An Easy Spring Cardigan Outfit That Works All Day
There are times when I find myself reaching for the same pieces over and over — the ones that don’t require a lot of fiddling and are comfortable all day long. In our coastal climate, days that start off chilly can be quite warm by mid-day, then cool down again when the afternoon breezes pick up. A lightweight layer that I can button up in the morning and ease open by noon is practically a wardrobe requirement here.
That’s exactly why this camel cardigan has been on such heavy rotation lately. It’s relaxed enough to feel effortless, but the classic button front and that warm, neutral tone make it look intentional — like you actually thought about what you were putting on. Paired with my favorite barrel jeans and these woven loafers, it’s the kind of outfit I can wear for morning errands and still feel pulled together for whatever the rest of the day brings. And did I mention it’s surprisingly budget-friendly? More on that below.
The Budget-Friendly Cardigan I’ve Been Wearing on Repeat

My sizes: Cardigan – XS, Jeans – 8 Petite 👉use code SUSAN15 for 15% off the jeans
This Quince cardigan is 100% cotton with a weight that hits the sweet spot — substantial enough to actually keep you warm, but not so heavy that you’re overheating by noon. The drape is what really won me over; it skims the body rather than adding bulk, which makes it easy to wear open over another layer or as a top with a scarf as I did here. I’m wearing it in Camel, and there are several other colors available — I’ve already got my eye on the Ivory.
One more thing worth mentioning: it’s machine washable. For a piece I reach for this often, that matters.
A straw basket bag is my other secret weapon for this time of year. It instantly lightens up an outfit and signals spring even when you’re still firmly in cardigan territory. This one is from Sézane — it has longer straps so you can wear it over the shoulder, plus an attached drawstring pouch inside to keep everything secure. I’ve been using it as an everyday bag and find the size just right, though there’s also a larger version if you tend to carry more.
While We’re on the Subject of Quince…
The cardigan isn’t the only Quince piece that’s earned a permanent spot in my closet. I’ve been quietly ordering from them for a while now, and the quality-to-price ratio continues to impress me. A few current favorites worth a look:
If there’s one thing this outfit reminded me, it’s that the best pieces in your wardrobe don’t have to be the most expensive ones — they just have to work hard and feel good to wear. This cardigan checks both boxes, and at this price point, picking up a second color is an easy yes. I’d love to know if you try it, or if you have a Quince favorite of your own. Drop it in the comments below!

The Quince cashmere wraps are wonderful. They are just the right amount of stretchy to wrap well, at a price point that isn’t a disaster if you forget it somewhere.
I also like their silk blouses for work.
I have been shopping at Quince for awhile, and share some of your favorites – the silk tanks and cashmere V neck. I also find their short sleeved Ts (I wear V necks) to have a good weight and style.
Susan, I’m so tempted by this cardigan. I’ve looked at it several times recently as I am in need of a new cardigan (or 2). I had my color analysis last month and found that I am a brown summer. After years of thinking I was an autumn I have very little in my closet in my new colors. The Dove Gray would be perfect and I might stretch to the Charcoal but I am wary of the dropped shoulders. I have narrow shoulders and a larger bust and depending on how deep the drop is that style can add bulk where I don’t want it. Sometimes sizing down helps. Did you size down?
Hi Kathie, yes, I sized down to an XS. (I’m usually a Small in more fitted cardigans.) And I’m usually wary of dropped shoulders as well, but because the knit on this one is “swingy,” they don’t seem to add bulk where I don’t need it. 😉
Thanks Susan. I just ordered it in a Small. I have both small and medium Quince items so I’m keeping my fingers crossed as the light gray fills a gap in my wardrobe.
I love the Quince Featherweight Cashmere Silk Frayed Edge Scarf- such a great price, very versatile and perfect for travel. It folds down to a manageable size, so I never feel overwhelmed by fabric. I found Quince thru this site so thank you.
I would love help from everyone in finding regular-length cotton tee shirts with fitted sleeves to the elbow. EF used to make a few of these, but their shapes are too boxy on me these last years.
I counted 30 Quince items in my wardrobe! That cardigan, well, there isn’t a color that interests me (dark winter, not even the green), and I’m not a fan of big horn buttons. I recently got the Bella relaxed straight jeans (love) and I’m a fan of the linen pieces. I’ve had the straight pants going on four seasons, and last year got the button down. It’s as nice as J Crew. The Clare V moyen messenger knockoffs are stellar. I have the smooth in black and the woven in taupe. The leather has broken in so well. Wish they had petites!
Great outfit, Susan! I love the way you elevate jeans so stylishly. Those of us who are retired, or work from home, spend most of our time in jeans. For me, this means trying different styles of jeans (I love the barrel jeans you’re wearing here) and trying different accessories and proportions. Even when we go out for dinner, most people are still wearing jeans — even in upscale restaurants.
With the new wide-leg jeans, I am finding I need more cropped tops — which are scarce in my wardrobe. Tunics and wide jeans can look frumpy if I’m not careful. Thanks for all the great ideas!
I bought this sweater last year and agree, it’s a great piece! I’m curious if you would pack it for a trip, though. I did, and it got so wrinkled in my suitcase, plus it’s a little bit bulky.
I have two of the Quince cashmere fisherman sweaters, but they have become wear-at-home only for me due to the pilling. My Jenni Kayne fisherman sweater has held up much better.
Hi Tracy, I usually travel with only cashmere and wool sweaters. I do find cotton a bit heavier and bulkier to pack, and it takes longer to dry (and can be heavy) if it gets wet.
Does the woven of the Paul Green loafer feel uncomfortable? Some I’ve tried on for spring in woven fabrics are unbearable. Also, I never think about bringing out my straw bags til much later. Thoughts? Thanks
Hi Barbara, the leather on these woven loafers is soft, and they were comfortable right out of the box. I’ve worn them for dog-walking, errand-running and extended periods on my feet, and they’ve never rubbed or been uncomfortable.
I don’t think there are any set rules about when a straw bag is appropriate. It probably varies by region, and by what the weather is doing.
Hi Susan: I’ve been getting some cotton sweaters from Quince also and liking them very much. This particular cardigan: Do you think there’s enough structure in the sweater for me to wear? Also, I’m wondering if you’ve gotten any other of Ruti’s pants? They look so darned comfortable! (and she has linen now!)
Hi Sally, the cut and material on this one might be a bit soft for a Dramatic Gamine. You’ll probably be happier in a style with set-in sleeves.
Thank you so much Susan!
Hi, Susan, i have been eyeing that cardigan. As a blue autumn who also can wear some leaf colors as wows, do you think the Big Sur green would be too cool? Many thanks!
Hi Linda, I think Big Sur Green would be great for a Blue Autumn!
Wow, it looks great on you! I have it in green, and it’s very unflattering on me. Mine is much shorter and wider, and the fabric is thick and heavy. I wouldn’t recommend it for those with a large bust.
Old Navy has a dupe of this cardigan. Seaside Cardigan. Same price, even. I bought it in all six colors, at regular retail, because they are all so pretty! I wear one almost every day. I style them with jeans, a white or coordinating tee and a small scarf. Speaking of fiddling with clothes, I have a love/hate relationship with scarves. They never stay put for me. They twist, unknot, unroll… Any advice?
I love all your Quince pieces on you. I have ordered several items from Quince but most of their sweaters do not fit me. I am barely 5′ and they seem to be at least 2″ too long for me, which is a big ‘darn it’ for me.
If you can wear the Quince cardigan, it is a winner. It looks amazing on you, Susan and on other bloggers. as well!! For me it was a disaster. I have a larger bust and a rounded back. These two figure flaws in combination made this sweater hang wrong. I just thought I needed a larger size. That didn’t help. When I looked at it in profile, I discovered the harsh truth. Sadly, it was not going to be a win on me.
I love this cardigan. I also have it in camel and just ordered it in ivory. So comfortable, washes beautifully and feels good on. I generally don’t wear cardigans often but this one feels fresh.
love the cardigan and all things Quince.
Yes! I have a charcoal grey cotton pullover and a blue rain jacket from Quince; both great quality and workhorses in my wardrobe. Just bought the linen jacket in navy and already love it. I’m a big Quince fan 😊.
You curate some of the best looking ensembles.
Thanks very much, Robin!
Your cardigan looks gorgeous – great colour, classic style and the perfect weight!
Thank you, Maria!
I’m a Spring, like you… and I have had trouble finding Quince items that work. I’m interested in hearing from you if their navy is good for us Springs?! Thanks.
Hi Stacy, it depends on the item, but the cashmere and any pieces listed as “Deep Navy” might be a bit dark for Springs, other than on the bottom half.
Hi Susan,
I’ve been wearing the Quince cardigans for a couple of years now. I have five of them! I love the fabric, the fit, and colors, and the price. And yes, the fact that they are machine washable is a huge plus. I usually wear the sweaters buttoned up, over a tee shirt. Just add a scarf and it’s a great look. Oh, and the big buttons give these cardigans some added personality!
