Fisherman Sandals Are Back — and These Are Worth the Hunt

Fisherman sandals hit a sweet spot I keep coming back to — more coverage than a strappy sandal, but lighter than a shoe. I’ve been on the hunt to replace an older pair, and the timing couldn’t be better — they’re having a real moment right now. Sleeker, more refined, and just as versatile as ever for dress-up-dress-down styling.

A Breezy Summer Outfit Idea with Fisherman Sandals

Flat lay styling ideas for fisherman sandals featuring Cole Haan cognac leather fisherman sandals paired with a pink striped midi skirt, white eyelet blouse, wicker bamboo-handle bag, straw bucket hat, resin bangles, and rose gold sunglasses.

I tried on this pair from Cole Haan over the weekend and they ticked all the boxes! I love the refined toe shape and interesting weave pattern. They’re really comfortable — the leather straps aren’t stiff and the insole is nicely padded. This style runs true-to-size (go with your usual shoe size) and I think will work best for a narrow to medium foot.

The Fisherman Sandal Edit

Here are a few more sleek and chic options to consider. I prefer styles that cover the toes, so that’s what I’ve included here, but you can also find a multitude of open-toe styles.

On to a quick but worthwhile detour — because summer skin deserves as much attention as summer shoes.

  1. Great post, Susan. Thank you!
I’m hoping you and Brian may be doing lip colors by season as you did for the winter. The colors you both suggested for ‘winters’ worked out so well for me.

    1. Hi Nancy, they’re slightly different. Classic huaraches are usually more of a full slip-on shoe, made of thin woven leather straps, and originated (I believe) in Mexico. Fisherman sandals originated in the Mediterranean.

  2. I knew I liked you the very first time you modeled some fisherman sandals many years ago, Susan! I have always loved them and have spent way too much money on them since my college days, when I bought a dark brown suede pair at John Wanamaker in Philadelphia. I love that I can buckle them to get them tight enough on my narrow feet and that they look good both with bare feet or cute ankle socks. I have too many pairs to count at this point. My favorites are a gold pair from J. Crew and some bone color ones with a VERY pointy toe from Vagabond Shoemakers. (I also have both pairs in black. The J.Crew ones are patent and look a lot like the Bass ones you’re showing above.)

  3. I am still suffering from blisters in summer, especially on my heel. Bought a few more shoes and slippers this year and are keeping my fingers crossed.

  4. I’ve shopped at Cole-Hahn before so I see online ads. They had some great looking fishermen’s sandals recently, with a rubber sole. They looked very comfortable and I clicked through to see them, but they were from the men’s selection! I looked to see if they had a 7.5, which usually translates to my 9-9.5 women’s size, but they were out of stock. When they finally started showing me women’s fishermen’s they were all hard soled. Rats….

  5. I live in Florida and, while I’ve tried many times to grow my pixie into a Bob, I always fail because the heat and the humidity here is horrendous. I have fine, slightly wavy hair and I always wind up looking like a dandelion (the white, fuzzy kind). I am short and dandelion hair is not a pretty look on me. I currently wear my hair like yours in the photo with the brown jacket and white tee. Easy to take care of and wear. I love your posts – I always get so many great ideas!

Completely off topic. In a previous post you featured a no see, non-slip shoe liner, good for dressier style shoes, you recommended. I thought I”d flaged the message but can’t find it. Could you please let me know what you recommend.

    Thank you
