I just love it when this happens…Cristina of the blog Who Moved My Birkin has turned her passion for gorgeous hosiery into a business: PeekBrooklyn.com. Talk about following your bliss! Peek Brooklyn has a well curated selection of tights, stockings, leggings and hold-ups. She also stocks some European and specialty brands and offers something for all tastes.
Now that I’m wearing more dresses and skirts, I’m rediscovering the world of tights and other hosiery.
Cristina offered to send me a pair of these Jonathan Aston “Don’t Unravel Me” tights to try and review. I’ve been wanting to add some patterned tights to my style repertoire, and these were some that I probably wouldn’t have been brave enough to try on my own.
These tights are really well made and very comfortable. And the pattern goes all the way up, if you know what I mean. 😉 My first inclination was to wear these for a dressy look…
but Christina convinced me to try with a workday ensemble.
As these have a rather sexy vibe, for the office I’d keep the rest of the outfit simple and toned down. YMMV.
For those who prefer the basics, she also stocks solid Commando tights and leggings which feature an invisible waist and are reputed to be some of the most comfortable around.
If you love hosiery, do check out Peek Brooklyn and get inspired! ~

I hope you don’t mind me saying I don’t think this is a very flattering look for you. Maybe a plain tight would look better? I love your dress though 🙂
I am eager to scope out this new store, as patterned tights are one of my passions (I wrote about it just last night : >) I like your look – very sophisticated but with a twist of individuality. Well done, and I can understand that le monsieur appreciates!
With legs as shapely and perfectly proportioned as yours, you can wear the heck out of patterned tights. The flower ones are sexy, the paisley fun and I’ll be you could rock stripes, too.
I love the tights, although I think the all-black outfit with them is a bit boring. Would love to see you mix them up with a funkier outfit that has some color. If you’re going to go for it, go for it. 🙂 (And for what it’s worth, my husband loves patterned tights. I don’t wear them, but he always points them out on other women. Maybe I need to go shopping now!)
What fun! You’re a good sport to try these out for us. I occasionally wear patterned tights, but tend to prefer ones with a lower contrast — these are dramatic, but would tend to chop up my shorter legs a bit too much. That said, my husband, like yours, always approves anything that shows off or draws attention to my legs . . .nice to have a good fan at home. And I love, love, love! your new dress. It’s wonderful on you.
For the office, yes, they’re not appropriate. But, if it’s a casual day, wear them with ankle boots and funky scarves. You’ll earn instant respect and admiration of the 20s crowd.
Thanks for sharing Peek Brooklyn with us–I’m going with the fishnets.
The tights are fun, though I prefer the smaller patterns. Love the Eileen Fisher black dress. It was sold out in my size before I made the decision to purchase; glad you were able to snag one.
While I don’t care for the pair you’re wearing, the floral motif is quite pretty. You also can’t go wrong with classic point d’esprit. I used to wear patterned tights in the Seventies. One pair was rose pink with a dot pattern. A coworker told me my legs look chickenpoxed. Last time I wore those!
Perhaps it is time to step back from trying so hard. I generally love your posts, outfit photos, etc. but I think these tights have gone too far. Sorry.
no, no and NO. let the tweens, teens and 20 somethings have their patterned tights. there comes a time when even jeans are a no. no. but, back to the tights …. not a good look under any circumstance.
These tights are too bold for me. I like the flowered and paisley tights as they are a bit more demure. The dress is great on you. I was interested to see where the hem would fall on you. I have the other hemline and it is a bit longer (as you can see on the Eileen Fisher site).
These are all so much fun! (I used to wear pattern tights in my 30s, in Europe. You’re inspiring me to give them a shot again! I’m really digging those paisleys!)
Cool tights!! I am going to check out her site right now…I have looked for the polka dots, but I also like the other ones…You look so cool and I think they make the outfit creative and fun!!
Not a fan of patterned tights, and particularly don’t like the ones you have on. It’s not you, just find it a weird pattern. I think mini dresses on young girls with patterned tights can look OK, but I find them too busy, and not very elegant after a certain age.
Unfortunately my legs are not up to wearing patterned or coloured tights but I like the Commando ones, don’t think they sell them in the UK. Just bought a pair of Fogal tights, pricey but very nice.
I think all of those patterned tights are pretty! The pair you are wearing are definitely head-turning and quite a conversation starter. I was motivated by your post to buy some Hue patterned tights today while at Macys. They were on deep discount so I picked up a few pair. Mine are pretty subtle. I will give them a whirl and let you know what I think!
@kathy peck I think it really depends on the pattern and on the style. These are definitely a stretch for me, but often we don’t know if something will work for us until we try it.
@Alli Thanks. Being short, I have to be judicious about mixing too many different visual elements, but I think these could be fun with some solid, bright colors.
@Chicatanyage I definitely want to try those solid Commando’s, have heard very good things about them. It’s a shame they’re not available in the UK, but then you guys have Wolford… 🙂
@materfamilias Thank you! I think it’s fun every now and then to step outside of our style comfort zone, and these were definitely a step for me. Glad you like the dress, have some other styling ideas in mind that I’ll be trying out soon.
@SusanG Thank you! In my minds eye, I’m pairing these with my funky Fluevog Giulias, and maybe chunky sweater over that dress…glad you like Peek Brooklyn!
@laurieann I generally prefer the smaller patterns too, but it was fun to try something totally different. Have you looked at Nordstrom for the dress? Maybe they can find one for you.
@Anonymous I think any style is less a question of age and more dependent on one’s build and individual style. And if anyone ever tries to tell me I’m too old for jeans…well them’s fightin’ words! 😀
@Anonymous @ 8:43a Hmm, I’m not sure where you’re drawing the line between “trying too hard” and “trying something new.” These are the tights that were sent to me to review. They’re definitely a step out of my style comfort zone, but it was fun to try something new.
The tights seem to divide opinions ; ) But – I like them on you! Yes, the first ones are dramatic, which is great. I´d let the tights play the main role and remove the jewelry, or wear a black thingy around the neck instead. You really have the legs for these!
I think you have to have amazing legs to pull off this look; I wouldn’t go near it in a dress and heels. I do love patterned tights with boots and a certain length skirt or with shoes and trousers. Just a flash of something quirky and interesting satisfies my need for a new look. Otherwise I’d leave these to the skinny-minnies.
I don’t like patterns on sheer hose for dayware for any age group, the look screams evening to my eyes. For daywear I do wear Hue patterned tights in geometrics but they are actually opaque so the pattern is not obvious. That only works if you live in a cold climate.
I really admire your willingness to try new things. I think you look stunning in both photos, can’t imagine why some commenters don’t think the look is flattering. You look feminine and sex-ay.
Wow, what a terrific look! Please enroll me in Camp “This is awesome”! I didn’t care for the Eileen Fisher dress when you posted a photo of the dress on a model, but you make it look absolutely gorgeous, and the tights are terrific, too.
Don’t Be Silly One must never cross that fine, fine line where funky morphs into foolish. It’s one thing to look like a clown when one is 20 or even 30, quite another when one is not.
Today I’m speaking about colorful opaque tights. I’ve seen them on women of a certain age and on a select few they work, but it takes a certain confidence, not to mention great legs, to pull it off. They tend to look best with boots and of course even at 80 you can’t go wrong if a little color is winking out at the ankle, i.e. between pant cuff and shoe.
Here’s where all the fun stops. Forget about shiny opaque tights; maybe, maybe black, at night and remember the great legs rule. Shiny surfaces draw the eye to the reflecting material. Ask yourself: Do I really want people staring at my_________? Then you fill in the blank. This rule does not apply exclusively to shiny hose.
@Anonymous That was my initial reaction as well, but I’m given to understand that sheer tights with patterns are now within the realm of daywear. It’s a matter of taste though, and I can see how this would read as “evening” wear.
I hope you don’t mind me saying I don’t think this is a very flattering look for you. Maybe a plain tight would look better? I love your dress though 🙂
cheers

Kewt and presh! Love to wear patterned hoisery…they go so well with my tiaras!

more clown clothes

I like them better with the work ensemble — with so large a pattern, better to see more of it!
Glad to see the EF dress on, too. I always have a hard time imagining how her clothes will look on people with my body type.
I love your look.
For the office, yes, they’re not appropriate. But, if it’s a casual day, wear them with ankle boots and funky scarves. You’ll earn instant respect and admiration of the 20s crowd.
Thanks for sharing Peek Brooklyn with us–I’m going with the fishnets.
You look great in those tights! I’m glad you’re wearing more dresses as you have fabulous legs == as le monsieur appreciates.
Christine
Well, who cares what we might think if le monsieur approves:). BTW, I like patterned tights.
I agree that fashion should be fun.
I do like the floral patterned ones and those dots might be a great way to accentuate those great legs of yours!

(Funny there are two Susan Gs here.)

I love the patterned tights, and you’ve got the legs to wear them. I wouldn’t choose the first pair for myself, but those paisley ones – definitely!

Is your dress a petite?
These are all so much fun! (I used to wear pattern tights in my 30s, in Europe. You’re inspiring me to give them a shot again! I’m really digging those paisleys!)
Love, love, love these looks.
Cool tights!! I am going to check out her site right now…I have looked for the polka dots, but I also like the other ones…You look so cool and I think they make the outfit creative and fun!!
Who knew that tights could divide the masses? Too too hot for tights here now because it’s summer but I live in my Italian opaques in winter xxxx
Not a fan of patterned tights, and particularly don’t like the ones you have on. It’s not you, just find it a weird pattern. I think mini dresses on young girls with patterned tights can look OK, but I find them too busy, and not very elegant after a certain age.

Looks like you are having fun with tights! I have drawers full as I wear mostly skirts. My faves are the floral ones–and you look ravishing!
Love your blog and check it frequently but . . . . this look is so not for me. I’m sorry, I don’t like it at all . . . .
@Anonymous No worries, it’s definitely a *different* look for me. And I think it’s important to try new things.
@Patti @ NotDeadYet Style Thanks. I think you’ll find some really nice and unique choices there. She really has some fun options.
@Pam @ over50feeling40 Thank you! These are really “statement tights” but she carries a wide variety.
@Duchesse Thanks so much! I’m really eyeing that paisley pair for sure.
@Emma Thanks. I now realize my wardrobe is Tiara Deficient…
😉
@kathy peck I think it really depends on the pattern and on the style. These are definitely a stretch for me, but often we don’t know if something will work for us until we try it.
@Alli Thanks. Being short, I have to be judicious about mixing too many different visual elements, but I think these could be fun with some solid, bright colors.
@Anonymous How about standing behind your words by signing your name?
@Chicatanyage I definitely want to try those solid Commando’s, have heard very good things about them. It’s a shame they’re not available in the UK, but then you guys have Wolford… 🙂
@materfamilias Thank you! I think it’s fun every now and then to step outside of our style comfort zone, and these were definitely a step for me. Glad you like the dress, have some other styling ideas in mind that I’ll be trying out soon.
@Blume Thanks! I agree they look better with a shorter skirt. This dress fits so nicely. There’s volume, but not where you don’t want it.
@SusanG Thank you! In my minds eye, I’m pairing these with my funky Fluevog Giulias, and maybe chunky sweater over that dress…glad you like Peek Brooklyn!
@Anonymous Christine, thank you.
@LPC Thanks! 😉
@hostess of the humble bungalow The next ones I try will have a smaller, closer pattern, which I think might be easier to style/wear.
@laurieann I generally prefer the smaller patterns too, but it was fun to try something totally different. Have you looked at Nordstrom for the dress? Maybe they can find one for you.
@Susan G Point d’esprit are a great suggestion, can’t go wrong with a classic!
@Anonymous I think any style is less a question of age and more dependent on one’s build and individual style. And if anyone ever tries to tell me I’m too old for jeans…well them’s fightin’ words!

@Lorrie Thanks, and isn’t that paisley pair gorgeous?
@SewingLibrarian thanks! 😉
@Susan Yes, they are definitely bold! I’m glad the hem on the dress isn’t any longer than this, and yes it’s a petite.
@metscan Thank you! I think you’re right about skipping the jewelry. Or maybe just some earrings?
Wow!!! Time to wear some tights! Going right to Peek Brooklyn!
@BigLittleWolf Thanks so much! Peek Brooklyn carries a lot of European brand hosiery…and the paisley’s are my favorite too.
@Faux Fuchsia Indeed, who knew? The frock you wore to the Chanel party was smashing, heat or no.
@fashionoverfifty Thanks so much! I may add some florals and graphic patterns to the tights repertoire now.
@ccjach that’s OK. Chacun à son gout makes the world go round!
@adrienne Ooh, I look forward to seeing what you bought! Thank you.
@Debbi@SheAccessorizesWell Thanks! I may have to give those florals a try too…
@The Style Crone I’m sure you’ll find some that you love…

Love the floral and polka dot tights.
You rock the tights and your husband likes them so I say wear them proudly.
jUST GORGEOUS!!!! And a little bit sexy femme too.. well, a lot! And loving your photography post beforehand – great images..xxxx

The polka dot tights have captured my fancy :).

65 comments? On patterned tights???
Would never have imagined such response!
Personally I am not so crazy about the tights, but I love the shoes and dress–good choices!
You look fantastic! I am pleased you’re back with the pixie. If anyone can pull it off, you can.
Please share how you manage to combine glasses and jewelry and make it look elegant. I’m still working on it.
Gorgeous tights, and dress, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Don’t Be Silly

@Shelley I love the look of a little bit of pattern between hem and boots!
@Semi Expat Thanks so much!

@Susan Tiner You’re very kind, thank you! Those polka dots do look fun…
@Alexandra Thanks so much! That’s the funny thing about some of the EF pieces; I think they actually look better on curves.
@Mean Mama I know, color me surprised. As FF said, who knew that a pair of tights would divide the masses?
@dana Thanks so much! Wish I knew re: glasses and jewelry. Most of the time I’m just happy if I don’t clash.
@sacramento Thank you!
@Anonymous The trick, of course, is knowing when one has crossed that line. 😉
