makeup bag essentials

I may change out my lip color regularly, but here are the items that are always with me in my cosmetics bag:

Clarins UV Plus HP (SPF 40) – great barrier sunscreen that isn’t cakey. If I know I’ll be out in the sun in the afternoon, I’ll re-apply a bit of this.

Guerlain KissKiss Liplift – both a balm and a primer, it softens dry lips and makes lip color stay put longer.

Chanel “Les Beiges” powder – keeps the shiny bits under control, adds a little more SPF.

L’Occitaine Shea Butter Hand Cream – just the best. This little tube will last me for months.

What products are the “permanent fixtures” in your cosmetics bag?

  1. Laura Mercier Translucent powder compact
    Liptoxyl X3 lip treatment
    Chanel Nude lip liner
    MAC Syrup sheer lipstick
    Chanel Melodieuse lipstick
    MAC Pro white pencil
    Sevani Rose Hyaluronic Tonique Mist
Cerave cream (de-potted into small container)
    Guerlain Vetiver
    Blotter papers

  2. Aerin rose lip balm is always in my kit and then a lip stick or two. Right now its Trish McEvoy iced mocha lip stick, Clinique Chubby in Fuller Fig and Aerin lip gloss in City Rose, that’s a holdover from last winter. Current handcream in the bag is Molton Brown in Orange Bergamot but somtimes it Aveda Hand Relief, especially in winter. And of course a small pack of tissue, a tin of anise mints from France and Wet Ones handwipes.
I usually carry a Picotin from Hermes, which is on the smaller side. I use the organizer from Mai Tai’s picture book and these get tucked into a pocket of the organizer. When I chnage bag these few items get tucked in a pocket. I’ve been trying the past few months to make my bags lighter. The cosmetic case holds lipsticks that are in rotation. I keep it in the closet near the bags making it easier to swap lipstick shades when need be.

  3. Facinating seeing inside people’s handbags… Mine always has powder (currently Clinique), lip balm (currently Nivea raspberry flavour) and some more coloured lip stuff – usually lipstick for work and either lipstick or gloss for weekends.

  4. Bobbi Brown concealer and her cream eyeshadows. The shadows that are matte (no metallics) work really well on, well, let’s call them “experienced” eyes. Also Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer in a compact is very good for blog photos–for which I’ve become a complete ham!

  5. Bepanthene cream (best lip balm ever!) / Chanel lip liner nude / Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Boy (day) and Rouge Coco Mademoiselle (night) / Chanel Le Volume Mascara in Plum / Guerlain Terracotta 02 / La Roche-Posay Thermal Water (I live in Tenerife and the air is quite dry) / Noa by Cacharel (30ml)

  6. My make-up pouch essentials are …. A hair brush that folds into a mirrored handle that fits nicely into M-U bag. A small spray bottle of Eau de Cologne, refilled from my big one. L’oreal Perfection lipstick in a neutral colour and a small packet of tissues. This all goes into a very nice Vera Bradley pouch and is easily transferred from handbag to handbag.

    1. Hello – I wrote the above comment and the name should read Swan not Anne in order for you to visit me at swan-nowlivinginfrance. I look forward to your visit. Meanwhile you are on my blog reading list and is most enjoyed. Thank you, Anne errrrr Swan

  7. I’m late in coming to this post, but I always find it helpful to hear what people carry in their makeup bags. I usually carry a small detangler comb, Lancome lipstick (currently Designer Bloom-sheen), a lovely, gold, Estee Lauder mini-compact with powder for my shiny nose, Aveda lip saver or Banana Boat spf balm, and a couple of Qtips for quick eye liner repairs. If I’m going to a fancy event in the evening, I’ll add Lancome Le Stylo waterproof eyeliner pencil in cafe.

  8. First, I have switched out my cute little Herve Chapelier pouch for a clear, plastic one. Now I can actually see what’s there, but of course, it’s not half as stylish! I use Aquaphor on my lips, many times a day…so I have a very small plastic container w. top that I refill as needed. My newest lipstick is from Bare Escentials (love their entire line!). Another small, mini container with lemon hand cream. A small metal pill container (it looks like a capsule: from Container Store) for Tylenol and there is usually an Immodium left over from foreign travels! And, of course, some Kleenex all folded neatly.
So, I haven’t been here for ages and ages and glad I am back! I will start following you right now; trying to focus more on “age-appropriate” blogs and yours is wonderful.
    Thanks, Libby

  9. Lipstick, lipstick and more lipstick. Of course I must also include lipstick pencils. Clarins hand cream sample. Bobbie Brown lip salve. Bobbie Brown brightening powder and brush. Of course now I must go back and look at the colors.
