Reality Calls…
It’s only a paper moon, hanging over an ersatz Vegas Venice. |
Our long weekend is wrapping up, and we’re making the drive home today. The upside: we pretty much broke even on the gambling (which means we had a few hours of “free” entertainment). We ate well, had fun visiting with an old and dear friend who lives here, and did a wee bit of shopping. The downside: a long drive home, and all of our clothes reek of cigarette smoke.
I’ve been having fun playing with Instagram, though with mixed results. You can follow me on Instagram at @pseub .
It looks as though our ever changeable October weather has switched direction once again and we’re in for another blast of heat. But last week when we were enjoying some cool, almost fall-ish weather, I had fun putting together some layered ensembles, one in Dress-N-Boots mode, and another with a bit of pattern mixing.

Love the jacket/marinière combo with the scarf! I have a similar BR jacket and thought of combining it with my Petit Bateau marinière but never with a pop of color – it’s fab. Hot weather this week for us in Northern CA, but as soon as fall is back I’ll be wearing something similar.
I am also jealous of your beautiful Karina dress. Every time I visit the web site the color/size combo that I want is not available. I’ll keep trying.
Debra, thanks! I’m really loving mixing the mariniére with other patterns. You can always email Hilarylise at Karina, they sometimes have other fabrics available that aren’t up on the website yet. ([email protected])
Ilove all your photos, but the pics of yourself are a real achievement, moreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Sacramento, you are too kind!! Thank you and XXXXXXXX
I love! that second outfit. The long drape of the scarf is perfect within the jacket’s frame and together with the shoes, the scarf’s colours add just the right amount of jolt to a classic combo. Brilliant!
materfamilias, thanks so much! I love wearing the scarf this way, it shows off more of the pattern and isn’t bulky around the neck. I’m just to glad to have found a way to make it work.
Love LA – but will take a little cooler weather – am ready for my fall clothes! Outfits are great on you – You have provided the inspiration I need to work on my closet this week – see what is there – and what needs to be added.
ming, me too!! I’m ready for more scarves, sweaters and boots. Thank you, and have fun working on the closet.
Love your version of the navy suit with the scarf, the stripes and the shoes.
That’s Not My Age, thanks so much.
Love both outfits and that dress is an amazing fit! Always so sad when a great trip ends…but hopefully you will have a wonderful week ahead.
Thanks, Pam! The thing about visiting Las Vegas is, I’m usually ready to come home after a couple of days. It’s fun, but it’s quickly “enough.”
Really love the second outfit (I have that same J.Crew jacket.)
Cindy, thanks! This jacket has turned out to be a real workhorse.
Love that floral scarf with the stripes and leopard look. Tres chic!
We are about to get hot again, too. And just when I thought fall was here to stay for the duration!
Cigarette smoke and artificial air – two things I dislike about Vegas. But I do have such fun there.
Thanks for your instagram photos…I really enjoyed them!
Adrienne, thank you! What’s with this weather?? I had to come home and wash all of the clothes and shower last night, still could smell residual traces of smoke. I mind it less when I’m in it than that stale leftover smoke smell.
I can’t believe the weather here in LA. Will we ever get to wear Fall clothing? So glad you had a good time in LV. Both outfits looks great.
Kathy, thanks. I have fingers and toes crossed that it cools down by the end of the week as promised.
Fun must be the reason for going.
I have often wondered if I should go to LV but why?
I would rather go to Sonoma and taste the wine, I think.
Anonymous, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Personally, I’d rather go to Sonoma too!
As soon as I saw the dress, I knew it was Karina. Very distinctive and it looks smokin’ on you. The second outfit is equally fabulous!
Now I know I cannot go to Vegas because I cannot tolerate cigarette smoke! Are there any non-smoking areas in the Casinos?
Debbi, thank you so much!! Karina dresses are so flattering, and very comfortable to wear. Oh the smoke would make you CRAZY; it’s everywhere!
At least you’ll have a nice package waiting for you at work!
WendyB, yes indeedy!
You look terrific in both outfits, but I covet that dress! And I love the way you’ve styled it!
I’ve been enjoying your blog for a long time…so fun to get to know your style better through Visible Monday.

Cindy, thank you very much!
I love layering – it’s so much fun. You look very chic in both outfits. That is a really great reinterpretation of a navy suit! The unexpected addition of the yellow scarf really softens it up.
Veshoevius, thank you! I’ve been having fun experimenting with layering and pattern mixing. It took me a while to warm up to it, but I’m getting the appeal.
I adore your new boots, and the pattern mix in your “navy suit” outfit is especially great!
Amber, thank you!
Love your yellow scarf with your navy suit. Nice match!
Cheers,
Anne
Anne, thank you! (Actually it’s a light green, but does look a bit yellow in the photo.)
So, what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas? Breaking even is good….we are so bad at gambling, we might as well just write them a check and be done with it!
Great outfits, great shoes!! I’m also loving that yellow scarf!
Jeannie, thanks. I’m not much of a gambler myself. I assume I’m going to lose, figure out how much I’m comfortable losing, and then try to lose as slowly as possible. 🙂 But I’m finding blackjack is fun as a sort of mental exercise.
You always look so pulled together in layers, never limp or lost beneath them! Oh, cigarette smoke- would drive me wild. Can you wash it out or is that a big trip to the cleaner’s? Glad you had fun!
Duchesse, thanks so much! Yes, the leftover smoke smell is nasty, but most of our clothes are able to be washed. The inside of my car picked up a bit of smell just off our clothes; had to spray with Febreeze tonight!
You are so good at layering effortlessly!
I’m hooked on Instagram- following!
Bella, thank you!! I’m getting the hang of Instagram, just always forget my hashtags!
Love the navy “suit”! I just bought my first navy blazer and am currently obsessing over outfit ideas, so now I need to figure out my own variation of this 🙂
Closet Coach, thank so much! I’ve found this navy blazer to be very versatile, and have been quite pleased with it.
You do layering with such STYLE. Love your scarf with leopard print shoes. I haven’t tried Instagram yet, but it’s tempting.
Judith, thank you so much! I’ll bet you’d love Instagram. It’s just another way to have fun with images.
So glad to hear you are having fun! I particularly like the navy suit. That is how to do polish without pain! Please note, you inspired my blog from today and are mentioned with a link … thanks again for “Who Do You Think You Are?”
JaninJabiitt, thanks so much! And thank you for the link. I’ve bookmarked your blog post to read when my brain is a little bit fresher. 🙂 So flattered to have inspired your own thoughts.
Ugh, don’t you just hate how cigarette smoke permeates everything? And I used to smoke, too, but now I just can’t stand it.
Dress ‘n boots combo is wonderful, and so is the second outfit. I too have adopted a uniform of a indigo Tahari “blazer” — which is really a blazer front with a stretchy jersey back — and jeans. And when I’m not wearing that, I’m in a dress and boots!
For the second outfit, I would have been too timid to mix three patterns, and probably would have stuck just the t-shirt and the scarf, but that’s just me.
Sisty, it’s a tough smell to get rid of, that’s for sure. Your blazer sounds great, and very comfortable. It did take me a long time to go for the pattern mixing, maybe just took my eye a while to get used to seeing it. One of the fashion rules I was raised with was to NEVER mix or wear more than one pattern at once, so I had a lot of conditioning to overcome! 🙂
I really love the scarf pictured in the second photo. What a stunning effect.
