Hey Boyfriend

boyfriend jacket, skinny jeans

This jacket is the only item of clothing I own with the word “boyfriend” in the name. I’ve tried boyfriend jeans, boyfriend sweaters, and several versions of boyfriend jackets but nothing worked until I tried this ruched sleeve version from MICHAEL Michael Kors. This little jacket is really brilliant: flattering, easy to style (and currently on sale). It’s available in Misses, Petites and Plus sizes. (You lucky Misses also have the option of Navy.)

Never underestimate the power of accessories. The clothes in this outfit are all simple, neutral and versatile pieces. A bit nondescript on their own, actually. The accessories are doing all the heavy lifting. 🙂

fuchsia suede pumps

Are you a member of the Sisterhood Of Bright Shoes? I’m its newest acolyte. It’s amazing the punch they add to a neutral outfit. These suede pumps from Diane bon Furstenberg have a nice low-ish heel and are quite comfortable. They’re also on sale now at Shopbop (plus an extra 20% off with code EXTRAOFF20 until midnight tonight) so run don’t walk!

Burberry, Saint Laurent

I’ve been drooling over this Saint Laurent Small “Sac de Jour” bag online for some time now. My contract with myself that if I want a new bag, I must send two off for consignment. Once I saw this bag in person, it was no contest. Not only is the design elegant and classic, but it’s an extremely functional tote for weekday use. I love that it’s not HUGE so I don’t feel as though I’m toting a piece of luggage. There’s a center zippered compartment, a zippered pocket and two open pockets.

Do you have favorite accessories that really dial up the style for your simple outfits?

  1. Lovely outfit and the bag plus shoes are beautiful. One thing I’ve learned when blogging is that a great bag and shoes make an outfit. I need less clothing and changing accessories makes the dressing interesting.

    blue hue wonderland

  2. I very much like that jacket, but while I can see the influence of men’s tailoring, personally I wouldn’t describe it as a boyfriend jacket.

You can carry a small laptop in that bag. I think my MacBook would fit into it.

When I was younger I had some bright shoes, but since I have orthopedic problems (due to arthritis) it is hard enough to find comfortable but not-ugly shoes. I certainly wouldn’t rule out another red pair.

  3. I haven’t been doing as much colourful shoe wearing in the last while, but I have a pair of aqua pumps and a pair of Fluevog pointy-toe kitten heels, close to 10 years old, the exact colour of the pumps you’re wearing — really useful exclamation point to put some punch in an otherwise neutral outfit. And I do wear my green boots at least once a week — surprising how that colour works.
Have to say, you’ve got everything right in this outfit, and good for you if you manage to add a great new bag while making room in your wardrobe by shifting two out on consignment. Impressive organization and resolve!

  4. I’ve decided to try to get out more in order to wear my fancy shoes, there will come a time when I just can’t walk in heels anymore so I need to go kick them up now.

  5. The jacket is perfect style wise and fit wise for your body type. I love coloured shoes. I have a beautiful pair of teal suede flats that I am combining with just about every neutral outfit that I own.

  6. That bag is soooooo chic. I saw a lot of women in Paris and Vienna carrying very plain, elegant bags like that–really stood out amidst the sea of more showy status bags (if that makes sense).

But you can’t keep getting rid of two bags to get one bag—doesn’t work mathematically, at least not for long! The point is a good one though.

BTW, I don’t know if you saw my comment on Duchesse’s post yesterday. All the Paris Sephoras have selections of Serge Lutens perfume. Since there’s a Sephora on every block…you don’t need to go out of your way to try a bunch. Sephora is generous with the samples too.

    1. Hi frugalscholar, thank you and yes I did see your comment about Serge Lutens and Sephora. They have several of the SL fragrances, but there are some limited editions that apparently are only available directly from SL, and some of those are the ones I want to try. Regarding the bags, I went through a “collecting” phase a few years ago. Now getting rid of two for acquiring one a) offsets the cost of a new bag, b) helps cull the herd, and c) really is a litmus test of how much I like/want a bag. If it’s not enough to get rid of two in my current collection, I don’t want it badly enough to buy.

  7. The brightest shoes I own are red. I wear them when I need a pick me up of more energy on a grey day.
Loving your new bag! I think it looks tres chic. It’s also a good idea not to carry a heavy huge bag as I think it contributes to some physical strain in god shoulder and back area. My physiotherapist chastised me for toting too much when I had that muscle issue.
At first I thought your new bag was a Birkin! It has very similar lines but at a much more modest price, yet still what I consider an investment piece. You’ll have it for years. Great choice.

  8. So digging the new Saint Laurent bag on you. And hooray for pink shoes! You look lovely. I need a hit of Lars. Where is hiding out these days? XO, Jill

  9. I really want to like brightly colored shoes, but it always looks off to me. I am probably the most boring dresser reading this blog, but I prefer the uninterrupted line a tonal shoe creates. Now that bag is right up my alley. 😉

  10. To me this is the iconic look of this decade. Skinny jeans, blazer, bag on elbow, bright pumps. And by the way, your shoes appear to be Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2014, Radiant Orchid!

I can’t wear this look to save my life – no heels, no skinnies, bags on my elbow hurt me. But I very much appreciate it on you.

  11. That bag! Those shoes! The jacket fits you perfectly. And, that neckline begs for one of your fab necklaces or brooches. You could go discreet with a small pendant, wear your jeweled J Crew, or (wait for it) your pearls.

Like Lisa, I cannot carry a leather bag like that, or wear heels- so you are my vicarious thrill, and you perform that role beautifully.

  12. Very smart outfit, nicely done. I have the same color shoes in suede kitten heel. I love them for the pop of color. My issue is tiring of lots of black. It seems to pull the color off my skin after a while if I wear it too often. I then need to go back to jewel tones to bring my skin back to life! The bag is one I would need to put on my Santa Baby wish list. I love a medium size bag.

  13. I am truly, madly, deeply with your entire outfit. Every element is perfect. I agree with Duchesse that you could carry off a necklace with it too, but I like its simplicity this way, allowing just the shoes to shout.

  14. Love love LOVE the new bag! And those shoes… I have a bag that same color & get compliments every time I carry it.

PS — I know you’re an Eileen Fisher fan. She’s on HauteLook today!

  15. What a great outfit on you and the shade of those pink shoes is perfect. I may even get that jacket, it’s summer here but it would be perfect for next winter — plus petite sizes available and a ruched sleeve! I’ll think this over today …

  16. What a wonderful outfit – Love the all dark colours versus the colour explosion of the shoes – That is an inspired choice !

  17. Great look, and gorgeous bag. I’d probably either cuff the jeans a bit higher to show more ankle, or have them hemmed (preferably) so the line isn’t broken before you hit those shoes.

    1. Kathy, I think you may be right. I’ll try a higher roll next time. I’ve been meaning to get one pair of my jeans hemmed to ankle length, perhaps this is the one.

  18. Love the shoes! They’re my favorite color. Thanks for visiting my blog today. I’m excited to learn we’re the same age. I hope I can learn some tips from you on looking good. Seems you’ve got it going!

  19. lovely bag…and you make me miss my hot pink patent reva flats! they weren’t comfortable, and i hated the logo emblem, but i did love the hot pink 😉

    1. Gretchen, you’ve given me an idea for a follow up post… 😉

I also want to say Thanks! to everyone for your kind comments. (For some reason, WordPress isn’t allowing me to comment on my own posts unless it’s as a reply to a comment. Anyone know what that’s about?)

  20. Bonjour “Une Femme.” Thank you for your visit chez Moi today, and for your support this year. My blog receives many visits from your readers, so a heartfelt “merci” for adding French Girl in Seattle to your blogroll.
Now– about this outfit: I am glad you and I agree about the power of accessories. You illustrate here what they can do for a neutral/subtle outfit. Love the shoes!
Happy New Year to you and yours. I will be looking forward to discovering more of your fashion pieces in 2014.
