Lightweight Sweaters That Don’t Itch: Chic Wool-Free Knits
With my mostly casual lifestyle and mild climate, I live in sweaters for much of the year, and I’m always on the lookout for styles that feel both polished and easy. Over time, many of you have shared that you’re sensitive to wool, cashmere, and other animal fibers—or simply find them too warm for your climate. That’s why I periodically seek out wool-free sweaters and lightweight knit layers that are comfortable, wearable, and still feel pulled together.
Wool-Free Sweaters & Lightweight Knit Layers I’m Loving Right Now
While there are plenty of acrylic and other artificial fiber options, for this roundup I’ve stuck with cotton and cotton blends, as they are more breathable and tend to last longer. (You can click on images or any text in red to go to product page & shop.)

Cotton-Silk Crewneck – $120
A classic crewneck with a touch of silk in the blend, which gives it a softer, more refined feel. (The V-neck version is shown in the collage above.) Available in multiple colors, with some currently on sale.
I’ve tried this on and found it runs true to size for a slim-but-not-snug fit. If you prefer a more relaxed silhouette, consider sizing up.
Double-Breasted Sweater Blazer – $129
A travel-friendly sweater blazer in a cotton-blend fabric, ideal if you prefer a longer, more tailored silhouette. Polished enough to elevate casual outfits while still feeling comfortable.
Available in Regular sizes XS–4X, plus Petite and Tall options.

Cotton Crewneck – $89
This lightweight cotton-blend knit is easy to layer without feeling flimsy. I especially like the subtle textural detail at the collar and hems, which adds interest without fuss.
Offered in several colors, sizes XS–XL.
100% Organic Cotton Sweater Jacket – $59.90
An easy, polished layer that works well as a light jacket alternative. Available in neutrals as well as stripes and colorblock styles, with lots of five-star reviews.
Sizes XS–XL. A great budget-friendly option!

Rugby Stripe Sweater – $89.95
A rugby-style pullover made from 100% cotton, featuring a woven collar and a relaxed, sporty feel. Available in solid colors as well as stripe combinations.
Regular, Petite, and Plus sizes available. (These are often included in promotions, so it’s worth checking for discount codes.)
Relaxed Cotton Cardigan – $149
I love the navy-and-camel stripe combination here—also available in a multi-color stripe and a solid orange option. A relaxed, easy cardigan that still feels intentional.
100% cotton, sizes XS–XL.

Sierra Springs Cotton Cardigan – $189
While Pendleton is best known for its wool pieces, they also offer some beautiful cotton knits, including this relaxed open-front cardigan. I’m showing the back view here so you can see the full pattern.
A portion of proceeds supports non-profits focused on Native American language preservation and training for Native healthcare providers.
Classic Rollneck Sweater – $98
This 100% cotton rollneck is a perennial favorite. It’s offered in solid, marled, and striped options, and cut for a relaxed fit.
Runs slightly large; sizes XXS–3X.

100% Organic Cotton Fisherman Cardigan – $49.90
I’m always drawn to a collared cardigan, and this one strikes a nice balance between relaxed and pulled together. Available in three neutral colors.
Sizes XS–XL.
Wool-Free Sweaters Worth Keeping on Your Radar
If you’re sensitive to wool or simply find it too warm, there are plenty of beautiful alternatives that still offer structure, softness, and ease. Cotton and cotton-blend sweaters can be just as polished, while feeling lighter and more breathable — especially for warmer climates or layered looks. I’ll continue to update this list as I find new pieces worth sharing, so feel free to save it for future reference.
If you’re still looking or want to compare a few more options, I’ve gathered additional wool-free sweaters and knit layers below. Think of it as a living collection I update as new pieces catch my eye. (Reading on a mobile device? Keep scrolling to see all products.)

Hi Susan, is the opening collage spring or summer colours? Trying to develop my eye 🙂. I’m guessing spring due to the colour of the sweater. Thanks!
Hi Terri, the collage was intended to be more in a cool, Summer palette. On my monitor, the pink sweater looks close to the Rose color from the Summer palette.
Thanks for answering her question on season and tone…..I also have a question on styling cardigans…..I like cardigans and what is a good styling tip to style them so 1) you don’t look/feel frumpy and 2) you don’t look too prim and proper. I love your style and how you look and didn’t know if you have a certain approach or thought process. Thank you
Hi Susan, thank you for all of the sweater options in cotton. Since I don’t wear wool or cashmere, I’m always looking for cotton options!
Thank you for this…..I am sensitive to wool but love breathable sweaters. Also, when I clicked on the link for the roll neck sweater, the Pendleton sweater comes up.
Hi Gmarie, thanks for letting me know! I’ve updated the link in the post; here’s the correct one: rollneck sweater
I like a cotton/silk blend in a sweater.
Susan, I can attest to the Nordstrom Texture sweater. It is a wonderful cotton fiber. I liked the Navy so much that I went back for the Moss green and Ivory also. The XXS worked great for my Petite frame ( 4’11’, 110 lbs.). I find that I am becoming more Skin sensitive as my Skin is becoming Dryer with Aging, so I am always on the Look-out for Non Itchy yarns. I also find Cotton- rich Sweaters are able to ” Bridge” between seasons easier. I am currently wearing the Nordstrom sweater layered over a tank-top or a Light , thin Tee , depending on the Temperature outside.
I will admit, sweaters are the easiest garment to wear. They don’t pull, they give you freedom of movement and you can get them for every temperature. I do have a lot of them, but often I long for something more adventurous. Usually, that results in me coming home with a silly purchase.

Susan, THANK YOU for all these yummy options, I will definitely return to this post to add some choices to Karma–although the prices now are really quite doable. Like another person here, my skin is getting drier and more sensitive as I get older, and these blends are perfect!🌞💕
