Ode To The Ankle Boot

ankle boot styles from Nordstrom. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Oh Ankle Boots, How Do I Love Thee?

Ankle boots remain my preferred footwear for many reasons. If chosen well, they’re supportive and comfortable. They’re excellent for travel. They’re versatile, and can be worn with skirts/dresses, or just about any style of pants (cropped, slim, bootcut, skinny).

(Many thanks to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. All ideas and opinions are my own.)

Let Me Count The Ways…

  1. Classic. This style has been popular for years and no wonder. Comfortable, reasonably priced, and no superfluous design details.
  2. With A Twist. Some may argue that these aren’t actually booties, but they fill that same niche in one’s footwear wardrobe during warmer months. I really like the twisted design detail on these! Also available in black and navy.
  3. Mod. Sleek and sharp, these Chelsea boots can dress up or down. Don’t let that patent leather scare you; I’ve tried these on and they’re soft and comfortable.
  4. Rocker. If you’re rejoicing in the return of 70’s Glam style statements, these might appeal. Distinctive but reasonably priced.
  5. Fun. If you’re looking for a cute-but-comfortable option, or need a Narrow or Wide width…this is your boot! Bonus points for water resistance! Also available in Black and “Greige” (taupe) suede.
  6. Flirty. This style reminds me of something you’d see on a stylish Parisienne…simple but with an interesting detail. (In this case, subtly sexy corsetry lacing.) And it’s also weatherproof!

Nordstrom has an amazing selection of ankle boots, including many of my favorite brands: Paul Green, Aquatalia, Munro, and Sam Edelman. They offer a wide range of sizes, widths and colors. Shipping and returns are free, so finding the right size is a risk-free proposition.

Do you have a favorite style of ankle boot?

Sam Edelman “Petty,” how do I love thee?! And now DSW stocks some colors (sorry for that mention, Nordstrom, you know I love you too). I already own two pairs, so I sighed regretfully and walked away from the grey suede pair.

I remember when I first saw women wearing these (mostly like #5) in the mid-90s and thinking that they looked like my grandma’s rain galoshes over her dress shoes–not elegant. But they have shown amazing staying power and now I’m used to the silhouette with skirts (low boots have always been practical with pants). With pants, I particularly like the retro/mod style of #4, and the particular pair you show are exquisite.

I find the silhouette of #6 so flattering as it accents the ankle. I do have low styles like #1 but that higher line is so appealing! I don’t know how to do visual searches but if anyone knows of a less pricey #6 type boot, I would love to know!

I think that ankle boots became the new pump in the 90s. My feet get really hot in knee high boots so I have found that suede lace up ankle boots by Ecco are the best choice for work and casual dress. I have a pair in black and brown. The suede is soft enough that my feet don’t feel constricted.
