6. personal item carry-on  // 7. day bag for sightseeing

I’ve chosen to focus these last two gift guides toward rather specific demographic subsets, but as the old adage goes, “write what you know.” So above are some suggestions for travelers….

1. espresso machine // 2. acoustic speaker // 3. smoked salmon // 4. intriguing collectable

and what I’ll call “bon vivants,” a subset that may overlap somewhat with travelers. And we’ll throw in a Francophile or two. These are my people.

I’ve also updated my SHOP page with all of these gifty things as a one-stop handy reference. As I stumble across interesting things I may add them so do check back periodically.

  1. That French Coffee Press is pretty cool. It seems easy enough, based on the how to videos online. I’m going to have to visit my local Sur la Table to check them out in person. Mr. Coffee and I have grown apart, and a new morning ritual fling with a coffee press may be just the thing I’m looking for.

    1. Yeah, those electric coffee makers don’t actually heat the water enough for optimal brewing. What you’ll need to do though is grind the beans on a coarser grind that usually is used for drip makers. Check it out, and let me know how you like it.

      1. My grinder has only one setting, ON, so I guess I will just adjust the grind time to get a coarser grind. It looks like I am going to have to also get a kettle big enough to boil enough water to preheat the press AND brew my coffee. And yes, no matter how much vinegar and lemon juice I give to Mr. Coffee, he has still grown bitter and cold over the years. I’m just not that into him anymore. Time to move on!

  2. I immediately thought of you and your love of Paris when I saw this fun print. For the bon vivant, the Francophile (and fan of Woody Allen), a typographic map of Paris created with these quintessentially Allen-esque lines from his fabulous movie *Midnight in Paris* :

“You know, I sometimes think, how is anyone ever gonna come up with a book, or a painting, or a symphony, or a sculpture that can compete with a great city. You can’t. Because you look around and every street, every boulevard, is its own special art form and when you think that in the cold, violent, meaningless universe that Paris exists, these lights, I mean come on, there’s nothing happening on Jupiter or Neptune, but from way out in space you can see these lights, the cafés, people drinking and singing. For all we know, Paris is the hottest spot in the universe…”

Great inexpensive gift, handmade in the US (and I can vouch for the quality being excellent). There are 2 others, one for Manhattan (my fav) and one for Barcelona.
