A casual holiday outfit for Thanksgiving

Luxe casual Thanksgiving outfit. Susan B. wears a rib knit cashmere sweater, brown corduroy jeans, leopard print loafers and gold link jewelry. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I’ve always looked forward to Thanksgiving, and hosting gatherings with family and friends. I love the smell of a roasting turkey, breaking out the family silverware, and that time in between dinner and pie when we sit around the table and laugh, argue, and share what we’re thankful for.

But, times being what they are, it will just be the two of us this year, and we’ll be ordering in. Still, I plan to set the table with some of my favorite holiday decorations. To acknowledge what I’m thankful for. And to wear something a notch or two up from jeans and sneakers.

earrings | necklace (c/o) | sweater | rings (c/o) | pants | loafers (similar)

Easy and understated feels right for this holiday. I’ve leaned in to simple and neutral here, but opted for luxe textures with the cashmere rib sweater, corduroy pants, and brushed gold jewelry. And threw in a pinch of leopard print (that dash of style paprika).

But I also have a few more festive and colorful holiday outfit ideas in the pipeline, so stay tuned! 😉

  1. I’ve been trying to buy those cords from j. Crew but they seem to run short and the tall length is not back in stock yet. What length are you wearing? I love that color

  2. Talbots has a cream sweater that looks very very similar for much much less and of good quality. This year the sweaters there are lovely. I don’t usually shop Talbots but they got it right this year plus they have lots of my spring colors.
Thanksgiving will proceed as usual more or less here. We won’t be going to The French Laundry but we will gather at our city club and enjoy the time in the warm safe environment there. It will be different but an adventure of sorts.
I’ve done way too much shopping during this strange time and I don’t need one more thing. But if the world opens up again, My clothes are ready!! Still, I like looking!
    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  3. Oh, I hate Thanksgiving! It’s so much work for the host. My mother bought a tiny dining table (I think so she wouldn’t have to host). My MIL would always get a migraine from the work/stress of the day. Last year we went to a restaurant and she complained about the cost and the food.Let’s not even get into politics. I’m glad to have Covid as an excuse to stay home this year.

Your featured outfit is perfect! Love it all!

    1. I love your comment. It made me think of my grandmother and all the craziness at her house and kids running around as she sweated in the kitchen and then declared that by the time she sat down to eat she wasn’t hungry anymore!

    2. We don’t have Thanksgiving in Australia, but your comment made me think of Christmas and cooking a full English Xmas lunch, complete with plum pudding in the stinking heat. However, my mother did it (almost) cheerfully, until I took it over 20 years ago. Now there is only my hubby and I and we are off interstate for Xmas day and have booked lunch at a nice restaurant. I have had Thanksgiving in America and really enjoyed it, but I know where you are coming from.

  4. Love this outfit, simple but elegant. Those trousers are a gorgeous colour.

Our Thanksgiving has come and gone, (Canada) and this year was very different. We are a small family of 6, in three households, two in each. We were virtual again, just like Easter and as we usually host I had complete Thanksgiving dinners ordered from our favourite caterers and delivered to each of us. We all added our own desserts and salads. Personally I couldn’t bear to make the meals this year, it is one of my favourite holidays. Christmas will be the same except we are all going to be cooking our own meals this time and will “eat together” via WhatsApp yet again.

Please stay safe, and all the best to you and yours this Thanksgiving.

  5. It will be just myself & husband again this year. I used to cook all of the holiday meals at my mother’s house before she got ill & passed away in 2009; I can’t even count how many people would show up, however they would not show up here until at least 2PM when Dinner would be served. I’m going to ‘dress up’ as well; cashmere sweater, suede leggings & maybe my sweater shoes in nude. All choices are easy, comfortable and sort of dressy. We’re doing steak, twice baked potatoes and asparagus. Strawberry & chocolate cake (2 servings each) & vanilla ice cream! One of the things I’m thankful for is you Ms. Susan! I greatly enjoy your blog & have changed the way I look at fashion (it’s so much more fun now)!!

  6. Because of you, I am now wearing and buying colors I love. I got off the black and dark wagon. I love your outfit. I really don’t need another sweater because our winter season is so short but these pants are great. Bet they will be out if thst color by now.
I’ve bought Cornish hens, one a piece, instead of a turkey this year. My husband will smoke them. Ashamed to say I will buy the sides and pie but dressing I have to make. My husband loves it. 8X8 pan this year though.

  7. Those pants are awesome! I have them in grey, saddle and black. They fit everywhere, including the length. For reference, I am 5′-4″,112 lbs, and I wear regular size 2. I bought these pants in size 26. I live in Houston, TX, and the weight of these pants are perfect for our fall/winter.
As for Thanksgiving, we will stay “under the rocks”. It is no fun, but the risk is too high.
    Happy and safe Thanksgiving everyone!

  8. Casual elegance absolutely. It is just right for a quiet Thanksgiving celebration for two. Observing the Corona explosion in the US, it is so important that influencers are good role models for safe celebration. As a former chief editor of the Shape-Up Magazine in Norway, I enjoy your blog and style a lot. I live at the Canary Islands, writing health & beauty books and blogs. If anybody want to read some of it, visit evasundene.com. Have a wonderful, safe holiday all of you!

  9. You look great in the outfit, casual but polished. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving meal – even better you don’t have to cook it.
