A new look with an older linen jacket

Susan B. wears a beige linen jacket, floral print top, brown knit pants and metallic flats.

One of the beauties of a cohesive wardrobe is that it’s easy to remix pieces to create new outfits. I borrowed the top half from one outfit and the bottom half from another to create this polished casual look. This linen jacket outfit is relaxed and comfortable, but feels dressed up enough for going out.

I purchased the jacket (pre-owned) from Eileen Fisher Renew about three years ago, and haven’t worn it much. I love the shape and fit, but it always felt too dull when paired with other neutrals. But the floral print top adds the pop of color I think it needs.

Here are a few more lightweight jackets in a similar vein:

This look rises to the level of what I call “Santa Monica dressy,” and I’ll be wearing this out for a nice dinner tonight….

Celebrating milestones…

In the Palais Royal gardens in Paris. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Today is une femme’s 15th blogaversary!!! I began blogging in 2007, hoping to start a conversation about style for those of us over 50. Thanks to all of you, I’m delighted to be part of an intelligent, thoughtful, supportive, and engaged community who keeps the conversation going!

I never imagined when I started writing all those years ago that the blog would evolve to what it is today, or that it would lead to a reinvention in my 60’s. I plan to keep going as long as I’m enjoying the process and feel that what I’m doing is helpful to you. And I’m looking forward to expanding into offering individualized styling services in a few weeks! More on that soon…

And tomorrow is our 27th wedding anniversary! We’re celebrating with dinner out tonight, as jeune homme will be with us for the weekend. We both have a lot more gray hair these days. 😆 (The dress was rented, have no idea who the designer was, but I was quite pleased with it.)

  1. Happy Anniversary and congratulations on your Blog Anniversary. Two wonderful accomplishments that certainly merits a lovely special dinner.

    1. Happy anniversary Susan. You looked beautiful and in love: the very best beauty treatment.
I have enjoyed your blog for almost half of your blogging career and look forward to the entertaining and sensible opinions. Your fashion transformation has been a revelation and I have incorporated more colour into my wardrobe as a result. It has had the effect of making me happier.
I live in Northern Ireland and can’t always access your recommendations, but try to find good substitutes for me.
Thank you and long may you continue.
      Vicki M.

  2. What a lovely picture of the two of you! I love throwback pictures. It’s always fun to see people as they were at a previous moment in time. Is your hair auburn in the picture and was that your natural color? If so, I can see why the warm color tones look good on you. Congratulations on your anniversaries!

  3. What wonderful reasons to celebrate! Congratulations on both your anniversaries snd may you enjoy many more. Thank you for what you do.

  4. I had no idea you’d been blogging that long! I spent many years as a full time Alzheimer’s caregiver, so I didn’t discover style blogs until a few years ago. Could you please tell me the easiest way to find your posts from the beginning on?

  5. Congrats on both anniversaries! You and your husband look gorgeous – like you could be models for a wedding magazine. 🙂 Most blogs don’t make it nearly this far. Thank you for always having great, interesting content all the time. Your hard work is much appreciated!

  6. You look so very happy in your beautiful wedding dress. Happy double anniversaries to you and wishing you a fantastic weekend. Enjoy.

  7. Congratulations on both anniversaries! I have been reading from almost the beginning – around that time my children were getting a little older and I had a bit more time to myself. I decided to delve into French Style, and your blog was one of the first I found. We moved to Europe (not France) that year and our next door neighbours were French, so I had a close-up view of a typical French woman, not even a Parisian, and she definitely embodied all that you’ve been talking about.

  8. You’ve looked lovely in all the photos I’ve seen of you. The navy coat/flowery scarf is very flattering. Congrats on managing 15 years of blogging and on your wedding anniversary. Long may it all last!

  9. Congratulations on both anniversaries. Your blog was recommended to me after a color and style session with a House of Colour consultant in Rhode Island. I am also a petite gamine but an Autumn not a Spring. I am looking forward to seeing your silver hair shine through and to seeing how you work with your warm colors as that progresses. I have found that having silver hair makes warm colors a little more challenging.

  10. Congratulations on your anniversary, and thank you for fifteen years of great style offered with joie and integrity.. Yours is the fashion blog I return to, again and again.

  11. Oh, I love wedding photos, even when I don’t know the people involved, LOL. Congratulations! And best wishes for your continued blogging success!

  12. Happy Blog-a-versary, Sue. Here’s to many more years of Une Femme d’un Certain Age. I first discovered blogs back in 2012, and you and Alyson Walsh/That’sNotMyAge, and Frances/Materfamilias Writes were my inspiration to start my own blog when I retired. It’s amazing isn’t it to be forging new pathways after we’ve retired from our “day job.”
P.S. And happy anniversary, of course. I had no idea you used to be a brunette.

  13. Congratulations times two Susan! I am a loyal fan and continue to enjoy your thoughts, your reimaginings and your fashion journey. Have a wonderful time with your family. Here’s to many more years!

  14. Congratulations and wishing you continued happiness and success in your marriage and blog! Such happy, sweet news! Thank you for sharing with us! I think you just made everyone’s day!

  15. I agree with you about a cohesive wardrobe. I think I have such a wardrobe as well because I always go for the same colours.
    Happy anniversaries.

  16. Happy anniversaries! I can’t remember when I didn’t read your blog so I think I’ve been reading from the beginning. Thank you for all you do. Your blog has been a great help in deciding what to wear, what to look for, different brands, etc. so that I make better decisions when shopping and fewer mistakes. Your wedding picture is lovely.

  17. Congratulations & happy, happy! Enjoy your weekend! Side note on the linen jacket, I would put a fun, and/or sparkly pin or grouping of pins. A way to jazz it up!

  18. Congratulations on your anniversaries, Susan! I look forward to reading your blog and love your suggestions. You looked beautiful on your wedding day and, in fact, in all of your photos, but I must admit, I miss your short hair. That style was so youthful and individualistic. Not a criticism at all – it is your hair after all:)

  19. Happy Anniversaries Susan! I found your blog in 2015 when looking how to pack better for my second trip to France and have been a faithful reader ever since. I’ve been inspired many times by your looks and ideas, so thank you for that. Congrats for your 27th anniversary too, we will celebrate our 29th this July,

  20. Adding my congratulations on the occasion of these two major milestones! I so appreciate all that you do to make your blog so unique. Mazel tov!

  21. Happy Anniversaries of two things that have helped you become who you are, and share that gift! Your wedding picture feels like a gift too, at least that’s how I take it. Thank you:)

  22. Congratulations on both anniversaries! I have been reading this blog , one of my favorites, for 13 years. I discovered it after I retired and had leisure time to spend on my computer. I dress mostly in jeans or linen pants so your style really resonates with me.

  23. Congratulations on your blog anniversary!

I love that you rented your wedding dress. It seems like such a waste to buy a dress that’s only worn for a few hours.

Our wedding was in the garden of my childhood home. We celebrated with a close circle of family and friends. It was about sharing our day and our vows, not the dress. Here we are nearly 27 years later.

  24. What a lovely wedding photo Susan! Congratulations on your 15th “blogaversary” and your 25th wedding anniversary. Both are significant milestones to be proud of. Enjoy your celebratory weekend with your Son.

  25. You make a very cute couple. I made my wedding dress because simple was the vogue in 1970. I haven’t been with you since the beginning, but close. It was your travel advice that brought me here. Keep going!

  26. Happy Blogiversary! 15 years is indeed a milestone!
And congrats on 27 years of wedded bliss! Have a fantastic weekend!

  27. Mazel tov on both milestones! I celebrated my own blog’s quinceañera in 2021—as you say, who could have imagined?

  28. Congratulations twice over! Thanks for sharing the wedding photo of the beautiful Mrs. B. and handsome Mr. B. Wishing you many more years of success, good health and peace.

  29. Gosh, can’t believe how quickly time flies. Congratulations on the blog, do so enjoy your posts, always find something I hadn’t thought of before, esp ‘shopping’ from my own wardrobe. Happy anniversary to you both, enjoy your celebratory meal & weekend avec le jeune homme x

  30. Your joie de vivre shines through the years, and is a regular pleasure to witness – congratulations on all your milestones, and may you have many more!

  31. Congrats on your two huge accomplishments ! And I love the linen jacket! What a great buy! I think I would add a little neck scarf, roll up the sleeves a little and maybe add a belt. It would shine!

  32. Happy anniversaries! Thank you for bringing your style, wit, humor, and fashion sense to your readers. As a 60+ woman who tries to look stylish without being frumpy, you have been an inspiration. Wishing you and your husband many more years of happiness and adventure together.

  33. Happy anniversaries! I’ve enjoyed your blog for many years and you e influenced my style and purchasing quite a bit. Thank you! Enjoy dinner!

  34. I think that charming linen jacket is the perfect canvas for a pin/brooch (never out of style in my book) or, even better, a silk flower brooch. I have a collection of all types, all colors. Love them on denim jackets too. I never tire of anything “flowery”.

  35. You have lots to celebrate Susan! I came to your blog a few years ago while looking for travel wardrobes, tips etc for Paris/France. I have a question for you – I remember you’ve had good luck buying comfortable walking shoes in Paris, what shops were you in? I made a spur of the moment decision to go to Paris in a week! I’m only doing carryon and have some good clothing pieces but am struggling with shoes. I may have to go wearing athletic shoes and looking to buy in Paris. Merci!!

    1. Hi Carol, for comfortable walking shoes try Mephisto…the prices are much better in Europe than here.

  36. Happy Anniversaries! Apparently you were always a smart cute woman! Renting a wedding dress is brilliant and frees up closet space from having that huge boxed wedding dress no one will ever see again! Now. Lantern pants. You are tiny. Do you think the pants would accentuate hips and look clownish? Also, I struggle with Eileen Fisher’s renew shop. Her clothes are slightly pricey, she urges you to give them back for a small amount, and then turns around and sells them at more than 1/2 price. Surely her company makes enough that those clothes could benefit women significantly in some way unless I am missing something. My thoughts for this lazy Sunday! (Can you give a longer slower scarf tutorial video?)
