A spring-leaning outfit with straight leg jeans

Most days you’ll find me in a pair of jeans. I love to play with different silhouettes and washes. But for versatility and ease of styling, it’s hard to beat a straight leg style. Today I’m sharing a polished casual outfit idea with straight leg jeans.

Susan B. wears a straight leg jeans outfit with J.Crew jeans, sweater, and sweater jacket. Loewe puzzle bag and Aeyde flats.

While there’s more rain on the way, we’ve had a few almost springlike days that have me looking forward to a change of season. While it’s still too cool to put aside my sweaters, adding some color and going a bit lighter with my accessories makes this outfit feel more spring-y.

If you’re looking for jeans with maximum versatility and ease of styling, my recommendation would be a straight leg style, medium wash, with little or no whiskering or distressing. This classic straight leg jean from J.Crew ticks all of those boxes. Plus, it has just a little bit of stretch, so is comfortable to wear. They’re available in Regular sizes 24-37, also in Petite and Tall sizes. (I’m wearing Petite 28.)

I’ve had that bag for a few years now, and keep coming back to it. Yes, it’s spendy, but the quality is outstanding (mine still looks like new, even after traveling with it). But if your budget is tight, here’s an “inspired by” style for well under $100.

Is there a particular jeans style you wear most often?

  1. Love this look and glad to see a longer sweater jacket. Amazon has similar ones for around 50$, if anyone is interested. I have one in black and the quality seems to be very good. How nice to go out in such a lovely outfit and come back to your beautiful home!

    1. Love the colour combinations. Also the glasses…can you share the brand?
I’m a Spring and am definitely going to put those colours together for our autumn here in Melbourne. Thanks for all the work you put in to keep us so well informed.

  2. You look great and wear jeans perfectly, however I have never liked them for me or felt comfortable in them.
How about showing your outfits as you prefer then show an alternative choice in a pant?
    Just a thought ……

  3. You do look fresh and Spring like with a lighter sweater and cardigan too. The shoes definitely help. Srihbd here we are getting snow so I’m in furry lined boots (tan) I found in Sweden or ir Denmark I believe ( yes, they’re THAT old)from the 90s? Earlier? I don’t wear them much but today wind chills are in the 20 range so really cold for us. I hadn’t needed to wear these boots the last two to three winters but this year!
My jeans are either straight leg or slight flare ( kick flare?). I’m retired and a very casual dresser. I have few clothes but feel the need to update my wardrobe. I’m 5 ft 3 and around 127 lbs-128lbs depending.

  4. Beautiful colors and they work so well together. The handbag is gorgeous–is the ziptop opening large enough to easily get things in and out?

  5. I love wearing jeans. Thanks for this post. The weather here is slowly changing and I’m loving it! I fell in love with a brand from HSN, believe it or not. Diane Gilman, they’re comfortable, have plenty of give and launder very well. Never stretch out of shape. I prefer the straight leg, but also have the flared bottom for higher heels.

  6. I love the soft pink top and darker pink glasses on you — so pretty. As far as jeans go, I once had a pair that fit and I loved them so much — a flat front, side-zip sailor-ish style with long, slightly wide legs. They were absolutely perfect. But that was 15 years ago, LOL. I haven’t found any I liked since then.

  7. Love the outfit! I pretty much live in jeans too.
But, I’m thinking about getting a pair of Eileen Fisher lantern pants. I think you have a pair in brown? I’m wondering about sizing. Did you get ex small? I want a roomy fit, not baggy. I’m always a 6 or 28. Haven’t shopped EF in a long time so any info will help.
Also wanted to add….your outfit is a great example of how all colors in your color season work together.
    Thx, Susan.

    1. Hi Linda, thanks! I’m also usually a 28 in pants and have taken either XS or Petite S in Eileen Fisher pants.

  8. Understated and very classy. I love the shoes! I have a high instep so they probably wouldn’t work for me but they look great on you.

  9. Your cardigan makes the look so polished. I am not a cardigan woman. I think I own one thick one which I never wear.
I think my go-to jeans are baggy. I love my boyfriend jeans by G-Star Raw but they have reached the end of their life. I am reluctant to buy them again as there are so many different styles available now. I bought a lot of wide legged jeans but they are not as easy as my boyfriend jeans. Straight and flared are also in my jeans pile. As they pinch me more in my stomach, they are not ideal.
