Fifty Ways to Wear a Sweater

#1 – 3

Style Spy recently asked, “Do you have anything in your closet that isn’t a “wow” garment, but is still perfect in its own small way?” For me, that one thing is my Land’s End cashmere cardigan. Mine is heather grey, and is one of the most worn pieces in my closet. It’s soft, it layers well, and it dresses up or down. So I thought it might be fun over time to document all of the different times and ways I wear it.

#1: Casual with t-shirt, jeans, scarf and leather jacket. Wore this to work yesterday.
I can see that if this project is to continue, I’m going to need to invest in a tripod and learn to use the timer on my camera. It’s tough to get a flattering picture this way.

I also wore this sweater almost daily when we were in Paris last year, so:
#2: With scarf and Tour Eiffel.

#3: With raincoat, t-shirt, and flowers.

  1. I have a navy alpaca cardi that I made several years ago that I wore so much that I got sick of it and put it away (I’ll have to dig it out – I’d totally forgotten I had it). But yes, there are such garments – I have a black and cream herringbone Lauren jacket I nicked off the clearance rack at TJ Maxx(as usual, it had an incorrect size tag in it, which is why it had sat there, unloved) – I wear that with: Jeans, black pants and skirts, black dresses, etc. It has made its appearance at everything from school board meetings to funerals and always looks great. Worth every penny I paid for it.

  2. My tried-and-true, old reliable is a black cashmere v-neck pullover, and when I’ve worn it out, I’ll be looking for another. Dressy with the right skirt, easy with jeans

  3. My “go to” is also a black deep v-neck sweater with 3/4 sleeves (from J. Crew on sale probably 5 years ago). I never travel without it. I wear it over a scoop-neck black Petit Bateau T w/ 3/4 sleeves, over collared shirts with the tails exposed, over my pyjamas when it’s cold in the morning. It’s perfect with jeans, skirts, even dresses. Despite repeated shavings and washings it still looks great. One of those things where I should have bought multiples.

  4. The perfect cardi… how do people live without them? I’m also not a wearer of gray, but I do appreciate its brilliant versatility. Like chicamericaine, my must-have sweater is a black v-neck, long-sleeved and cashmere. I’m on my second and third one (a garment like this requires a backup, just in case). (Actually, I’m on my second and fourth ones, if you count the brand-new one I lost in the Houston airport on the way to Paris this November. In Paris with no black cashmere v-neck — I was like a lost puppy. It was awful.)

  5. Great sweater, looks great on you. I had [sniff … had] a lovely charcoal grey boiled wool jeans-style jacket that I could wear with everything. Nothing in my current closet has the same versatility. Gotta work on that.

  6. You wear it well. I love grey sweaters but I always look too faded in them. You look brilliant in grey. It is a must keep.

  7. Another black cashmere vee wearer raises her hand.

Do you know Eric Bompard’s web site? Wonderful styles, great service, sales and specia
ls… in English or French. Yummmm. (They also provide very specific measurements for each style, something I wish J. Crew and Land’s End did.)

  8. Can’t live without:
    1. Jamovar fine wool shawls: more feminine and lively than a blazer, easier to travel with. Some are from India and some from the wonderful eBay seller, Heritage Trading.
    2. Black matte jersey pants, wide-ish legs (which I buy anywhere I can find them at nearly any price) and similar type in velvet for winter.
