A fresh take on the denim jacket for fall
A “trucker” or western denim jacket is a classic, and one of my wardrobe perennials. But if that style feels too rugged for you, or you’re just wanting to change it up a bit, I’ve corralled some updated denim jackets for fall.
(As it’s been so cool on our coastal road trip, I have jackets on the brain. I would have made good use of another casual jacket this week, and wish I’d brought one of my denim jackets.)
Same fabric, fresh look
This chic peplum jacket in dark wash denim can be worn casually or dressed up for an evening out.
An elongated version of classic denim jacket style. I love the side pockets! Sizes 00(0/2) to 4(20-22). Here’s a similar style in a pretty warm pink.
Here’s a longer shirt-jacket style you can wear belted or unbelted.
This one’s a bit more spendy, but the textured, contrasting stripe on cuffs and bottom band is such an excellent subtle detail!
Although this relaxed collarless jacket is also available in a medium wash blue denim, I really like this camel color for an unexpected option. Sizes XX-Small to XX-Large.
A classic denim jacket, but make it leopard print! Sizes 00(0/2) to 4(20-22). Petites here.
A softer silhouette, zip front, and drawstring waist give this dark wash denim jacket a more sporty look.
Chore jackets are another versatile casual jacket option. This one in an off-white denim fabric has a fun swing shape.

Great selection Susan! Also take a look at the linen jackets with natural hems from Tommy Bahama. Wide selection of color and pattern choices. They are a favorite of mine.
I found a great ecru denim chore jacket this summer at Old Navy. It’s currently on sale for less than $40. It’s a nice change from my 25-year-old much-loved DKNY trucker style.
In the fifties is cold to me. I love my trucker denim jacket. Although I like all the different versions, I will stick with my original. I could use one in a lighter wash though.
I love, love your vacation wardrobe. Also enjoyed the video.
These are great choices — thanks! One additional option would be Lafayette 148 denim jackets. They had a lovely, simplified moto jacket in dark denim this year that I’ll look forward to wearing come fall. They also do very nice simple blue or black denim jackets that are great for travel because they don’t wrinkle and look classic.
This is my first post, Susan, and I wanted to say I am especially enjoying your travel wardrobe suggestions ,
and how well you present them. If Canada gets the Green Light to enter the UK, I shall be packing for a much anticipated driving trip through the West Country of England.
I just ordered the elongated denim jacket after seeing it this morning…a different take on a denim jacket that I know will be very useful. And I particularly enjoyed the video on colours that suit, and explored Red Leopard.
I live in an oceanside community that faces the BC mainland, so our climate is usually tempered by the water,
but very hot here lately, as elsewhere. The new normal?
Most of these jackets don’t work for me. The classic shape isn’t the right shape for me, the denim is a terrible colour near my face, so I have very few items of this.
