Program Notes

Already planning next year's travels...
Already beginning to plan next year’s travels…

Due to a couple of very big projects at work now hitting critical mass, the day job is spilling over into evenings, which means that posting may be a bit lighter over the next few weeks.

A couple of housekeeping notes:

  • I’ve moved the blogroll from the sidebar to its own page, “Daily Reads,” which you can access from the tab on the top navigation bar. Unfortunately (and I’m truly surprised by this) there is no WordPress widget yet written that will provide a dynamic blogroll with most recently updated blogs/posts at the top. 🙁 I’m sorry about that; I know it was a feature that many of you used and liked.
  • I’d received a couple of emails from readers who were still having trouble commenting. I’ve made another adjustment to settings that I hope will eliminate this problem. However to keep spam to a minimum you must still enter a name and email (will not be visible or published) in order to comment. Please do email me at info (at) unefemme (dot) net if you continue to have trouble publishing comments.

Bon weekend!

  1. We did a Loire Valley trip two years ago–stayed in chambres d’hote. A word of warning: we rented a car and traveled on our own. Loved it. My parents at almost 80 did a Loire Valley cruise and pronounced it “boring.” We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our accommodations.

    1. Frugal, I think we’re going to rent a car this time as well. As we learned on our UK trip, getting around in the countryside is a whole different ballgame.

  2. I see that you still like the old-school materiality of an actual travel guide BOOK. Me too, although I do copious research on-line as well. There’s still something about poring through the pages of an anticipated travel destination . . . .
We were lucky enough to have a car as part of the house exchange we did many years ago, using Blois as a centre for exploring the various chateaux, etc. of the Loire Valley. I’m sure you’ll love it!

    1. Materfamilias, I’ve found that when trying to get a sense of an area we know little about, it’s very helpful to start with a guidebook. Once we narrow down geography and possible activities a bit, we pick up the research online.

  3. If you want any info about where we stayed, other tips–let me know. Tip one: bring a GPS–though ours mispronounced the words in a maddening way (rue was pronounced ree). Staying in a chambre d’hote is wonderful–you meet other people at breakfast (if there are others) and you get to see a wide variety of French life that you miss in hotels. And the included breakfasts are great. We were the first Americans in many places!

  4. A small comment about your daily reads…I love them but because I read them during my lunch break at work, it would be helpful to have a short description (like they used to) so that I could check out the ones that most interested me. Now I have to click through all of them and I just don’t have the time. Is it possible to go back to the short descriptions under the links?

    1. Debbie, unfortunately I’m not able to get them to display with the title of the most recent post. However I will try to categorize them more specifically if that’s helpful.

  5. I was not very taken with the Loire valley I’m afraid . The scenery is not particularly special , you have far better in California I think . Lots of chateaux ,if that is your thing , but I got chateau bloc after two or three . Lots of wineries too I guess . I was rather disappointed – sorry but have to be honest

  6. I just left a comment on another post here and it didn’t show up… Hm. This is a test comment I guess. Nothing like a great travel guide to get you through a work hump. Good luck.

  7. Giving it another try! The blog looks great. Makes me want to go all white background which, I’ve often heard, is the easiest on the eyes and best for display.

Hope you put Women of a Certain Age back on the blog roll. It’s more politics than fashion but there are many articles regarding “women of a certain age” too.

    1. CG, I’ve updated the blogroll to include Women Of A Certain Age. Not sure how your link was dropped, sorry about that!
