Spring bags to lighten up your look

Susan B. wears a green coatigan, floral blouse, jeans, boots, and carries a bamboo bag.

Spring can be a fickle time of year, weather-wise. One day it’s tee-shirt weather, the next we’re back in coats and boots. One of my favorite ways to make even layered-up outfits feel more spring-like is to swap out my leather bag for a straw, rattan or bamboo bag.

I’ve had this bag for a few years now, and still love it. While this isn’t a bag I’d use for a day of running errands (I’ll opt for a crossbody for those days), it does provide a nice accent for my “going out” outfits. And it’s really lightweight to carry.

Straw, wicker and bamboo bags evoke a lighthearted attitude that feels perfect for spring. (Think of a young Jane Birkin with her iconic wicker basket bag.) They’re often quite affordable, too.

This one’s available in a few colors, but I thought this pink was really fun. Use small pouches to keep small items secure (and make it easier to transfer between bags).

I really like the fun macrame netting on this one (also in camel and black) and the drawstring top closure.

A good-looking straw tote for those days when “the essentials” include a bit more than phone/keys/wallet…

This adorable bucket bag has both a shoulder and crossbody strap.

The round bamboo handles are a nice detail here.

and here’s the Jane Birkin-esque option!

  1. I am in love with the whole outfit as well as your purse!!! I bought the green coatigan after you featured it earlier. Do you find it is too heavy for this time of year? Again you look fabulous and just like spring!!!!!

    1. Hi Jill, thanks! As to the coatigan, it depends on the day. We’ve had both quite warm and quite chilly days this month!

  2. These bags are like pieces of art. So pretty. I really beat up my bags quite a bit, in and out of car, toting papers, glasses, etc. Would need something more resilient, but could use a bag like this for day in the city or concert. Thanks for post.

  3. Susan, I had the identical bag to the one you’re carrying in the photo, back in the 1970’s! I should have kept it!

  4. Question for you and all the readers: at what point in the year are you comfortable breaking out wicker or straw bags? I try not to get too bogged down in “rules” but March seems early. Or maybe it’s just the 24 degree temperature and snow flurries today . . . .

    1. I think it does depend partly on your climate. If you’re still wearing a parka, it’s probably too early. 😉

  5. Hi Susan
Wonderful outfit. Where did you actually get the sweater coat? Really pretty color and design. You look great in that green shade, like the Darel green sweater I also own.
The bags are cute but something I would not carry. Too much like going to a picnic for me and I live in year round warmth.

  6. I do like the look of the wicker bags, but in the past, have found that they ‘pill’ my clothing when the bag is rubbed up against what I am however, I do love your boots – especially the colour. I hope they are as comfortable as they look.

  7. Wow. That outfit is A++++++++++. A work of art. I was almost too dazzled to notice the darling bags.

  8. I’m thinking a neutral linen purse organizer would keep things corralled in the wicker bags and be easy to switch from bag to bag.
