Just-Landed Styles

Eileen Fisher linen drapey trench coat. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

It’s a weird time of year, fashion-wise. Yes, we’re officially just one day into Summer, but the collections labeled “pre-Fall” are already beginning to trickle in. Pre-Fall is actually my favorite clothing season, as I find the weights and styles most wearable for most of the year in our mild climate. But it’s also a short retail window, and tends to give way to heavier Fall pieces by September. So I approach these collections with a mostly Buy-Now-Wear-Later mentality, though some pieces may be light enough for all but our warmest days.

Glimpses Of Pre-Fall

I’ll admit, for the last several seasons I haven’t been that thrilled with most of the Eileen Fisher collections. They’ve been a bit boxy, boring and blah. But the July collection just hit the website, and there are a lot of pieces that caught my eye. Above, this drapey linen trench is along the lines of what I saw in Paris. Especially the color. It’s offered regular, Petites and Plus sizes! And because it’s linen, it may be one of the Buy-Now-Wear-Now options. (I’m also seriously eyeing those shoes, but they’re not on the website yet.)

Waxed organic cotton moto jacket from Eileen Fisher. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I was SO excited to see that she brought back this waxed cotton moto jacket! I bought it when it first came out 5 years ago, and have been looking to replace it.

Style blogger Susan B. wears an Eileen Fisher waxed cotton moto jacket, jeans and black boots. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Here’s I am back in 2013, being a Motorcycle Mama. 😂  (That’s le Monsieur’s moto.) The new version of the jacket is offered in Misses, Petites and Plus, and I like the darker hardware too.

Eileen Fisher stretch crepe pants with side detailing in olive green. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

And our favorite stretch crepe pants get some interesting side detailing. I like the olive color, still neutral but a nice change-up from black. As with the jackets, these are offered in Misses, Petites and Plus sizes.

French Kande stone necklace with vintage French medallion. Details at une femme d'un certain age.French Kande has also launched their Fall “Chatelet” collection, and it’s another fabulous one! There are several new medallions, and new stone mixes. I LOVE the colors in this “cafe au lait” stone mix!

French Kande black labradorite necklace with Bayonne medallion. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

For a short statement necklace, the combination of black Labradorite and gold is a dramatic choice. This Bayonne medallion is one of my favorites.

If you prefer your jewelry on the more delicate side, here’s a beautiful silver chain necklace with quartz beads and mini bee medallions.

Do you ever shop with a “Buy-Now-Wear-Later” mentality? Or do you wait until a season is in full swing?

  1. You look so chic in that shot….but you always look chic. That little black jacket is great. I have a pink, and 2 black leather jackets and love them, they are so fun, but the idea of a cotton one for here in Florida …..hummm,

    1. Thanks so much, Jill! I’m in Southern California and found I wore this one often. (We don’t have your humidity, but do have a pretty mild climate most of the year.)

  2. Love the orange coat in the first shot but also love those shoes! Can you give me some info about them? Thx 🙂

  3. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the orange coat but would like something in i.e. crepe that can be worn year round instead of linen (love the look but the wrinkling really bothers me)…any recommendations for a similar longish coat in the burnet orange or …my favorite wardrobe color…black? I bought a black longer R. Lauren coat/jacket on sale at Nordstroms but its not really “the one” …so will prob. be returned.

    1. I’m keeping an eye out for any workable iterations of a drapey trench, and will continue to post as I find good ones. Stretch crepe is such wonderful fabric, isn’t it?

    1. I ordered that one to try too. I know, black, but it looks like a great cut, and I find a bit of texture in the weave softens the black a bit.

      1. The paprika Vince culottes and pleated top was such a push for me. Still wondering if I should return it for the same outfit in white. At least I didn’t order the black!

        1. I’d say keep the paprika. It’s a nice color and you’ll wear it into fall. Pairing with lighter, soft neutrals like an ivory top will tone it down a bit.

        2. I had a Paprika “utility dress” from Vince scroll past me on Facebook. I like the idea of a heavy twill dress. i’m in the orange is the new black school of thought. I think I would get more wear out of a dress than a coat/topper.

  4. You look so chic in that photo, love your whole outfit. I have something similar to the cotton moto jacket. It goes with almost anything. I live all the necklaces too.

Buy now/wear later, I will wear what I have bought at the beginning of the season. Or before, I live in Chicago, we have crazy weather.

    1. Thanks so much, Nancy! It’s frustrating sometimes that it can be hard to find what’s seasonally appropriate when we really need it.

  5. No wonder you want another moto jacket — you look so cool in that picture! If I had the élan to pull it off, I’d wear it myself. Malhereusement, my “style” is Femme Ordinaire. I’ll confess — I follow your blog because I love your “voice”, your French references, and your travels. And I enjoy reading about style even if I have none of my own. (You did finally persuade me to get a pair of black EF washable crepe pants, however. That’s something.)

    1. Hi Lyn, thanks so much! I suspect you may not give yourself enough credit. Perhaps your style is minimalist, or “simple chic?”

    1. It does seem like kind of an outdated retail model. I think most of us would prefer to shop on an “as-needed” basis.

      1. It does make you wonder if the amount of items ending up on sale would be considerably less on that basis. Nowadays there is always a sale on, whereas I seem to remember only sale shopping twice a year in my youth. It was akin to a military expedition for my mother back then when she would advance on all the top London department stores with me bringing up the rear guard. Those were the days of true bargains until ‘bought in for the sale specials’ changed the idea of seasonal sales.

  6. Love, love. love you in that Moto Jacket! The new version looks tempting, but oh those crepe pants! How do they run? Eileen Fisher tops tend to run a little big on me so I order down. I haven’t ventured into the slacks yet, but that olive color (and the black of course) is calling my name! I can’t decide if I should order a size down from my usual size. Thank you so much for all you post!

    1. Hi risa, thanks! I haven’t had a chance to try the pants yet. I’ve found I’m pretty consistently a Petite Small across Eileen Fisher styles, including pants.

      1. Thank you! I’m 5′ 4″ so deciding whether or not to get a petite size can be tricky. I might have to order both sizes to find out which will work! Three cheers for dear Nordstrom’s and their return policy! I can’t wait to see what you post next!!!!!

        1. don’t be fooled that you are a petite if you are 5’4″ (or 5’3″ etc). if you are very shortwaisted (as i am with very short torso and longer legs) the pants typically will be too short and the rise won’t work. Similarly, i am big busted so the petite in tops usually has a smaller armhole scye (?) (opening) that makes that not work. Your idea for trying both sizes is a very good idea. I have learned to not even try on the petites. But your mileage may vary.

  7. Oh, the moto jacket!! Several in my wardrobe, the last one has embroidery on the back and sleeves and Im in my 7th decade!! . But, a word of caution: one needs a good mirror that reflects your derrière!! Nothing worse than an ample tush, wide hips and legs. The moto amplifies it!!

    1. I think there are *many* things worse than an ample tush. I rather like mine, and so does le Monsieur. 😉

  8. Thanks for the two highlighting the two Eileen Fisher pieces, love them both. I too have found their past few seasons “meh”. You really have changed the way I dress and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it! People mistake me for a native in our new second city(Amsterdam)! A big step up from my suburban California mom wardrobe:)

  9. I LOVE the way you look in the moto jacket & jeans; it’s fashionable & flattering! I love looking fashionable at 52 but I certainly don’t want to dress like a teenager! The linen paprika colored jacket is SO up my alley & can be worn almost all year in my state. I’m really enjoying your blog. I’m going back & reading older posts; I can always learn something from you!!

  10. LOve the moto jacket – but wondering if you are saying the last one (same) you had did not last five years?

    1. Actually I wore it for two years, and during one of my more ruthless “I-have-too-much-black-in-my-wardrobe” closet purges decided to turn it back in to Green Eileen. I regretted that one almost immediately.

  11. I love your hair and earrings in that photo. There’s just something so alive and happy about you in that picture.

Thanks for the honesty, humor and style. You’re the best!

  12. I agree about the EF offerings of late….lots and lots of “box tops” which translates to poor fit and proportion on me. I do loooove those crepe pants, though…..best travelers ever! As for buying early, I know just what you mean. I’ve been disappointed in waiting on really great pieces thinking I’d get them closer to the season, then finding them gone. Now, I buy it if it’s a must have and hide it like an Easter egg in my wardrobe so I forget it and find it later. One of the great things about a bad memory

  13. Curious if the women’s white sneaker trend in Paris is alive and well? or did you see a variety of colors or more basic colors, like black?

    1. Hi Cheryl, I saw a lot of white sneakers. And some black, some red, some metallic. Mostly all were sleek, classic styles rather than clunkier running shoes or trainers.

  14. Dear Susan, Many thanks for your inspiring posts! Could you Also offer Some ideas for short and feminine types? I am just 160 cm but not thin. I am always unsure about belts, hem lengths and shoes, etc. You do look ab fab while comfortable.
    Sincerely, Kristiina

  15. I have been looking for an appropriate moto jacket (not too short, not over-detailed) for about 6 months. I had to order the EF one immediately — I hope it looks as good in person. I never had any waxed cotton — is it easy to care for? Also, I love the EF stretch crepe pants and how every season there is a little tweak here or there (or a new style) to keep me current.

  16. Hi Susan
I did something I’ve never done. I ran out and bought the moto jacket after seeing it in your post. I have wanted a comfortable one for a long time For me leather is chic but stiff I love the cut which sits on the hip, is roomy and yet styled like a close fitting moto jacket. I’m expecting years of wear from it.

  17. I’m a Buy Now, Wear Later gal too, but I’m having trouble wrapping my head around fall styles so early in the season! Perhaps that’s because our summer is so short here in Canada and it came later than usual this year.

You look sensational in that photo, Susan!

    Elaine @ Following Augustine

    1. Thanks, Elaine. I tend to think of this season less as “fall” and more as “late summer,” if that helps. 😉
