Easy outfit formula: jeans and a blazer

A versatile navy blazer is one of my wardrobe workhorses. Here I’ve styled a favorite navy blazer in a casual outfit with jeans, sweater & sneakers.

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom. All ideas and opinions are my own. None of the items shown were gifted.

A sporty casual look with navy blazer and jeans

I’m wearing size 6 in the jacket, XS in the sweater, 26 in the jeans (this style runs large).

In January, I often find myself leaning toward easy, minimal outfits. It’s a mental palate cleanse, and a way to reconnect with the power of simplicity. Paring back also gives me the opportunity to evaluate my basics and play with silhouettes without a lot of visual distraction.

A navy blazer can skew a bit preppy or corporate (depending on the blazer). The weathered wash of the jeans take the formality down a couple of notches. And I’ve taken the outfit in a more modern, relaxed-sporty direction with the half-zip sweater and sneakers.

I really like this little half-zip sweater! It’s soft, wool-free, and available in four colors and in Plus. (Summers, check out Pink Rapture. If it’s the color shown on the model, this is close to the Rose Madder in your palette. The Purple Villa could also work for you and some Winters. Autumns, check out Green Cilantro, a lighter version of your Spruce.)

Sublime sneakers

I’ve warmed up to sneakers over the past couple of years. There’s just something about a sleek, white sneaker… But my favorite styles are still those that I can slip on. Easy peasy. These are some of the most comfortable yet! The leather is really soft, and there’s good arch support. (According to a Nordstrom Sales Associate, these are a customer favorite.)

Here are a few more white sneaker styles with arch support:

Nordstrom is always my first stop, whether I’m looking for wardrobe basics, shoes, or accessories. They carry a wide range of brands and sizes. And I’ve been impressed lately with their in-house brands. Shipping and returns are free (and hassle-free!).

  1. Great outfit. Makes me miss Navy as there is nothing more classic than a good navy blazer. I love the sweater. I’m 5’3″ and the length looks good. I am wondering if I should size down? I’m usually a medium but this looks a bit oversized.

    1. Thanks, Kathie! Yes, the length of the sweater is good for petites. I find the fit relaxed, but not oversized. I’m usually an XS in relaxed fit sweaters, and a small in more fitted sweaters. Hope that helps!

  2. It is a great look. I would have thought you’d go for the lilac or pink sweater. Are those not your colours?
My blue preppy blazer is too tight to wear with a sweater but I like the look.
    The sneakers are fantastic.

    1. Thanks! I think the pink would have been too cool for me. Also, I don’t like to wear pink and blue or navy together.

  3. Hi Susan, I love your outfit. I’m looking for a similar blazer but would really prefer one in petite sizing. I’m looking for a one button fitted jacket. I purchased a black Generation Love blazer but, as usual, i have to have sleeves altered and the button placement is a bit off. Do you think in the future you could do a post on petite blazers? So many designers are including plus sizes which is great but petite sizes seem to be disappearing, for example, Eileen Fisher.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Lisa, thanks! And yes, it’s been quite frustrating that so many brands have been eliminating their Petite lines! I’ll work on something for a future post.

      1. Thank you so much. I don’t know why designers have forgotten us shorter gals. As we grow older we shrink! Even if you start out as 5’5″ chances are you’re going to lose some height and be relegated to the petite department. Talbots stocks a lot of petite sizes but that true preppy look isn’t for me. Not only are they cutting down on petite sizing but when they do offer them it’s online only. I’m talking to you Anthropologie and J Crew! I’m constantly going back and forth to stores with returns because I am not offered the option of trying clothes on. Very frrustrating.

  4. Great outfit…would the color(sweater) you’re wearing work for an Autumn as well….I liked the green too. I enjoy your blog….getting my colors done is on my bucket list. I was mis- diagnosed ( ha ha) many years as a winter and followed it….I know I’m autumn but would like to know the range etc.

  5. I’m struck by how many different shades of navy blue there are. My guess is, there’s a shade for everyone.

Curious about white sneakers. I know they are trendy and stylish, perhaps even classic. However, white is not in your color palette. Do you make exceptions for footwear? I’ve always tried to find shoes in my season to keep outfits coherent, but perhaps it doesn’t matter. Thoughts?

    1. Hi Annie, most of the time I do try to keep footwear within my Spring palette, but will occasionally make an exception, as with these sneakers.
