What I love this week: winter wardrobe lifters

Winter accessories to elevate your outfits now, and wear into spring…

Metallics are shaping up to be one of the major style trends in 2023, but I think they’re a perennial, and a great way to zhuzh up an outfit without going overboard. (To that end, I suggest one metallic item per outfit, not including jewelry.)

Metals & shine

Where weather allows, you may be considering a fresh pair of sneakers. If you want something with a little more oomph than plain white (but still classic), consider metallic. Metallics are a versatile and easy-to-style option. These are well-rated for comfort, and also available in Silver.

More metallic sneakers:

But if you need something more weather resistant, these patent look Chelsea boots are waterproof, and well-reviewed. Also in Ivory and Rose patent. (Patent finishes continue to make a strong showing for 2023.)

I know a lot of you are fans of MZ Wallace bags, so when I spotted this one from across the store, I knew I’d have to share. It’s very good-looking (not in-your-face blingy), roomy but lightweight, and has a canvas crossbody strap so could be a good travel bag. This style is also available in a gorgeous Anthracite/Silver for you cool-toned folks.

  1. My daughter and I are interested in coming from Florida for a color analysis on April 28th if you are available.

  2. Love the white gold Ecco sneakers you featured first but the price is a little out of my comfort zone for sneakers. I see that they are Euro sized as 8-8.5. My shoe size is a true 8 so they might not fit me as 8.5 is too big and 7.5 is too small. At that price I feel they should offer full and half sizes. Then I got excited about the metallic slip on sneakers from Nordstrom when I saw the price was under $100. I followed the link and the price is actually $170. Only the grey ones are on sale. They are also Ecco and Euro sized as well. Still thinking about the first pair. They are darn cute.

    1. Hi Kathie
I find the soft 7s a perfect fit. Most comfortable shoes I own. I am also a true size 8. I will say tho, I have a narrow foot.
They have excellent arch support as long as the arch hits your foot at the right place.

      1. Thank you. You are so right about the arch support. I went to Dillards to try on a pair. They didn’t have the white gold so I tried some dark brownish red. The 7s fit perfectly. Loved the red color so bought those and will order the white gold.

    2. I recently read that because white hair is bright clothing worn by a woman with white hair should also be bright. Please respond. Thank you.

      1. It really depends on your skin tone and contrast levels. If your seasonal palette is one of the brighter ones (Spring, Winter), then yes, you can probably wear bright colors.

    3. I have one pair of ecco sneaks and while spendy they are soooo comfortable. I have high arches and the support is amazing.

  3. Susan I’m tempted to try the coral cashmere and silk scarf from Black. In my mind I think it would be beautiful with the olive green coats I have. I’m supposed to be a dramatic gamine autumn—and I know there’s a terracotta color available—but the coral is so pretty and I think it would be an unusual combination. What do you think?

    1. Sally, there’s also coral in the Autumn palette. The coral scarf is on the pinker side, but if your best colors are among the more vivid, it should work.

      1. Thank you Susan! I should look again. My best colors I think are reds browns olives and golds (I’m guessing). My prior assessment was a wee bit chaotic and on line 😉

  4. I have several pairs and styles of the Ecco Soft 7 sneakers and always reach for them. My favorite is a silver pair of zip ankle boot/sneakers that is fabulous! If anyone’s on the fence about trying them, just go for it. [Restraining myself from ordering the woven slip-ons — love!]

    1. PS. I should add that I first discovered Ecco shoes when I stopped (chased after) a woman on the sidewalks of downtown DC to ask about her shoes. Since acquiring my own pairs, the same thing has happened to me several times. They are really the perfect combination of style and comfort and quality.

  5. Love this suggestion about metallics. Best investment I ever made was a pair of bronze gold/rose gold metallic slip-on loafers. They look perfect with anything, and three years later, I’m still getting compliments every time I wear them.

  6. I bought the small size mz wallace tote a few months ago and I can vouch for it being a great travel and anytime bag! It is extremely light and has the “right” amount of pockets for me.

  7. I adore the color of that scarf. I’ll be on the lookout for a less pricey version. But it’s a good reference!

  8. Love the rain boots, but I’ll add that they are not patent leather. They are synthetic with a patent leather look due to the sheen.
