Fall In White Denim

I’ll admit, I still flip through some of the Fashion Weeks “street style” photos each season. Sure, they’re mostly images of fashion insiders, celebrities, and big name influencers (who are provided items from brands to be photographed in). And yes, many of the “lewks” tend to range from overwrought to just plain silly. But I still do find some style inspiration there. Usually it’s about color combinations, or shapes and silhouettes.

A White Jeans Outfit For Fall

This round, I kept noticing white denim, and how it’s being incorporated into Fall outfits. I was inspired to put something together myself. I could’ve gone monochromatic, but decided I wanted to incorporate a little fall color. 🍁

I’m happiest in clean, simple shapes. These “coatigans” are one of my favorite pieces this season. The Burgundy is such a wonderful, bold color, and I love it paired with something in leopard print. I’m wearing a lightweight top (Plus option) as our weather is still mild, but if it’s cooler where you are, you could easily replace with a cashmere pullover.

I love this bag and use it probably more than any other. Yes, it’s pricey but I can vouch for the quality; after over a year of frequent use, it’s softened up a bit, but shows no other signs of wear. Here’s a style with a similar aesthetic that’s a bit more affordable. And a cute little croc-print satchel that’s well under $100.

I picked up these mules during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale and wear them often. If you prefer a shoe with a closed back, here’s another comfortable and good-looking style.

Do you wear white jeans year round?

  1. here in Maryland it is still very warm in mid October. this year I bought my first pair of white jeans and I even wore them over the weekend with a black denim jacket and a black and white striped top
it felt a little uncomfortable for me but I did it anyway and I have to say that outfit looked great! i’ll be keeping the white denim jeans and my white denim jacket in my closet just a little bit longer!

  2. White jeans are fine for spring, summer and fall, but I really prefer a winter white or vanilla color for winter.

  3. LOVE white denim year round! Paired with ‘fall colors’ give such a great ‘unexpected’ look! You are my favorite style blogger…if that’s a word……I look forward to every edition!

  4. I just gave my white jeans to Goodwill. I always felt like a painter or hospital orderly in them. I don’t know why I buy colored denim. I always opt for blue.

    1. I agree! I think they look great on other people but I don’t wear skinny jeans nor white jeans. I’m tall and curvy and it’s just too much white fabric on me. I do love black bootcut jeans so I stick with what works for me.

  5. if I wore white jeans in Spring/Summer I would look to stretch them into a warm October.

I do like the closed-toe shoes. I put my sandals away last week, not because too cool to wear them, with the sun setting earlier and long-sleeved things being a possibility it seemed like a good adjustment.

    1. Hi Rose, yes, I’m feeling the same. Even though it’s still warm enough for sandals, closed toe shoes are feeling more appropriate right now.

  6. The burgundy JCrew long cardigan looks much better in your photo than in the online photo from the website. I may have to give it a second look at the JCrew website.

      1. I bought the burgundy color in this item fall and I love it–even though I haven’t worn it yet. For my colors, it is sort of a neutral. It is a great weight for the San Francisco Bay area and I can probably wear it at least six to seven months out of the year.

  7. I am in white jeans right this minute.
I was a little disappointed in the Fashion Week street style photos. So little to latch onto. I admire the boisterousness and vivacity, and some people really use fashion like performance art. More power to them if they can pull it off. But some of it just seems to be outrageous for the sake of outrageousness, rather than saying something creative. And some things are just so blatantly commercial, they turn me off. Maybe I’m just old and jaded. But some seasons ago, I saw things I would really want to wear.

    1. I felt the same about the FW images…seemed like it was either about the sneakers or weirdness. But there were a few good outfits.

  8. I’m in Calgary Canada and I keep my white jeans in the closet all year round. I wear them if it is dry and sunny out, which happens quite often even in the winter when it is cold out.

  9. Once the snow flies, white pants get ruined by slush, splash marks and dirty car doors. The snow flew early in September this year. Spring, summer and fall took place between May and August. Sometimes I wonder if summer clothes are necessary at all, but when it’s hot, it swelters.

    1. I get that. We’re lucky in that we don’t usually have a lot of muck to deal with in winter. I probably wouldn’t wear these on a rainy day when they’d stand a chance of being splashed with dirty water from the street.

  10. This has been a difficult concept for me as I grew up (as have many of us) with the firm rule of “no white after Labor Day”) But rules are meant to be broken. White jeans do look great with a pop of leopard print. And I have always liked the look of medium to dark gray with white jeans. I also like white jeans paired with a blue chambray shirt or a blue denim jacket.

    1. Hi Rondi, what IS it about that rule that made so many toe the line for so long? I love a white denim and chambray mix too!

  11. An all white ensemble like the one above reminds me of my professional duties in the ER, the colorful cardigan and leopard color slides notwithstanding. A better ensemble for white denim would be something other than a plain white top, perhaps something that would incorporate the colors of the cardigan in some fashion to pull it all together.

  12. Very nice outfit and very you!

Quick question – heading to Paris early January. Which one of your Paris posts would you recommend?

      1. Thank you – just did a deep dive into your Paris posts – very helpful. I’m doing the 10-12 piece travel wardrobe for the first time and quite excited to travel light. Looking forward to hearing about your coming trip to Paris for any further tips.

  13. I just this afternoon returned from a visit to Provence…St. Remy and vicinity (it was heaven!!). We saw and wore white jeans everywhere. They have had a very warm fall, just as we in the U.S. have had, and the jeans seemed appropriate. Also saw lots of your leopard prints anticipating fall! I discovered it was easy to pack for our trip…three pairs of pants (white jeans, dark blue jeans, and a pair of less casual navy blue pants; three or four tops, a jacket and/or sweater, scarves; comfy shoes and a good crossbody bag!)….thanks for your suggestions…the Cole-Hahn silver sneakers were much admired!

    1. I remember seeing a lot of white jeans in Provence when we visited in the Spring too a few years ago. So glad you found the packing suggestions helpful!

  14. Love white jeans for year round wear. My current problem is finding “real” denim in white.
The last ones I purchased online turned out to be canvas, not denim. I kept them, but still
looking for real denim in white…something an older woman can wear, not too skinny. Any suggestions?

    1. I guess I’d have to ask what you mean by “real” denim. No stretch? A certain texture? I like a little stretch, but also for the fabric to be opaque. J Brand and AG are two brands I’ve had good luck with.

  15. Living in a warmer fall/winter climate , white jeans are always an option for me. I love them. White jeans and a white cashmere sweater is something I like a lot.
Viewing Fahion Week from several years ago was interesting, especially the use of animal prints which are so prevalent today.
Love the coatigan on you, great color!

  16. Very nice transitional look for this time of year. I live in a snowy, slushy climate come the winter so probably would pack away the white jeans and leopard slides. I like the long cardigan style and recently gifted myself two cashmere versions that I find extremely versatile. They look more ‘finished’ than the shorter version and help lengthen my somewhat short height. If I lived in SoCo right now I would totally adapt Susan’s look for the autumn season ( adapt simply because I am not a burgundy fan and would sub deep purple or forest green)
Kudos to you Susan for offering different examples of your bag in various price points.

  17. I love burgundy with leopard! And I do wear white jeans into fall. Maybe this year I’ll continue that into winder, we will see. I tend to forget them in my closet once the weather turns cold.

  18. So funny to read your blog today as I ordered some white jeans this weekend. Will wear them with my wardrobe staple J Crew chambray shirt or a white v neck tee or button down and the Juliette sweater jacket (thanks so much for that post!) in the camel color. Love that sweater as it glides over my less than stellar bottom. I’m a jeans girl and just got tired of the dark jeans/light jeans look. I’m also short so I like to dress tonally top to bottom. Ordered the Dr. Scholl’s Kinney shoe in greige, so incredibly comfy for my difficult to fit feet, to complete the look. Still warm here in New England so no need for warm socks yet. When the weather turns cold I’ll wear them with a black turtleneck or tunic and some black boots. My thighs are never going to be model thin and I just need to get over the “never wear white pants if you have big thighs” school of thought. At 63 I need to dress for me and start feeling more comfortable in my own skin. I’ve earned it.

    1. PS Swung by Nordstrom this week and they have that Vince Camuto top in two different shades of burgundy and hunter green! They’re fabulous! I don’t know what I’d do without your blog! I just love your wardrobe suggestions. Keep up the excellent work of keeping us all fashionable.

  19. This is not one of my favorites. Too much contrast between the stark white and the burgundy. Love the accessories though. I would probably do a cream color or winter white instead. Susan, I know the pants and long cardigan/jacket are your look, but you should mix it up a bit more. A longer straight skirt would look great on you and would achieve that same lean look you’re after since you’re short like me. I’ve got the pants and long sweater look down, but I’d love to see more variety. Also, where I live it’s very hot and humid from June til today actually so pants in the summer aren’t the most comfortable unless they’re linen or paper thin cotton, so more variety in summer clothes ( other than the pants and long cardigan or tunic) would be most appreciated.

  20. I teach kindergarten so white isn’t always the best option for me-lol! You look so sharp in this! It also reminded me of an outfit for worn by one of our younger teachers last year. She wore white jeans with a tall camel boot and a blush flowy top. It was such a great look on her as well!

    1. Hi Jill, funny you mention, but I was just thinking about trying these jeans with my lighter brown knee boots! Now I’ll have to! 😉
