Susan B of une femme d'un certain age wears a caramel coat, lemon print sweater and gold beaded bag.

For some time, I’ve been looking to add some playful, whimsical elements to my wardrobe. Whimsical, but not too frou-frou or twee or goofy. Ok, so maybe this lemon-print sweater is a little goofy, but I love it.

I wore this out to dinner with friends a few nights ago. I’m still figuring out how much color and pattern I’m comfortable with, and this little bit of bold pattern peeking out from underneath the coat felt Just Right. A striped or printed sweater or top is one of my favorite ways to add visual interest to a simple outfit.

I picked up this printed sweater on sale, as well as the coat. The coat is unlined boiled wool, so isn’t overkill for our mild winters. This color is almost sold out, but there are several others available.

I like how the bag adds a bit of texture and sparkle without being too focus-pulling. This style is sold out; here’s one that’s very similar.

Looks like the Meyer lemon bush we planted last year is working on a bumper crop!

  1. Never got the spam warning. Guess I’m special. Any ideas where I could find a quality NAVY belt. Seems that searching high and low hasn’t been effective.

  2. Susan, you’re loosening me up — which is a good thing. I used to confine my “holiday” daytime looks to my growing collection of Christmas scarves. I now have a low-key sweater and cute blue Scottie dog shirt from Talbots. Also picked up a darling navy tote bag at their after-Christmas sale, with holiday scenes of the River Charles on it.

I’m usually strictly aging (66) French femme but a little American whimsy never hurt anyone! Could I impose on you to do some styling of fake fur three-quarter coats? I live in Florida but it occasionally gets chilly.

Happy New Year to a great style inspiration!

  3. By the way, the search feature on your site is wonderful. So very useful. Sometimes one will remember an item, but forget the name or date of the post. Well done, whoever thought of it!

  4. Hi Susan!
I always look forward to reading your blog! Keep up the terrific work!

    Happy New Year!

  5. No spam message in the past week. You look fabulous, Susan!! Love the close-up photo with the sunglasses – they are wonderful with the coat! Happy New Year and many thanks for your blog! You have helped me so much, with color and particularly with packing.

  6. No spam warning but I never did receive one. Very fun outfit. I have trouble knowing what goes with what unless it is really really obvious. So of course, among many other reasons, having these terrific outfit photos is a huge help!
    Happy New Year to you!

  7. I am subscribed, but I have never gotten the spam warning when I link. Love the outfit – the colors are gorgeous and you look amazing!

  8. No span warning.
While I am always grateful and thank you for all of your advice and ideas – I would also like to thank the photographer (maybe your husband?) for all of the wonderful photos that come with your messages.
A Happy New Year to you both.

  9. Those Meyer lemons look delicious! Have you tried freezing the juice in an ice cube tray? I bet adding a cube or two to a favorite beverage would add some tasty pizzazz.

  10. Meyer lemons are our staple citrus here in northern New Zealand but we are attempting to grow a Yen Ben as it has a sharper taste. Although it’s temperate winters here, we are in a valley so get some frosts.
I too have been buying a few printed clothes to add variety. Love the coat, very “new you”.

  11. No spam warnings here, Susan.

I really do like that lemon printed top. It feels clever to me, not frou-frou.

Been absent from your blog a while. Just returned from an AMAZING trip to Chile and an “expeditionary” cruise to the Antarctic continent. On a scale of 1-10 it was a 25! Such a privilege to visit that majestic, inspiring part of our planet.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

  12. Love, love, love your new color palette! This look is especially nice because it is fresh and different from the old look and yet remains true to You!
No spam warnings! Happy New Year!

  13. Love your new color palette. I’m working on bringing in a bit more color.
I’m not getting spam warnings so it is fixed.
Wishing you and Monsieur a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

  14. I love the idea of a printed sweater. So pretty. And your backyard lemons are lovely! I would receive the spam warning periodically. The last time was a couple weeks ago. Haven’t seen it since.

  15. Love the coat on you. I like all your colour choices especially since you had your colours done. Really, you look so much more vibrant. Well done on changing old habits. Not easy but what a good change.
    FYI no spam

  16. Love this outfit on you! I have not been getting spam warnings as of late. I use Chrome for my browser, if that helps. Happy New Year!

  17. Considering how much I loved your style before you went to Red Leopard, I am surprised at how much I have been really digging your new aesthetic, and this might be my favorite to date. I’m a little bummed that I can’t wear any of your Spring colors, but I think the fact that you have moved away from colors i can wear has actually made me pay more attention to different elements in your outfits and what makes them work

  18. Hi Susan, I have some an unlined coat that I have brought to a tailor to have fun lining added. It’s not expensive. Rancho Tailer on Overland did mine.

  19. I’ve always been fond of print and am enjoying seeing it on you — I look forward to seeing your style continue to evolve in 2020. (And to continuing to get inspiration from your outfits, ideas, etc.)

  20. You are doing so well with the items for your new wardrobe. I like this a lot. It is interesting but not OUT THERE yelling.
That ring is lovely too and not expensive at all. I expected it to be so much more.

  21. You look amazing. You’ve always had wonderful taste but the addition of color has you glowing. Your skin, your hair. What a transformation.

  22. Beautiful color , love the coat! I clicked on the link as I am looking for a camel coat and the ligher blouce sounded perfect for NC, but sold out in my size. My eyes were drawn to those awesome platform loafers! They look very hip!
I love lemon prints and have a spring top with lemons, this is a lovely cashmere sweater, just what you need o brighten a grey day!
