Styling Satin Pants: Casual to Chic Looks

One of the keys to getting the most out of our wardrobes is the ability to style pieces in multiple ways. With some pieces, that can be a bit more challenging. One of my lovely readers asked for suggestions for styling these satin pants from Talbot’s. I love a styling challenge, so keep reading to see what I’ve come up with!

A few decades ago, there were clear delineations between casual wear, active wear, work wear, or special occasion wear. But those silos have mostly been demolished, which frees us up to wear more of our clothing in more ways. The key to styling any “party” piece is to just think of it as another top, skirt, or trousers.

So for reader G, here are some satin pants outfit ideas for holiday events or more casual wear.

How to style satin pants

Almost everything shown here is marked down for Cyber Monday!

How to style satin pants: two outfit ideas, one dressy, one casual. Satin pants outfits.
Left: SWEATER | EARRINGS | RING | BAG | SHOES
Middle: PANTS (ALSO IN NAVY HERE & PLUS/PLUS PETITE)
Right: CARDIGAN | EARRINGS | BAG | SNEAKERS

On the left-hand side, I’ve created a going-out or holiday party look. The brushed cashmere sweater adds print interest and a contrasting texture to the pants. (This one seems to be selling out quickly; here’s a nice cashmere v-neck option, also on sale.) You could also opt for a solid color. Metallic shoes add a festive touch (and can be a versatile option in your wardrobe).

But there’s no reason to relegate these pants to the back of the closet until the next party. Use texture and casual accessories to “dial down” the formality. Here I’ve styled with a cable-knit cardigan. You could also try with a fisherman sweater (budget-friendly option). I’d just advise not going too long or oversized. A colorful pair of sneakers adds a fun and whimsical touch.

These combos could also work with a satin slip skirt, or a longer pleated one. Or with wide leg velvet or silk pants.

I hope this was helpful! Do you have a piece in your wardrobe that you’re not sure how to style? Let me know…

  1. Hello Susan Nice post, thank you. I have a leopard print pleated skirt that I love but just don’t know how to style it. Tops look too long or too boxy and what sort of jacket looks right? I keep putting it back in my wardrobe because I can’t work out what to wear with it!

  2. Do you have an idea of what size you might take in the satin pants, Susan? I’m about the same size as you and I already have that leopard sweater. Thanks!

    1. I’m in the same boat as Kay, have had them for several years and nothing I try really works. I’d love to wear them New Year’s Eve, but need help!
