Labor Day Sale picks from a few of our favorite brands

My favorite kind of sales are those that include new season items. Here are a few of my picks to take you through fall in style…

Above, a casual transitional season wardrobe capsule in the Summer palette. (Bag not included in promotional discount.)

J.Crew, back with a fresh perspective

J.Crew has always been a reliable source for basic pieces. But I have to admit, I was also a fan of the quirky energy that Jenna Lyons brought to the brand during her tenure. Even though I didn’t buy the more “out there” pieces (sequins, feathers, tulle) the styling inspired me to mix things up a little. Their collections have felt a little…pedestrian in the last few seasons. But the new head of women’s design, Olympia Gayot has really brought some freshness and life back to the brand, without sacrificing wearability.

She’s wearing: TRENCH | SHIRT | PANTS | SANDALS

She’s wearing: VEST | SANDALS (Not sure about the pants, these are similar.)

My J.Crew picks

Anyhow, J.Crew has a promotion going…40% off your purchase and and extra 50% off sale styles with code LONGWKND. Here are a few more of my picks, some of which may have found their way into my cart… 😉

J.Crew v-neck cotton cashmere cardigan in ivory.

An oversized cardigan is one of those pieces I reach for on a daily basis once the weather cools down. This one’s a cotton-cashmere blend, so should be a good weight for fall. Sizes XX-Small to 3X.

J.Crew merino wool leopard print classic cardigan

I ordered this little merino wool cardigan the minute it came online, and it’s SO good! I’ve actually worn it out a couple of times on cooler evenings. It’s a great piece for travel too! If leopard isn’t your thing, it’s also offered in a zebra print and several solid colors. Sizes XX-Small to 3X.

J.Crew straight leg corduroy pants navy.

More polished than jeans, but just as easy to style, these straight leg corduroy pants are available in several colors. Sizes 23-37, Classic, Petite & Tall lengths.

J.Crew Teddy sherpa jacket dark brown.

I’ve had a teddy jacket on my wish list for a few years now, and was so excited to see that this one is offered in Petite as well as regular sizes. The sleeves are actually the right length! It’s also offered in an ivory color with taupe piping. Sizes XX-Small to XX-Large. In our mild climate, I’ll be able to wear this through winter.

J.Crew crepe keyhole top emerald green.

This little crepe top can be a great dress-up-dress-down option. It’s offered in XX-Small to 3X, in four colors. This emerald green is great for most Winters, and the Frosty Lavender should work most Summers.

👉 Another color note: the color “Kelly Green” is a true Winter emerald, not a Spring green.

J.Crew quilted lightweight lady jacket in ivory.

I bought this collarless quilted jacket last year, and wore it frequently during the fall & spring. It’s machine washable, sizes 00-16.

More Labor Day Sale picks

Jenni Kayne cotton fisherman sweater ink blue.

Jenni Kayne has 20% off sitewide with code LDW20. My favorite cotton fisherman sweater is included in the promotion. I’m eyeing the Dark Camel color, but this “Ink” color shown above looks like it could work for you Autumns. Some colors are available to size 3X.

Talbot's navy peacoat.

Talbot’s is a great size-inclusive source of classic styles, and they currently have 25% off new & full-price styles. It doesn’t get more classic than a good peacoat, and this one is a cotton blend, so perfect for transitional season wear (or if you’re allergic to wool). It’s offered in Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite sizes.

Talbot's Breton stripe pullover sweater with buttons.

This collared Breton stripe sweater (also a cotton blend) is available in Misses, Petite, Plus and Plus Petite sizes, in two colors.

Madewell knit corduroy blazer

And one more from Madewell, where new items are 30% off and sale items are an extra 40% off with code LONGWEEKEND. This knit corduroy blazer looks like a perfect marriage of slouchy and structured. It’s available in both Standard and Plus sizes, in 2 colors. This blue looks like it would work for you Summers….

  1. So nice to see you back. Glad you enjoyed your August respite. I’m looking forward to the discussion on style. Its been much on my mind. I was draped in the 90s and had an online color re-rate during the pandemic. I feel I have zeroed in on my best colors and want to avoid style mistakes. The Breton Collared Sweater from Talbots comes in a nice camel (English Toffee) that works for my Autumn palette. I bought it in petite and the fit is perfect. It is also very soft which is a plus for me. I expect to wear it a lot. I am not a fan on the oversized look at all.

  2. Superb recommendations of classic selections in a current rendition! I already have some of these items and will remix them with your ideas. I love those wine tassel shoes, but I struggle with ordering shoes online and I haven’t found my sweet spot with Talbots yet (also they charge postage both ways). When one lives in the hinterlands, brick and mortar stores are not accessible. I am on the hunt for comfortable, classy black slightly pointed loafers, perhaps plain or with a twist or silver metal embellishment. I especially thank you for Including comments about colors that would work for seasonal palettes! We leave for Portugal & Spain September 26 and I am debating wardrobe and shoe choices as this will be a transitional weather period. While we can have bigger bags, I do plan to use a carry-on, which means making choices :). Would you please remind me of the size you chose for the quilted JCrew jacket? I’ve been having great luck with JCrew this summer. Thank you!

  3. Hi Susan, thanks for your lovely early fall pics! I am especially loving your emphasis on flattering color palettes. I was looking at the J Crew corduroy pants in the blog. Can you tell me what size a 12 classic would be in the listed sizes? I don’t have experience with these sizes. I did not see any conversion chart. Are you still off to Italy soon?

    1. Hi Marguerite, I find J.Crew pants generally run true-to-size.”Classic” just corresponds to “Misses” as far as hem lengths go. Our trip to Italy was last year; we don’t have any big trips planned (yet) this fall.

  4. Thanks for the note on J.Crew’s “Kelly Green”. I’d been considering the wool cardigan in that shade, thinking it would work for my Spring coloring. I’m really loving bright greens these days, but struggle to find the right shade.

    1. Hi Sharon, yes I’ve received it. I ordered the Small Petite which is a good fit. The coat has an oversized look, but this size is a good fit through the shoulders & torso…just enough room to wear a sweater underneath.
