Color Stories - Grey and Caramel

I’ve described Polyvore as “paper dolls for grownups” but it’s also a fun way to experiment with color and style combinations, without having to spend a dime.

I love the caramel hue of this J.Crew sweater, and even though I’m not ready to start shopping for cashmere yet, this color is on my radar. For this particular outfit, I’d also wear a dark grey tee and the sweater open, working our trusty Column of Color.

  1. Oh grey and caramel are my favourite shades (aside from white in summer) Open my wardrobe and it’s just one big grey caramel splodge, I can get on with the business of life when I’m not in anything too bright.

  3. I love camel and grey combo’s, but they often look frumpy on me. You’ve made them pop with great shoes and watch. Can’t wit to try that approach!

  4. First of all, thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog. Secondly, I love the combination of colors in this post and thanks for writing about Polyvore. I can’t wait to try it out. Finally, I am now following you. On your blog. 🙂

  5. While part of me wants to turn away, child-like, covering me ears and repeating “I’m not listening. I’m not listening” at the very mention of Autumn, another part is drawn to admire the combo. Once upon a time, not so very long ago, I couldn’t even consider caramel against my skin tone, but something’s changed since my mid-50s and if I get the right shade, it works. And it’s such a rich, sumptuous neutral, it’s worth hunting for. Plus putting it in cashmere? Yum, yum, yum! Fun polyvore makes it clear where your heart is!

  6. So inspiring; autumn is my favourite season and you have captured its richness so well. I have at least a half-dozen of those cardis, no need to convince me.

  7. What very pretty colors. I have a handpainted scarf with similar colors. I shall have to use your polyvore as an inspiration for creating an outfit this fall.

  8. Tabitha – Add some black and brown to that mix, and I’m with you. Navy, camel and olive count as “colors” don’t they?

Patti – thank you! Polyvore is a safer place to “shop” unless you click through to the retailer!

Belle – me too! There’s something about it that looks so rich.

  9. Deb – thanks! I often find that accessories are the key to making an outfit look fresh.

SheWhoAccessorizesWell – thank you. I sometimes build an ensemble around the colors in a scarf. Have fun!

Fashion and Frank – thanks so much! Have a great weekend yourself.

  10. Susan Tiner – thank you! I love those shoes too, but alas they’d sold out of my size before I discovered them.

Chicatanyage – thank you! Polyvore has improved their functionality considerably in recent months. I think you’ll find it addicting!

hostess – autumn colors are the ones that I gravitate toward and that look best on me. There’s nothing like cashmere for those cool evenings!

  11. making50fabulous – I’m so glad to have found your blog! Thanks for following, and have fun with Polyvore.

metscan – thank you! Autumn is “my” season. The colors, the styles truly speak to me.

ida – I hope you get to enjoy some summer weather before it’s over!

  12. UnEspritTordu – I’ll let you know about the pants, am going to try some this weekend. I find that a slim pant really only works for me under a longer top anyway. Isn’t polyvore a blast??

materfamilias – I’m so sorry if I’m being a harbinger of the end of summer. It’s just that the fall colors are the ones I like best, and this is the time of year I usually can find those pieces that become my (almost) year-round wardrobe staples. But here’s wishing you a few more weeks of lovely summer!

Duchesse – thank you. Oh yes, autumn is definitely my favorite.

Big Little Wolf – thanks! I never would have thought to combine these until a few years ago. Grey and rust is also a knockout combination.

  13. Love the picture of Paris and great outfit. Have just joined polyvore and am working out how to use it. It looks like fun.

  14. Leslie said just what came to my mind the sec. I saw this picture: Autumn.
Truly peaceful and delightful surely on – you!

  15. I have a cashmere sweater in a color a little darker, maybe tobacco would be the right word? And I love it, having kept it despite believing that cardigans now make me look like a sausage. BTW, is that PS1 bag not TOO DIE FOR?

  16. Yes definitely Autumn colours like grey and mustard more than camel…here in the UK so chilly have just popped my cashmere Winter socks on…think Summer has passed us by!!Ida

  17. I’m a huge Polyvore fan, and check it daily for great ideas/combinations. The pants shown here are clearly only meant to be worn by tall, thin and cellulite-free individuals. NOT for my age of 57!!! (I went to the J.Crew website to get a better look.) That being said, that particular style can easily be swapped out for a different, more flattering pair of slim pants, and the color combination is a beautiful one for autumn.

  18. Hello!

I like looking at other people’s Polyvore creations, but I’ve never played around with it.

I am currently on a self-imposed spending freeze until September 1st. After that, I want to be very selective in what I purchase for fall and plan out each acquisition. I have never ever done this before, so I am a bit confused as to how to approach it. Perhaps Polyvore can help me figure out where my gaps are in my wardrobe capsule.

The Vivienne Files blog has helped me get some fantastic ideas that I can use when selecting Polyvore outfits for myself (I am thrilled that she created one for me using my one and only Hermes scarf).

Okay, so I think I have blathered on quite enough for one evening.

I forgot to add that I love the caramel and grey combination. Even though grey is not really a terrific color on me, I wear it still.

    Have a fantastic weekend!

    Adrienne

  19. Adrienne – Vivienne File does some really great capsule wardrobe polyvores! You’ve probably picked the best time of year for a spending freeze, IMHO. Fall stuff is only starting to come in, and summer stuff is already pretty well picked over. I think you could use polyvore as a planning tool, just find items that are similar to what you have in color and style, and then see what new pieces might work with those. The thing about grey is that is works so well with almost any other color, so you can put the “good” colors near the face where it counts.

Style Crone – thanks, I’m in love with those shoes too. I keep hoping they’ll someday be available again!

  20. Love love love everything!! Totally my colors and style. I have the sandal version of those boots – perhaps need to check those out. I even have similar glasses (with a slightly wider side)!!

  21. I want anything camel, especially the camel hair wrap car coat I have been searching for, for a year now. With a big, big shawl collar.
