I’ve had to concede that our little Sony Cyber-shot camera is not quite up to the task at hand, snapping WIW shots for the blog, that is. It’s a nice little camera for outdoor snapshots or travel photos, but doesn’t seem to be able to walk and chew gum (timer + auto-focus) at the same time.

So, those of you who do your own style shots with a tripod and timer: do you have any recommendations for a camera?  I’m looking for something that will be simple to use, will auto focus, flash (or not) as needed, and produce a high quality digital image, but won’t set me back a month’s mortgage payment. What say you, O Wise Style Bloggers?

  1. I would never call myself a wise style blogger. Insufficient hubris. But my Panasonic Lumix point and shoot can focus and autotime a la meme temps. So perhaps that would be sufficient. And I know I left off the accents, but it’s late:).

  2. I’m a bit of a camera nerd — and I love my Canon PowerShot SX30. It’s a digital range-finder, not an SLR, but it has a lot of the features an SLR would give you. Good price point, too, around $375. (Its big brother, the SX40, has even more features, for about $50 more.)

It takes great pictures indoors and out, and because it’s fairly small and light, you’ll find that it’s not a challenge to travel with it.

I got mine from B&H Photo online, but if you’ve got a good camera store near you, they may have them, too.

  3. I’m not a style blogger, but I do take self-timer photos frequently. In August, I received a Kodak EasyShare C195. I believe it was around $80. I use a Gorillapod as my tripod, along with some clever props because the tripod only fits on the bottom, so portrait oriented photos take some creativity.

This camera has a few options for the self-timer, but I find the 2-picture option to be the best. The first picture is out of focus and the second one perfect.

I’m sure there are much better self-timer cameras out there, but for less than $100, this camera is adequate.

  4. Hello:
We are in no way equipped or qualified to advise about a camera, indeed, we feel that we have only just graduated ourselves beyond the Kodak ‘Brownie’, but we are sure that there are other bloggers out there who can offer wonderful advice given the excellent photography we see around the Blogosphere.

Gosh, we remember seeing MP the first time around. Nudge, nudge, know what we mean?!!!

  5. My very generous husband bought me a Sony Nex-5 for Christmas last year and I love it. It has DSLR picture quality without all the complications. The real SLR cameras were much too heavy and bulky for me to carry around. I have not graduated to a tripod yet but that is the next step. My best advice would be to find a very knowledgeable and helpful assistant in your local camera shop to guide you through the process. I wish Apple made cameras.

  6. Canon Powershot SD1400IS ~ best small, point and shoot camera I’ve ever had. I used to lug my big Nikon to Europe, but only took this one last time, and the photos were just as good. Great zoom too. Yes, I love cameras.

  7. That skit is hilarious!

I have Kathy’s camera but I still take bad photos because it seems to be impossible to keep my hand still.

So I guess that means I don’t have any advice :(.

  8. I develop WordPress sites for clients and I recently bought the Nikon COOLPIX P90. Great camera- easy to use and even shoots high def video. I am a camera novice and I use this well. 🙂

Love the blog! Thanks for writing.

  9. To be perfectly honest, I end up using the incredible camera in the iPhone for sooo many of my shots! I do use a Nikon D70 slr when I’m setting up shots; it’s easy to use and gives great photos. I think a very important aspect no matter the camera is in post-production…

See you in Provence in the spring:) thanks for visiting!

    bisous

  10. I use a Sony Alpha 350 for heavy duty work, but I always carry my Sony DSC-W300 everywhere I go. Its picture counter is on number 8,526. It is a 13.6 megapixel. It goes from point-shoot to complex control. I use the ISO mode -no flash high sensitivity – to record a lot of documents, especially important mailings, so it is my copy machine, my “better” memory. My next camera may be Sony’s Nex, just not sure which model. Best of all my $$$ lens from the Alpha can be mounted on it.
