Who’s zooming who?

Is Tory Burch really just Chico’s with an attitude?  You decide.

Tory Burch, $174. (on sale at Nordstrom)

Chico’s, $89.

Tory Burch, $495.

Chico’s, $79.20.

Tory Burch, $325.

Chico’s, $119.

While I recognize that there are some differences in styling and materials, the overall aesthetic sometimes seems strikingly close.

Can you guess which of the two retailers offers this unfortunate top?

  1. Ha! While I occasionally see a TB piece I might buy at a really good sale (50-70%, something nautical, for example), I generally think it’s something I’ll leave for The Sopranos’ Carmella to pick up. We don’t have chico’s here, but I get the point and I’m giggling, with Glamorous above. . .

  2. I’m guessing the last pic is Tory Burch. Not a big fan and think her things are too expensive for what they are. Personally, Chico’s is one of my favorite stores. I don’t love everything they do but I think they keep the woman over 40 in mind.

  3. Fun post, good eye!

Tory Burch is not my taste; I have not found them very well-made when I’ve examined them- badly finished seams and cheap findings.

That last piece is TB, I’m sure. Have Chico’s abandoned that rayon ethnic print patchwork stuff?

  4. I’ve never checked out the clothes because I couldn’t get past the loafers with the big gaudy logos.

When it comes to someone who started by designed shoes and bags and then graduated into women’s clothes, give me Kate Spade any day.

  5. Naturally I don´t know these labels at all. Both look uninteresting. I should see them in person to give my final verdict.

  6. I have never understood the appeal f Tory Burch. It’s unflattering and ugly for the most part. If it makes the 20 yr old skinny models look like crap, then who exactly would look good in it?

The first tim I saw any Tory Burch the word “Boca” immediately sprang to mind. There’s something very “Golden Girls” about it.

    Blech

  7. I do think Chicos is copy-catting a little bit. And like LPC I am going to have to work hard to get your comparison out of my mind as I love Tory.;-)

  8. TB has always made me think of middle-aged swingers dropping their keys in a bowl circa 1977 –not just I because of the prints, but because of the feel of the fabric.

I’m actually mysteriously drawn to a lot of 70s-era color schemes, so I should be more inclined to give her stuff the proverbial benefit. But…nooooo. If I *had* to choose between the two vendors I’d take Chicos!

  9. Vix – YES!! It’s that whole “Ice Storm meets Pacific Palisades” vibe!

I do really like some of TB’s shoes and bags, but some of the clothing really conjures for me an image of rich 70’s housewives playing tennis in the morning and spending the afternoon poolside with with a pitcher of screwdrivers (and the neighbor’s nineteen year old son in a speedo, but that’s a story for another time).

  10. Chico’s stuff is made like junk and I’ve heard that Tory is too. At least Chico’s is a little cheaper. For Tory’s prep look, you can just get stuff at LL Bean. She even made some very expensive knockoffs of Minnetonka mocs!

PS You can view the Tory top with the ill-conceived print on a model on the TB website.

  11. Great post! I am sort of over Tory, but you can get great inspired bys as you have shown.

Tory quality is not worth the price, IMO.
