Something for the guys

Banana Republic men's slim traveler pant navy. Men's travel pants.

I’ve had a few requests for men’s travel wardrobe ideas, and will be working on something in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I wanted to share a recent find: travel pants for men.

Le Monsieur is in the process of replacing some of his wardrobe basics that not longer fit or are outdated or worn out. He tried on these Slim Traveler Pants from Banana Republic and liked them so well he purchased in two colors. I’m hoping to convince him to replace at least one pair of the heavier jeans he usually packs with these when we next travel.

The fabric has some stretch for comfort. And it’s lighter and more refined than denim, so they can dress up to Smart Casual. If you have trouble getting your guy out of jeans, the 5-pocket style might make these more palatable.

Some colors are on sale. (They seem to run TTS. The fit isn’t as slim on him as on the model above, but there’s also the Tapered Traveler Pants if your guys prefer a more relaxed fit.)

  1. Very smart trousers Susan! It’s always so tough convincing my old man to buy something new but he looks so good when he makes the effort!
Can I ask a cheeky question? I always wonder why American guys always seem to wear baseball hats even indoors?
Congratulations by the way on your anniversaries, lovely wedding pic!

    1. A: Maybe their grandpas didn’t take them to task for it, like my dad did to my son. Grandpa’s word was the law.

    2. I’m not sure, but am glad my husband only occasionally wears one outdoors to keep the sun out of his eyes. I’m old enough to remember when it was considered bad manners for men to keep hats on indoors.

    3. Hi, Susan! I was so pleased to see your feature on these great BR slim traveler pants. We discovered them last month, and my husband loves them. He bought several pairs in 3 colors, plus the jeans version, basically replacing all of his old, tired, pre-pandemic pants. Ladies, if you’re trying to convince your husband, point out the soft, stretchy material and the deep pockets that easily fit a big iPhone, wallet, keys, etc. Now, why don’t they make them for women???

Susan, thanks for all your travel posts. I love your style! Don’t change a thing.

  2. My husband is addicted to Paige “jeans”. Has numerous colors. A nice change from denim like these BR pants you’ve highlighted. Of course, you can choose denim as well. Another nice travel pant would be the LULULEMON ABC pant. Great for golf too!

  3. When it comes to travel, my husband’s choice is from Eddie Bauer: Horizon Guide Chino Pants. Light weight for easy packing, material with some stretch for comfort, zipped back pockets, a “hidden” zipped pocket on the leg and nice enough for a smart casual look. He is tall with muscular thighs and calves, so slim leg pants aren’t for him. However, they do look nice on men with the legs for them!

  4. I can vouch for the slim Traveller pants from Banana Republic Sue. My Husband has had a grey pair for five years and loves them. He says they are extremely comfortable. He packs them for travel and also wears them at home for casual get togethers with friends. He does wear jeans and dress pants but finds the Traveller pants a good ‘middle of the road’ choice.

  5. Thank you for the pant suggestion for les hommes! As someone who spent forty professional years in bespoke only suits my husband has gone 100% slovenly old guy in retirement. Jeans from Costco with saggy bum, plaid Viyella shirts and fleece vests from Columbia!! Topped with a black ‘Castro’ cap! This is his quotidian uniform, he has multiples!! It doesn’t help that we have not travelled much or gone out to many restaurants or functions in two years since he retired. We have a few get togethers the end of April so I am going to get him to to look at the traveller tapered pants. He has developed a bit of ‘un gross bedon’ as well so the relaxed style might be better. Looking forward to your post for travelling guys.

  6. My husband also has a few of the BR Travelers’ pants and they fit him great. He always wore the chinos in Emerson cut, but they are hard to find. So we tried these, and I think they are really nice. They launder well and don’t need ironing. He wears them with blazers, shirts/sweaters to work. (he teachers at a college) I’m glad to see you showing some styles for men!

  7. How funny you should mention these! I just talked my husband into trying these last month and he loves them. Very flattering – he’s quite the silver fox since I got him out of dad jeans. Sometimes you can teach an old dog…

  8. @Ainsivalavie: You described my husband to a “T,” except he doesn’t wear the hat. He brings Costco jeans even to travel – all over the world! Thanks, Susan, for this suggestion. I’ve ordered a pair – fingers crossed.

  9. Hi Susan, I’m going to Paris next week with just two weeks to get ready (thanks to your blogs I can do a carryon travel wardrobe!) but am stuck on shoes. I might have to go with only one pair and shop for walking shoes in Paris. I remember you’ve had good luck with that, where did you shop! Merci!!
