nic +zoe vest

Back in June when we were visiting Paris, I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Tish and going shopping at her favorite “neighborhood” boutique. You can read all about that wonderful afternoon here. This top was one of the pieces I purchased, and at the time realized I’d have to find a pair of red shoes to set it off. It took a few months, but I finally have the perfect pair! They’re from Belle by Sigerson Morrison, and seem to be built on the same last as the other wedges I have from this brand, which fit my feet well and are very comfortable.

The bracelet is from Metal Pointus, purchased on a previous trip to Paris, and it’s one that I wear often. The vest is one that I featured in this post and it’s from Nic + Zoe. (Plus option here.) I think it runs a little large; you may want to size down. This promises to be a great “Third Piece” for those days when it’s too warm for a full sweater or jacket (it’s a cotton knit).

I’ve taken these shoes in to the cobbler for waterproofing and to add some rubber half-soles. I tried this outfit with my red Ines de la Fressange bucket bag but the overall look bordered on too matchy and twee (at least for me) so I’ll stick to something more neutral for the bag.

Do you wear colored shoes? Or do you prefer to stick to neutrals and add color elsewhere in your outfit?

  1. The shoes – gorgeous and worth waiting for! Loving the third piece as well, and looking forward to our first cool day xoxo

  2. I wear those red Munro’s on the widget. Susan, over at FiftynotFrumpy showed me how to style them so I feel great about wearing them now. I Love your red shoes and the way youVe put it all together!

  3. I love colored shoes. I think they help round out the personality of an outfit and they make me happy when I look down. That’s really what it’s all about. You look really nice in these lighter colors. You seem happy and light!

  4. You look so pretty and carefree! Love the hits of red at lip, shirt, shoes. I have mostly neutral shoes, with many in the nude-bronze-camel-brown range. I try to replicate my streaky dirty blonde/brown hair color at the other end of my body in shoes! Closure, you know…

My mother wore red shoes so well. I’ll never forget seeing her at a tea party/coffee klatsch as a child. She was a slim small brunette in a fitted red bateau neck wool dress and her fashionable red “spike” heels (as stilettos were commonly called).

  5. I am really getting into colored shoes and now I need RED!! What a great outfit you have put together as always! Those shoes are beautiful…

  6. What a wonderful outfit! If you’d described it to me–patterned red shirt + long camel knit vest–I think I might have rolled my eyes. But it looks SO GOOD. I tend to be a bit conservative in what I combine; you’ve taught me something important today and inspired me. Also, love the shoes. I love a red shoe: it can really make the outfit as long as it isn’t, as you said, too matchy-matchy.

    1. SoSuSam, thank you very much! It’s always fun to experiment, and sometimes we find a formula that works in the process.

  7. As a recent and enthusiastic convert to your blog, I have enjoyed browsing through your archived posts. It seems as though you had a significant style epiphany in 2013, and your current wardrobe choices seem to be a reflection of a new confidence.

  8. Nice look. Woman can not live by solid colored tops alone.
The camel vest (that doesn’t cost $800) has the possibility to be a staple this season.
I like sweater vests in my workplace, which is cool. They keep your chest and legs warm but don’t drag across my desktop and keyboard.

    1. RoseAG, thank you! I was very happy to find this vest, and have already worn it in a couple of different combos. It’s surprisingly versatile!

  9. I love that red and camel! This outfit is great on you, bringing back a bit of the colour you’ve moved away from over the past few years as you built a classic foundational wardrobe. It really works to express the warmth of your personality and liveliness of your intelligence while maintaining a certain elegant restraint.

    1. Frances, thanks very much! It’s been fun to play with adding back bits of color now that I feel comfortable with the foundation.

    1. Kim, thank you! I’m actually a little bit west of you, but the landscaping is probably quite similar. Hancock Park is such a lovely neighborhood!

    1. Josephine, thank you! Wedges have definitely been an acquired taste for me, but I like the visual volume they add.

  10. Soooo envious of your abiilty to wear beautiful and colorful shoes! My size 11 AAA foot limits my choices – pretty much have to stick with S Weitzman or Munro. Would kill for a pair of red or leopard D’Orsay high heels…or even some pointy toe flats that fit!

    1. Pam, my MIL had the same issue with very narrow feet. I’ll try to keep an eye out for brands that offer a good range of sizes and widths.

  11. I love that you’re adding more color to your looks – it’s inspiring me to go beyond black, gray and white myself. Have wanted red shoes since I was 5…now that I’m 50 maybe it’s time to get some, size 10 feet be damned!

    1. Karen, thank you! I still love the look of black and white (and denim) and think they are always classic and elegant, but sometimes a little color just adds so much oomph. You should absolutely find some red shoes if they’ve been on your wish list!

    1. Petite Silver Vixen, thanks so much! I know exactly what you mean, and that’s exactly what I’m going for. 🙂

  12. My first thought upon seeing the picture: oh wow, she’s wearing a print! And color!

It looks great. I am not sure how I feel about wedges, but those are great shoes. I have lots of colored shoes! Red suede loafers, leopard loafers, forest green smoking slippers, antiqued silver oxfords, a couple of different navies, botanical print espadrilles, and a ton of colorful sandals. I do love shoes, and while I have plenty of different black shoes (for example), it just makes me happy to have some different, colorful choices!

  13. OMG, these are so ridiculously gorgeous! I have a definite “thing” for red shoes & have more than is entirely reasonable. But they go with just about everything!

  14. What a wonderful look! I love to wear colored shoes, and they are typically my pop of color for an outfit. I’ve got two favorites–one is a red brick colored patent leather pair and the other is a reddish (on the purple side) suede pair. And I think I’ve got a red suede wedge pair similar to yours packed away with my “soon to emerge” winter pieces. Kudos for your look; I’ll be looking for a similar vest.

  15. The second you put this on, it was YOU. You look so pretty and your red shoes are perfect. Love the way you’ve put everything together — unexpected and chic, which is what personal style is all about ne-c’est pas?xox

  16. Love all the pieces, but I think the camel colored vest is a miss with this ensemble. It’s a great piece, but I’d prefer to see it with all black or all cream underneath.

    1. CJ, thanks for the feedback. I’ve actually imagined trying this vest with a white top and jeans, will report back.

  17. In the past, my shoes were black and browns. But, I LOVE. The pop of color brightly colored shoes gives most any outfit. I call it instant modern! I esp love the reds like the pair you’re featuring. Simple gorg!

  18. Perfect shoes! I just bought blue suede/patent Taryn Rose wedges, which look similar. They are now my go to shoes. And I love your jeans. I’m trying to find similar, affordable (for me) jeans. Jean at the blog Extra Petite suggested Loft Skinny. I so enjoy both of these blogs! Thank you for putting yourself out there.

  19. I love coloured shoes and especially red. These are really lovely. Pointy toe, very elegant AND you can walk on them all day. They are not cheap but if they were available in The Netherlands, I would buy them straight away.
Your outfit is fantastic. I love the top and pairing it with neutrals was a very good decision. And with the red shoes of course…..

  20. I love the poncho. I just bought one in London a couple of weeks ago. I am in the love it camp. It looks smart, is easy to wear and is very versatile. It is perfect to air travel. Now that I am back home and fall has arrived on the east coast, I keep mine in the car if it is not part of my ensemble for the day. I reach for it so often.
