Polished, Wearable Madewell Picks for Late Summer
Some brands seem to shine more in certain seasons than others, and I’ll occasionally lose track of them for a while. Madewell is one of those. While they often do basics well, their summer collections can skew a little too “Festival Girl” for my taste. But with pre-fall styles starting to arrive, I’m seeing more polished, wearable pieces that can transition your wardrobe beautifully from summer into fall.
I recently tried on these new “longline” straight jeans, and think they will appeal to those who are looking for a slim-not-skinny style. They’re available in two washes in Standard, Petite, and Tall sizes. I found they run small, so suggest sizing up. That striped sweater vest is a t-shirt alternative you can wear now and into fall; just layer it under jacket or over a blouse when the weather cools.
I’m intrigued by that cute bucket bag, but they hadn’t received it in the store yet. I like that it has a crossbody strap, and that there’s hardware to hold the drawstrings closed.

I’m wearing size Small in the cardigan, 28 Petite in the jeans.
I didn’t leave the store empty-handed though…this 100% cotton cardigan followed me home! It’s perfect for transitional season wear (or the cooler-than-normal weather we’ve been enjoying the last few days). And it’s a good weight to pack for early fall travel! It’s available in four colors. This “Fiery Orange” is good for Springs and most Autumns. And the Watermelon color looks good for Winters and Summers.
Here’s a look for those of you whose style leans a little more Bohemian. The blouse is available in several colors. If you prefer a lower heel, here’s another pair of sandals that could work with this look.
If you’re starting to think about what to wear as summer winds down, these kinds of versatile, polished pieces make the transition easier and more stylish. I’m always keeping an eye out for items that work across seasons and still feel current. Have you spotted any late-summer finds that you’re excited to wear into fall?

Hi Susan, I’ve noticed several of your recent posts—including this one—recommended Charlotte Pilbury’s Pillow Talk lipstick. I’m interested in trying it and may order it during the N sale. I have Autumn coloring with fair skin and don’t know which version of Pillow Talk to try. Wondering if you have used it?
Hi Marilyn, I have tried it, and like the formula. For an Autumn, I’d check out Stoned Rose, Yes Honey, Coral Kiss.
It’s going to continue to be blisteringly hot here where I live (Houston), so I’m not feeling transitional wear yet. Check back with me in October!
Fortunately, I have enough transitional clothes. I should really clear out the closets rather than buying new stuff.
But your cardi is beautiful.

A reviewer wrote that the cardi pilled quickly. Have you experienced this? I can see myself getting a lot of use from this sweater. Thanks!
Hi Maeve, I haven’t worn it enough to judge. But the texture is a bit nubby/bouclé to start with.
