just bought myself a little present…

activity monitor

No, it’s not glamorous or particularly stylish, but I’m hoping it will put Being More Active on my brain’s front burner. Fitbit Flex Activity Monitor.

Several of my co-workers have been using this model and are very happy with it. Do you use an activity monitor or pedometer?

If it works out well, I can always up the style quotient with one of these:

  1. Fitness is pretty well integrated into my lifestyle already, and I don’t really need the motivation. I’m often curious about distance and wouldn’t mind something easy to wear all the time, but I’ve already got a TomTom Cardio to track my running distance, pace, route, etc and can’t really justify more “stuff.” I use the Health feature on my iPhone to track walking around town but of course I don’t carry it around inside! You’ll have fun seeing how much ground you cover!

    1. Frances, I’ve always been inspired and impressed by your running and other fitness activities. When I eventually retire, building more of these into my daily routine is a primary goal.

  2. I have the FitBit One, which clips to my shirt pocket. I went full in and set up a food plan, and log my daily calories. When I log in online, the software program lets me know if I am on track to maintain my daily calorie deficit. It was kind of a pain at first to log food, but once it is logged in, you don’t have to enter the nutrition data again. Just click on the item, like “gala apple, large”, tell it how much, and when, and it logs it into your daily record. I was a little disappointed to find out that the stair climb counter did not actually give an extra calorie burn over just plain walking, but other than that I have been very happy with the device. It has been a very positive motivational tool.

    1. Good to know. I’m already doing Weight Watchers, and their online plan allows linking a Fitbit for activity tracking, which was another impetus to get one.

  3. After my second Fitbit quit working, I gave up. The company is very good about replacing them, however. I have some friends who have had no trouble with theirs, and others who have needed several replacements. Just a heads-up. They are indeed excellent motivators.

  4. Love my fit bit…have the regular black one…conversation starter. Highly motivating. Have “fit bit friends” who are VERY active! It motivates ME to MOVE, because sloth-like is my nature! If I can get 6,000 steps by noon, I know it’s a GOOD day and I’ll get to my 10K by bed time!

If I don’t wear it for a couple of days (forgetfulness) my “fit bit friends” encourage me to get back on track! In fact, I haven’t had it on for a few days!! Thanks for the reminder!!

    1. ALSO – I had the small clip on one initially (gift) and I’d wear it on my bra and then forget about it and run it through the laundry 🙁 – hence the water-resistant bracelet…It’s something to talk about…TB version is cute enough, but IMHO, not worth the $ as a “fashion item”…I’d rather spend $ on shoes…

    2. one MORE thing…if you happen to be strolling around a big warehouse store…hold the cart with your fitbit-less hand…it calculates your arms moving, you won’t get credit holding the cart! Steps is steps!!!

  5. I have one and love it! It does motivate me to get a walk in at lunch or after work. I would love to friend you on Fitbit!

  6. I have a Fitbit One, which clips on a pocket (or a bra). I got that one because I didn’t want to wear the rubber bracelet every day . I probably don’t get as much good out of it as I should….I track my activity, but don’t make that extra effort to get the 10,000 steps if I’m having a slow day….

  7. I love my FitBit, which I received as a gift; I wear the rubber bracelet and order them by the lot on eBay. IMO the Burch one is a waste of accessory money- and I can wear the rubber type in the shower. (If I am getting so dressed up the bracelet looks weird, I just slip the bit into my pocket.)

Like Linda, the FitBit motivates me to do the steps, and though I was active before, now even nasty weather isn’t an excuse. Good for you!

  8. I’ve used a Jawbone Up bracelet for a couple of years now (currently using the Up 2 model). My husband started about a year ago. It has been a great motivator for both of us. Hope it works as well for you.

  9. I’m thinking of getting a Fitbit so thank you for the timely suggestion. I’m not a geek, but I am a fashionista. Question: do you have to buy a new Fitbit if you buy the Tory bracket or is it like a watch where you just can the bands and the watch is the same? I had a pedometer for years that I loved and lost 30lbs walking 10,000 steps a day so I know first hand they really can make a difference. If it works great and apparently your friends are raving about it, it will become part of your daily wardrobe.

  10. I have been using a Fitbit One for several years and I agree that it is very motivational! I joined a small group of other ladies from across the USA to compare progress and to encourage each other. The One records stairs as well as steps/miles….I was shocked at the number of stairs per day when we spent a week on the Amalfi Coast!! Hope you enjoy!!

  11. Karen….the Tory bracelet pictured is made for the Fitbit flex model. There is a tiny removable part of the flex that is inserted into the Tory bracelet.

  12. I love my fitbit purely because it showed me how badly I was sleeping and helped me take action to fix it. You don’t really realize how much better life can be with good sleep until you find out you’ve been sleeping poorly for a long time.

  13. Fitbit One is great! It has made me more conscious of whether I am getting enough exercise by tracking the number of steps and flights of stairs. For a while, I used it to track my calorie consumption by logging in the food I ate and I also used it to track my sleep quality.

  14. I love my Fitbit Charge. I’ve had it for six months and I am moving much more. It keeps me honest about my firmness level and H2O consumption!

  15. I love my AppleWatch. It does a great job of tracking workouts, calories, heart rate, general activity etc. and I love the way it looks. You can change the look of it by simply changing the watchband. Hermès has designed version that is gorgeous. There are tons of after market watchbands as well. I have had mine for about six months and it has really helped me to stay motivated. My level of fitness has significantly improved thanks to consistency. May you have great success in your quest to get fit!

  16. Wow this posting evoked some great responses. I tried a Garmin watch last year when I got back into jogging. Too much trouble. Have been thinking about a Fitbit–really just want to use something I don’t have to think much about. Mainly what I need is something that will vibrate when I’ve been sitting painting too long–a motivator to get up and move more during the day. I don’t want another Apple product and I don’t want to carry my iPhone around all the time so was thinking the Fitbit was just the ticket. Susan: did you get the option for two sizes or just the one size option on Amazon? Did you get insurance or no? (Sounds like they can ‘break’ for some folks…)

  17. I have a Fitbit Flex and definitely find it motivating. We do a fair bit of walking as we have a dog, however I also enjoy blogging (and reading other blogs!). When my husband takes our dog out for a long walk in the afternoon, I usually check how many steps I’ve done and, if I haven’t done enough, I’ll then go out to join them on their walk. I bought a Tory Burch siliicone bracelet (not as extravagant as the one you show!), which is smarter than the basic ones so ideal when wearing a dressy outfit. A warning: if you’re not careful you can catch the strap on something and it will fall off. That’s one reason why I bought the Tory Burch bracelet as it has a safety strap. Do let us know how you get one!

  18. I have a Fitbit Charge HR and I love it. We have challenges in the office and it motivates everyone to get up from their desk and move! Check out Amazon before you buy the Tory Burch band, they have a lot of different bands you can buy at a fraction of the Tory Burch price.

  19. I’ve had a Fitbit Flex for three years and love it. I link it to MyFitnessPal to keep my eating and exercise synced up. It really helps to motivate me to keep my eating in check. I think you’ll really like having it linked to Weight Watchers.

One poster mentioned the original bracelet popping off. I lost one that way so definitely recommend getting a bracelet with a better clasp.

    Happy stepping!

  20. i bought one of these for my oldest son for christmas! i hope he likes it. i had a jawbone at one point and loved measuring my steps each day. but i might have to break down and buy a fitbit for moi because that tory burch add on is pretty fab!
    xxoo beth

  21. I have a rose gold color Misfit Shine, set in a black & white damask pattern band by French Bull.
But I hope to upgrade to a smart watch/activity tracker like the Fossil Q Grant, Withings Activité, LG Urbane or Moto 360. I just love the look of a classic analog men’s watch and have been patiently waiting until style and function are both up to snuff.

  22. I have this version and agree with an earlier post that I buy various colored and patterned bracelets on eBay. Match them to my outfits,
Let us know if you want FitBit Friends and we can do challenges together!

  23. Yes, I love my Fitbit; I do find it really motivating, especially as i see my WW Fitpoints tick over. I have the Tory Burch double wrap band in Rose gold and love it; it is fantastic for outfits where I want something a little dressier than a black rubber band! Do be aware that it is A LOT chunkier than it appears in the photos; the chunkiness suits my style but I know some of my friends didn’t like that and returned them.
