Transgressions

So…my spending moratorium isn’t quite going according to plan. First, there was the Banana Republic scarf. Not a big deal, but then Talbots re-issued our favorite boatneck tee in lovely fall colors, and I had to pick up two (or four). I don’t feel too bad about those either, as they’re real workhorses in my wardrobe, and will definitely earn their keep.

And then these shoes crossed my path, and when I realized they were available in wide width, it was like a sign from the heavens that I was supposed to have them.

The Garnet Hill leopard print coat is still taunting me.

I think I need to lock myself in a dark room with no internet connection for the next few weeks.

  1. Il n’y a rien a faire, deja! Nous tombons tous amoureuses de belles choses à l’occasion, ce ne sont que de petites douceurs après tout, allez!

    Orane

  2. It’s smart in all senses of the word, IMO chere Pseu, to buy a tried and true basic or gorgeous shoe in your unusual size. Paris is for the grace notes (fabulous coloured cashmere, accessories). And if I had five euros for every time I found great shoes but desoleé, madame, not in your size…

  3. Sorry, only one more enabling voice here. I’ve been beating myself up for a recent purchase or two (or five), and they’re not even as practical as yours. As IndigoAlison says, the effort at restraint is really useful for focus, for testing desires, but finally, if you know something is useful or believe it beautiful, buying it anyway gives you one more puzzle piece for assembling the style that really is you.
At least, this is what I told myself yesterday!

  4. Pseu – all spending moratorium rules are off where fashionable wide width shoes are being considered(if they are a good buy, then so much the better). Of all the items we wear, shoes, to me, are most important – we walk on them, stand on them, etc. If they are not comfortable, then that has physical ramifications. I can put off a new coat or whatever, but I HAVE to have shoes that fit, feel good and oh yeah…look good too.

  5. Miss Janey completely understands and sympathizes w/ Miss Deja Pseu. If MIss J imposes a spendng moratorium, she stays OFF Ebay & OUT of shops completely. Otherwise, there is always something to catch her eye.

And that coat is too, too tempting.

  6. I too tried so hard to refine and pare down my spending. It made me think more, it made me wait a little longer. However the desire to have something new, something that updates, reinvents, or just refreshes is overwhelming and sadly i capitulated far too soon.

  7. Ooh,I didn’t know there were new colours of the Talbot’s tee and your post on the Garnet Hill coat has taunted and tormented me ever since I saw your post. It is in my cart and I have not yet hit submit. I would have gotten the red shoes–but they did not have them in my size.

Your spending moratorium is going to cost me money.;-)

  8. indigo16 – true, I have been thinking more and pausing before I spend. In that respect, it’s a good exercise.

Orane – oui, qu’est-ce qu’on peut faire, alors?

Duchesse – “grace notes,” I like that, and it’s a good way to put the idea of shopping in Paris into perspective.

    wendyb – aww, thanks!

materfamilias – yes, my threshold has definitely been raised from “like it” to “love it”. Holding off on buying has also made me go through my closet with a fresh eye, and try some combinations I might have shied away from previously.

toby – it’s so rare that shoes I love the best are actually available in wide, so the “scarcity fear” does seem to make me more inclined to snap them up.

LBR – oh yes, new colors, lovely fall colors, great colors for redheads! I’m a bad influence, I know.

Miss Janey – I can see how ebay (and etsy) would be trouble. So much incredible stuff out there, but fortunately not a lot of it is my size.

  9. Dejapseu:

Au contraire, I would say you could repeat that experiment from the early 1990s, when a person was locked in a room with only a PC and an internet connection and had to function fully with that kit 🙂

One could get groceries, do work, order pizza, download films to watch, chat with friends on Gtalk or Skype, and of course, order fashion clothes. Life can be lived on the internet.

Please don’t lock yourself up without the web.. We read your writing and will miss it 🙂
