Because who doesn’t love some fun pajamas…

J.Crew lobster print knit cotton pajamas. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Last week’s heatwave was a reminder that my warm-weather pajamas could use a refresh. (I’m down to one pair, and they’re looking a bit sad.) So a-hunting I did go, and found some really fun pajama sets to share with you…all in lightweight and breathable fabrics.

Above: gotta love a lobster print…these are a soft cotton knit fabric. Sizes XX-Small to 3X. (I have a longer solid pair 👇 in this fabric, and it’s indeed “dreamy.”)

For those who prefer something with a longer leg, I have these and love them. (When the weather gets warmer, though, I find shorts are more comfortable. YMMV.)

I’m a big fan of Soma Cool Nights pajamas. They’re comfortable and hold up quite well. I love a good toile print too! TOP | SHORTS | SLEEP MASK. (This set might make a nice Mothers’ Day gift, just saying…😉)

Many of the Cool Nights pajama sets have multiple bottom options. Here’s the longer length in the toile print. There’s also a Sleep Shirt in this print if that’s more your style. Sizing in this line is XX-Small to XX-Large (equivalent to 20-22)

  1. These are all cute pj sets. The only problem is that the shorts all seem to run quite short to be worn by a mid 60s gal. I do love short sets but prefer the shorts a little longer. Have you tried this length of short Susan and do they run longer on you being that you’re petite? Any suggestions where to find pj sets or separates with more of a Bermuda short length?

    1. Hi Rose, Soma makes a 9″ bermuda length pajama short in the Cool Nights fabrication. It looks like they just have it in black and navy right now and the sizes are limited to XS and S. They’ve gotten some really good reviews so I hope this means they’ll bring that length back.

  2. Ralph Lauren has wonderful cotton pjs in longer leg lengths; very comfortable. Macy’s and Lord and Taylor carry them.

  3. The pj sets are all adorable. I’m surprised that you only featured short sets, and short shorts at that.

    1. When the weather’s warm, I find longer lengths uncomfortable. But I’ll round up some options with longer legs and add them.

  4. All so cute! Have to agree the short shorts maybe not what I would wear to bed as I usually wear..nothing! Keep a robe at end of bed and will put on a cotton shorty night gown if needed. If grandchildren are sleeping over, I know they always will migrate to our bed I wear long cotton pj bottoms and a T shirt or full on flannel in winter.! I never really understood wearing clothing to bed..tho I could see wearing these adorable sets for coffee on the patio or balcony!

  5. Sudara ( available on line , not in stores) has wonderful bottoms, Capri, full length or shorts plus robes! They do have some tops but I usually wear them with a T-shirt . The company is in the US but products are made in India to help support women.
The prints are beautiful , they wear and wash well and can be worn with T-shirts for running errands, travelling and touring.

  6. I am a big fan of all cotton knit pj’s. I find the best ones are from BedHead. Made in the US, quality fabric and they wash and dry beautifully. They have button up, pull over , shorts sets, capri sets and long sets. I have long ones for winter and short sets for summer. Spendy, yes, but I look for them on sale.
I think I might be the only woman who finds the rayon knits to be clammy. Soma’s Cool Nights give me hot flashes! I had a set from them and passed it on to my daughter.

    1. ” Spendy, yes, but I look for them on sale.”

Their sizing also runs small. I normally wear size 18, 38DD, but take a 3X in Bedhead. I find mine marked down at 6pm and occasionally, Zappos.

  7. I like a gown and love the Garnett Hill gowns.
The fabric is soft & continues to hold up with washings

  8. I prefer a short night gown to pajamas. I also love Soma Cool Nights collection and have several short nightgowns and sleep shirts. The pajama sets you’ve shown are cute!

  9. Garnet Hill has wonderful soft cotton pajamas in many different styles, and they last for several years. They also carry Eileen Fisher sleepwear.

  10. I like a cotton tank-top or camisole with Gap Breathe High Rise Bikini – all year round! And I live in New England! I am always too hot at night, especially at my age. I get cute pj sets with woven cotton pants and a matching tank for when we travel or have guests. Otherwise, less is definitely more!

  11. Since I run very warm at night, these days, I wear as little as possible. No sleeves or collars or waistbands! I like the Soma Cool Night chemises, in fact, I have my eye on a toile print in a lovely seaform color.

  12. What a fun post today, Susan. I immediately bought the Somas sleepshirt as the one I have been wearing could use a break!

  13. These are all adorable…on someone much younger than I. I hate anything around my waist when I’m trying to sleep. For years I have been a big fan of Eileen West modal gowns. Comfy and pretty.

      1. Doh! I should have refreshed before posting. Didn’t see the previous replies. FWIW, I prefer a large mesh fabric tank top for sleepwear. : )

  14. Very timely post since I’m looking online for new pajamas. The Soma Cool Night brand makes me too hot. I like longer pajamas and have found a brand online that I like. It offers all combinations of tops and pants. It’s all cotton and is called Needham Lane. I’ve been ordering from them for years and I am always happy with them.

  15. Whilst the pj’s were cute, I sleep naked, both winter and summer. The only time I wore a nightie in bed was during an overnight hospital stay. However, I do have dressing gowns and a tshirts which I wear if sitting up and reading in bed, otherwise my shoulders get cold.

  16. Thanks for this column, Susan. Very timely for me too. I have been looking at those Cool Nights by Soma but I also have hot flashes that wake me up. I was wondering about them because they are synthetic. Some of the comments here have helped me decide they are probably not for me, even though they are so cute!

  17. I’m more likely to wear a short knit nightgown (in cotton or other natural fibre) or t-shirt, along with something like joggers if it is very cold. When it is freezing also an open shirt.

While I love the storybook kitties, I’d never spend so much money on something to wear to bed.

  18. I just got two new pair for summer. I like the wide leg capri style. I also like tops that don’t button because I find the buttons uncomfortable.

  19. I just ordered the J Crew knit pair with cropped pants. The reviews contained many claims of comfort. I love pajamas and like to have several pair. These days of social distancing I find I am putting them on a little earlier in the evening. Great post! New jammies are a simple way to do something nice for yourself.

  20. I love PJs for lounging or if I take a early evening shower to wear on the patio or even okay to answer the door in. Long sleeve/long pant for winter, short sleeve/capri length for summer. I think the Soma brand wears really well and like the Nordstrom brand also. Then for sleeping I switch to a cool nights tank style night shirt. They are usually only available in the summer and the cute patterns sell out quickly.

  21. I prefer short-sleeve or sleeveless knee-length nightgowns – in fact, I just bought two new ones from Soma (the lemon print and the Côte d’Azur print). Since the bedroom window is always open, I also have a bed jacket that I wear while I’m (sitting up and) reading in bed.

  22. I am also one of those who gets too hot at night, but like something to cover my shoulders. I found 2 pair of Cuddle Duds pjs at Macy’s in February and really like them. I’m about ready to throw all my others out as that’s all I’ve worn since then! After reading this post, I think I’ll see what they have with shorts. I have the capri length.

  23. I like the freedom of movement in a chemise or sleep shirt. The most comfortable for me (night sweats also) is Eileen Wess model nightgowns. Comfortable, launder beautifully and stylish.

  24. I would love to see a roundup of summer robes. I’ve been searching for a few weeks and can’t find any that are lightweight, pretty (fun prints, perhaps?) and come in plus sizes. You’d think with Mother’s Day around the corner, there would be lots to choose from, but I’m only finding satiny robes, very short robes, and fuzzy cozy robes.

  25. I’m a big fan of cotton knit nightgowns–and have never worn pajamas. Your choices are very cute. I would love to see cotton knit nightgown choices as well.

  26. Pajamas are my favorite clothing category to shop for online. They don’t have to fit precisely and in fact are usually more comfortable when they are too large. I like to buy them as separates and mix them up. I also add in my old tees when they get too worn to wear out of the house.
