of ways I’ve styled it, from casual days to a more polished look for dinners or evenings out.

I started wearing this faux fur jacket right away after returning to London! It was the perfect weight for cooler days, and added a stylish touch to my casual outfits.

Here I’ve styled the jacket for a Smart Casual evening or holiday look, with a silk blouse and coated denim trousers.
I love it when I can style a new piece multiple ways with items already in my wardrobe!

Here’s a closeup to show the texture of the jacket. The curly faux fur is really soft to the touch!
Update Your Look With Fresh Eyewear
Another easy way to refresh your look each season? Eyewear. A new frame shape or finish can completely change your appearance, no drastic wardrobe overhaul required. I took the opportunity while in Paris to update my glasses, and it’s amazing how much difference a fresh pair can make.
One of my favorite places to shop for eyewear in Paris is Jimmy Fairly. (They now have shops in London too.) Their well-made eyewear is stylish and reasonably priced.
These oversized frames are a big change for me, but I love them! They’re really comfortable too.

Love! So cute.
Love the new glasses they look great . As a fellow glasses wearer I think the right frames are so important from a style perspective. Really enjoy reading your style updates and taking inspiration from them. I live in northern England so I look for similar items on uk and European websites.
Fun post – especially like the new eyewear! Great on you.
Oh, the faux fur jackets are gorgeous! Two things that are inspiring my fall outfits this year are a pair of boots I bought from Bared Footwear (Rook), and a pair of trousers from You Must Create (Dead Beat). I’ve been wearing them non-stop.
I am curious about “reasonable” eyeware costs. My insurance covers just one pair of glasses a year. To some extent the frames are the least of my worries because I can control the cost. The prescription itself is expensive and takes two weeks to be completed. The vision folks also won’t take care of frames that they didn’t sell me.
Love the faux shearling jackets
Thanks, Maeve! These frames were about 130 euros. My optometrist will add prescription lenses and service my frames purchased elsewhere, though not all may do.
When you buy glasses frames in Paris do you have them put in your prescription there or bring them back to the US and have your prescription put in at home ?
Hi Leslie, I bring them home and have my local optometrist add the prescription lenses.
Those glasses are great and work so well with your favored colors, Susan.
Lately I’ve become interested in the interplay between our most flattering color palettes and our personalities. In your case, finding your new color scheme has seemed to uncover aspects of your personality – playfulness and a sense of adventure – that were concealed by the previous clothes you wore. And I’m sure many others have similar experiences. But what about those whose personalities seem at odds with their most flattering shades? For example, the bookish introvert who looks best in dramatic, unsaturated hues, or the outdoorsy amazon who shuns any form of “dainty” but looks best in pastels?
Would you be interested in playing with such scenarios and giving us some ideas for adapting our best color palettes to our personalities?
Also, I think a lot of us have found shades that flatter but are feeling in a color rut (raising my hand!) You are so adept at adding unexpected notes that inject vibrancy into your outfits (like that chartreuse sweater) but play well with the other shades you are wearing. Could you suggest more color “pops” for different palettes?
Thank you for all your inspiration!
Oops – I should have written “dramatic, saturated hues”
I love how you look in that gorgeous brown faux fur jacket! It really suits you. I wish that type of jacket worked where I live. I’m in the Seattle area, and generally if it is cool enough to wear a jacket, it’s also probably raining! Fluffy fabric like that and rain don’t mix well, alas. However, over the many years I’ve been following your blog, I’ve been inspired to try so many different lovely items you’ve featured. Thanks you for the inspiration!
I love the jacket and new eye wear on you. In the pictures the jacket looks like a combination of boiled wool, boucle, but much softer and plush (you got texture).
I love the jacket. It looks so good and snuggly. Glad you mention who’s dog it was with you on the bench. I was wondering…
