Spring Outfit Idea: Casual With a Dash of Boho
Happy Tuesday! Hope your week is off to a good start. Today’s outfit incorporates a little dash of “boho” with a crocheted top.
Boho (fashion-speak for Bohemian) is one of those style genres that can be both timeless and trendy. The sheer and flamboyantly ruffled styles Chemana Kamali sent down the runway for Chloé for spring 2025 are definitely more trendy. I’m not a ruffles and lace kind of gal, so my take on boho is a little more simple and understated. Boho-lite, if you will. Which, IMO, is more on the “timeless” end of the scale.
Boho, but keep it simple…
No, I didn’t intentionally set out to match the furniture! 😂 After featuring this top in a collage last week, I decided to check it out at my local Madewell store. It’s a nice little “going out top” that can dress up or down. (It does run a little small; I sized up to a Medium.) I’m wearing a camisole underneath. Here I styled with the Quince linen pants, and Everlane fisherman sandals. (I’ll probably wear this for the family Passover Seder.)
Even if your Style Personality isn’t Bohemian (Natural + Romantic), there are ways you can incorporate aspects of Boho style, if it appeals to you. Textures like suede, crochet, velvet, silk (but stick to natural silk, not synthetics) can subtly nudge your look in that direction. Details like embroidery, studs, and woven leather are also a nod to boho style. Here are a few of my “understated Boho” picks…
Johnny Was Embroidered Blouse – $350
Tonal embroidery keeps it elegant.
J.Jill Ikat Print Tunic – $119
Love the print on this top (color is good for you Summers & Winters). In Regular, Petite & Tall sizes.
Woven Leather Tote – $198
This dark green color is so good!
Studded Suede Sandals – $118
If I didn’t already have too many sandals, I’d jump on these.
Open Stitch Sweater – $158
Here’s a slightly longer style you can dress up or down…
Cord Pendant Necklace – $14.99
This is just one of several designs, also in silver.
Leather Huarache Sandals – $99.95
Four colors available, these are well-reviewed for comfort!
How do you feel about Boho style? Is it something you incorporate into your outfits?

Is your hair thick? It’s cute.
Thanks, Amy! No it’s actually thin and fine, which is why a shorter cut works best for me.
I love that sweater and it looks great on you. So glad huaraches and fisherman’s sandals have made a comeback.
I was really surprised to click the link for the pants and find they’re from Quince. The pants look FAR better on you than they do on the Quince website — in fact, I’d previously dismissed those pants (based on the Quince photos) and am now reconsidering. I really like the way the pockets are designed.
I thought the same thing about the pants! They are NOT flattering on the Quince website at all, but are VERY flattering on Susan. I’m also considering trying them out, as they are quite reasonably priced and the linen from Quince is nice quality!
Thanks, Bette! I love these pockets too!
Love that outfit! I didn’t think I was a “boho style” girl but This is lovely!
Hi Susan, I’m looking at those Quince linen pants and wondering how they fit petite girls. I see you have them cuffed and I know you also wear petites. Would it be necessary for me to have them hemmed at 5’2″?
Thanks!
Lisa
Hi Lisa, I’ll probably have these hemmed just about an inch. At full length, they hit just at the top of my foot.
Thanks so much, Susan. Love the barrel pants too but, again, the length is always an issue. Saw some great Rag and Bone barrel leg in white yesterday at Bloomingdales but no petites!
Banana Republic, which I could always count on for petite sizing, has replaced petite dresses with tall. So discouraging.
I was so tempted by those studded sandals, but when I checked them out in the store, I found that they have zero padding – the footbed is hard as a rock, sadly.
I do love the textures of your combinations. Do you have a suggested clothes steamer?
Linda Jacks
Hi Linda, thanks! Here’s the handheld clothing steamer I use: https://amzn.to/42zJMnD I’ve tried a few different ones over the years and this one really holds up & gets the job done.
Nicetops. It reminded me I have such a jumper in my closet. Will wear it today.
Greetje
Thanks, Greetje!
The sweater, which is lovely, is NOT crocheted. It is a knitted garment created with machines that can make openwork stitches; hand knitters have all sorts of ways to know open work stitches to similar effect, using two pointy needles and their creativity. Crochet is a similar but different process which uses a single hooked needle to create openwork or solid fabric. The fashion industry often misuses the word crochet to describe anything lacey or with lots of holes, and it makes those of us who know the difference and who are experienced in the two crafts and/ or have worked in the business cringe.
Thanks, Ellen, for the clarification. I do find retailers tend to be a bit loose with their terminology. 😉
This is totally off the subject of your post but I was wondering where your living room carpet was purchased. I love the colors which would work well in our home. Thank you so much.
Hi Denise, thanks! It’s the Mahalia rug from Pottery Barn here, https://bit.ly/3RdUNos though the color I have doesn’t seem to be available now. They do have lots of options in different designs but similar colors.
Is the Madewell sweater off white or more yellow? I am definitely a summer but I look better in a softer white/creamer off white color.
Also, I usually wear a medium, so perhaps a large in this sweater would be better for me?
I love the sweater on you and I am short wasted, so I don’t think it would be too short to wear at my lovely age of 69!
Thank you for your advice. You always look so beautiful and you have been very helpful to my fashion choices!
Thanks very much, Jayne! The color of the sweater is definitely a creamier (warmer) off white. I’m usually a Small in most sweaters and the Medium was a good fit, so going up 1 size is probably right.
