holiday party looks

If your life is anything like mine, most holiday parties aren’t big formal affairs; rather they take the form of gatherings after work, evenings in friends’ homes, or a department lunch at the Boss’ favorite Italian bistro. For these kinds of events, full-on Party Wear can be overkill, but you may still want to dress up a little and in a way that acknowledges the occasion is special. I like the idea of an accessory “party pack” (shoes, bag, jewelry) that can be added to a simple outfit to take a look from desk to drinks in four seconds flat.

And since shoes are an essential component, let’s rejoice, for Party Feet need not be painful feet. Fashion has re-discovered the flat, (and the low heel) and for the rest of us this translates to the best selection of styles in years. Look for materials like suede or patent leather, metallic finishes or embellishments that can read as dressy, but in simple styles that can be mixed in with the regular wardrobe after the holidays.

Nordstrom’s shoe selection is fabulous, and they’re always my first stop when looking for something specific. Not only do they offer a wide range of prices and brands, but they will almost always carry wide or narrow widths, and an extended range of sizes for the lines that make them. If you’re still hesitant about buying shoes online, Nordstrom offers free shipping and returns, so trying on at home is truly a risk-free proposition.

What’s your strategy for more low-key holiday party dressing?

  1. Gorgeous selections! I especially love the sparkly Rebecca Minkoff bag. 🙂

After hurting my knee a couple of weeks ago, I’ve had to moth-ball my heels in favor a flats. Fortunately, as you pointed out, there are some wonderful styles available. I have the pale pink version of the Halogen Olsen pointy toe flat from your second party set. The “pale pink” is essentially a nude shade and has been invaluable. Those and flat-heel black over-the-knee boots have been my staples lately!

  2. I think especially in LA, adding some jewelry, changing your shoes and bag are the three things that makes one restaurant or party ready – year round! Very nice choices and love the two palettes.

  3. Great selections! I especially like the leopard clutch and the Halogen shoes, although they might be a tad flat for me. I find i need just a bit of a heel or my back tends to get sore.
