spring weekend getaway

Spring weekend in Vegas travel wardrobe
day: hat | sunglasses | shirt | bracelet | bag | jeans | shoes
night: earrings | top | ring | bag | pants | shoes

Yes, I know it’s only Monday, but I’m already looking forward to the weekend. Le Monsieur and I will be celebrating our 20th anniversary with a long weekend road trip to…

Vegas morning

that bastion of Over The Top-ness, Las Vegas. I’ve never been much of a gambler, and le Monsieur is less and less so over the years, but we do really enjoy the splendid selection of restaurants, the opportunity to see a show, to wander through surreal and ersatz environments, and to just have some “off the clock” time to relax and unwind. In fact we’ve found that the few hours’ drive acts as a wonderful decompression period, so by the time we arrive we’re relaxed and ready to enjoy ourselves. We have a multitude of options here, and can do as much or as little as our mood dictates.

Because we’re traveling by car, size and weight of luggage isn’t an issue, but I still prefer to pack light. I used to feel compelled to take a lot of dressier options, and rarely ended up wearing them. Like everywhere else these days, “Smart Casual” will work in Las Vegas for almost all venues. As of this morning, the weather forecast looks pleasantly warm, but I tend to get chilled in air-conditioned environments and will bring lightweight layers.

I’m going to be test-driving a couple of items in advance of our more extended vacation in May-June, and will report back.

How many items do you usually pack for a long weekend trip? Do you have favorite destinations for weekend getaways?

  1. Happy Anniversary! For a long weekend, I’d probably pack about six items, since my sweetheart doesn’t care if I wear things repeatedly. Even if luggage isn’t a problem, like on a car trip, I still just don’t want a lot of things with me. I think I’m minimalist to the core of my soul!

  2. How lovely and Happy Anniversary! I used to think 20 years was such a long marriage and here I am over 3/4 of the way myself. Sounds like you’ll have a wonderful time and can’t wait to hear about your packing.
For a weekend like I this I definitely would not worry about laundry so would pack multiples and not worry about everything mixing and matching. Typically a travel outfit (bf jeans/light jumper), dinner outfit (dress or skirt/silk blouse or top/shawl/heels), sightseeing (tailored pants/cotton shirt/smart enough accessories for a nice lunch), dinner (dress or skirt I didn’t wear the night before/dressy top/shawl/heels), last morning (pants/blouse), travel home (jeans/shirt/shawl). I’d pack at least 2 pairs of shoes, 2 bags and some dressy jewels.
I am crazy about those wedge heels and so sad they don’t seem to come in US5. Your outfits are perfect!

  3. Love it all. How does the fedora pack? Do you roll it and does it hold shape? Beware of the Eileen sandals and heel rubbing. I had to return mine & Nordstrom said they had many complaints about them. Just ordered the taos sneakers nd the ecco sandals from your China trip for an upcoming Hawaii trip. Considering the fedora is it packs well.
    Enjoy Vegas!

  4. Happy 20th Anniversary! I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip! Your packing ideas look just perfect. I’ve only been to Las Vegas once (a business trip for my husband) and found it interesting. I abhor gambling, so thank goodness the food was great and the views were entertaining.

You asked where some of us go for a weekend getaway. Most often, we drive 85 miles to our farm and have a peaceful weekend there. Our favorite other place to go is Santa Fe. It’s a short plane trip from Dallas and we always feel transported to a very different place. The smell of piñon pine in the air, the great New Mexican cuisine, the adobe architecture, and the endless art venues have held our interest for over three decades.

  5. Happy 20th Anniversary! Glad you’re having a long weekend getaway, and I love to go anywhere now by car. We tend to go to Ojai Valley for our weekend getaways, and never leave the grounds of our hotel, except to go for a horseback ride (on occasion.)

  6. Most of all, wear comfortable shoes because it can be a mile or more from the entrance to your room. Also, casinos still have smoke even with the new air systems; I don’t gamble but still have to walk through clouds of smoke at times. I don’t take any clothing I have to dryclean. The temperature changes from outside to inside are so considerable I always take a wrap or jacket anytime I leave the hotel room.

  7. Sounds like huge fun– happy, happy! As a conservative Protestant, I don’t like gambling, but love the shopping, dining and recreation options of Nevada.

We live just outside of the Finger Lakes, so one of our favorite weekend getaways (or even for just a day trip) is Corning, New York. Charming, small, highly walkable. Also love Ithaca, New York, for the hills, waterfalls, cultural amenities of Cornell, especially the galleries…

  8. My husband and I have been married a long time, and we always say that the first twenty years are the hardest. 🙂 Happy anniversary.

  9. I love both of these outfits! They are perfect for a weekend in Vegas or just about anywhere. It is always a challenge for me to pack light but after a trip to Europe last year for our 20th I actually meet the challenge. I found that the most important items to pack in regards to my wardrobe were comfortable shoes, a swimsuit and a couple of bras. Everything else can be easily adapted or purchased if forgotten.

    Happy Anniversary!

  10. Happy Anniversary! I also like to travel as light as possible…leaves room to pick up a few new things on the way!

  11. Happy 20th anniversary! One of my favorite memories is of the 20th anniversary trip my hubby and I took to NYC 13 years ago (I can’t believe it’s been that long!). He surprised me every step of the way with things he knew I’d love to do….Touring the Frick Collection, a facial at Mario Badescu, a Broadway show, shopping, walks in Central Park, and dinner at The River Cafe in Brooklyn. It was magical!

  12. First and foremost, Happy Anniversary! My husband and I are going to Las Vegas at the end of April so I appreciate the ideas which I feel I can easily adapt to that timeframe. We are visiting the Loire Valley at the end of May-first part of June. I have never been to France so I was most excited to find your blog full of fabulous ideas. I would greatly appreciate any advice on packing for France at that time of year. As I read it appears that the weather should be a little warmer than when you traveled there last year, am I correct? I always pack too much and I am doing my best to follow your guidelines (my husband will be thrilled!). We will mostly be visiting the smaller towns (Bourne, Chinnon, and Beaugency) and are hoping to visit several wineries.

You have no idea how your blog has grabbed my attention! I am 54 and will never live long enough to visit all the places I want to see. I love Eileen Fisher clothes (have never purchased any shoes), a regular Nordstrom shopper, would give up my garage before I would do without my Nespresso machine. I almost feel like we are related! Please, any advice you can share I am ready to be a sponge, after you get home from Las Vegas that is! Hope you have a splendid time.

  13. LAS VEGAS!!! I just love that place. I hope your aniversery trip to there would be fun. and the collection you showed above is mind blowing. especially, that gogs n’ bag.

  14. Thank you for the great ideas. I, too, have been reading a while and not commenting. I am heading to Vegas from Chicago next weekend, and have a hard time imagining dressing for warmer weather and haven’t been to Vegas for 20 years.
I love your style and I feel blessed to live near an eileen fisher outlet store!
    Happy anniversary and safe travels!
