Holiday Cheer, Part 1

Ah, there’s nothing like listening to Eartha Kitt purr her way through “Santa Baby” to lighten my mood.

N’oubliez pas, you still have a couple of days to enter to win a copy of The Night Before Christmas in Paris!

Annnddd…

Happy Chanukah!

Not our Menorah, but you know I SO would…

Tonight we light the first of the eight candles. We’re doing the family Chanukah gathering tomorrow night at Aunt & Uncle’s house. We’ve wisely decided to outsource the latkes to Junior’s Deli. Nobody could make them like my late and very-much-missed MIL, so a new family holiday tradition is born.

While our household is mildly Jewish, later this month I’ll give a nod to my pagan forebears with a bit of evergreen garland on the mantle (love that smell!), and to my mid-century upbringing with Vince Guaraldi’s “Charlie Brown Christmas,” on the playlist. I’m an Equal Opportunity Reveler.

  1. Revel away, dear Pseu! Eartha was my parent’s favourite chanteuse, and I was well out of my teens before I understood the double entendres in this song (among others). Of course my parents were not about to point them out.

  2. I also enjoy both Chanukah and Christmas, you see I am from Israel (so a bit more than ‘mildly Jewish’) but married me a very nice Catholic guy and being very happy for the last 29 years… I adopted Christmas completely making it all about the family being together and having good food! and of course also Chanukah; it should all be about love and happiness, right? so enjoy the latkes and a happy Chanukah!

  3. The Menorah just made me laugh!! We have celebrated evenings of Chanukah with Jewish friends in the past and I love it. It is so wonderful to share our traditions with each other. Have a fun evening!

  4. We used to do a mixed celebration of Christmas and Chanukah. For the past few years our holiday ritual has consisted of dinner and a movie on Christmas day. Not much decorating going on in my house this year.

  5. Happy Chanukah!! Love the menorah! With our blended family currently consisting of just me and my husband (all the kiddos away at school), I am wondering if we will even be lighting the menorah this year. My Jewish huband grew up with a Christmas tree, Santa Claus (and the Easter Bunny, something I really can’t figure out) and never lit a menorah so I began the tradition when we got married, more for the children than anything. My Jewish mother-in-law and sister-in-law are arriving for Christmas and expecting the full “tis the season”, so I must get moving on my decorating! Enjoy your family time!

  6. Love ‘Santa Baby’ and also the one that really puts me in a Holiday mood (even in sunny and hot Australia!) is ‘Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas’.
Happy Chanukah to you dear Une Femme!

  7. What a fabulous menorah! Very JAP. We don’t do religion of any kind anymore. Sometimes I miss it, but not too much.

My husband was just talking about how suggestive Santa Baby is – he plays keyboards in a band, and they’re working it up (no innuendo intended) for their holiday gigs. Their singer is very naughty, so I’m sure she’ll give it the full Eartha!

  8. Outsourcing the latkes as well. Whole Foods as they’re gluten free. But making the rest, brisket, etc. We’re having our extended family and friends Hanukkah party next Sunday. I’ll listen to Eartha, when my husband wakes up. Have a very Happy Hanukkah Susan.
