Room With A View

The Lake District was so incredibly beautiful, I’ll mostly let the pictures do the talking. We only had one full day there which we spent mostly touring the lake and surrounding areas, including a visit to Beatrix Potter’s house.

The day started out cool and cloudy, but by early afternoon the sun was out and the day turned absolutely GORGEOUS.

Ready for my close up, Mr. DeMille.

Beatrix Potter’s house, known as “Hilltop,” was as delightful as you’d imagine. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside, but the cottage has been maintained as it was when she lived there, and each room has her books open to illustrations that reflect details in the room. Interestingly, this site receives a lot of enthusiastic Japanese and Chinese visitors. On the way back, one of the ferry boat driver explained that children in these countries often learn English beginning with Beatrix Potter books, so her books and characters are very much beloved there.

Yes, there were rabbits in the garden!

We’re in London now, quite a contrast to all of this bucolic splendor, but very exciting and energetic. We’re off to do some sightseeing (and perhaps a bit of shopping) and have a meetup with another blogger scheduled for later today. Cheerio!

  1. My first trip to the UK was to the Lake District and then Scotland, during my 8th grade year, so you can imagine how I am enjoying your recent posts… I still remember the Lake District as one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The weather, as I recall, was similar. We must have gone in the spring too 🙂 Happy Travels, and enjoy London, a favorite city of mine. Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  2. So romantic! I want to use words such as ‘utterly’ and ‘splendid’. Bucolic on the other hand is such a weird word, don’t you think? It sounds like an illness.
I love hearing about Miss Potter. You have made me want to revisit the gorgeous film. Her books, a treasure. I brought my son home from the hospital in a Peter Rabbit outfit. He’s 20 now (my son, not peter rabbit).

  3. I had to just sit on the top photo for awhile and soak it in…life is hectic here, so it is nice to live this moment along with you. I so wish they allowed photos in the house, but I understand! Were there bunnies around?? Have fun in London!!

  4. Thank you for posting these lovely pictures. I have never been to the Lake District but have heard about it a lot.
I love Beatrix Potter and the movie with Renée Zellweger and music by Katie Melua.
