Working It Out

Reminder to self: Lipstick!!

For the sake of marital harmony and my own sanity, I’ve relieved le monsieur of photographer duties. He always seems to favor the angle that makes my bust look disproportionately large.
😉

Rust/grey is one of my very favorite color pairings. Objective here was to balance a softer cardigan with a professional look for the office. I’m pleased with this result overall, though optimally shoes would be closer to the same color as tights.

Sweater, top and skirt: Eileen Fisher. Sweater from fall collection, not currently available. Top is this one, but in Graphite (may be available in that color in stores, isn’t online). The skirt is the same version as the black one from a couple weeks ago, but in Graphite (dark grey), available here. This graphite color is the closest I’ve found to that Parisian grey that commenter Lagatta and I refer to as “lead pipe.”
Scarf:  Hermès, “Les Toits de Paris” (Rooftops of Paris) Tied “cowboy” style, will add a tutorial for this one soon.
Shoes: Paris booties again. Have been on the lookout for something similar in grey. May have found some, will report back.
Earrings: Vintage, from Beladora2.
Tights: Nordstrom brand, Grey Flannel.

  1. The shorter skirt plus the booties are what (imo) make the outfit. Very good proportions for you. A great work uniform. I have shoes like that, but I can barely stand in them–I wobble in any heel. Must try again…

  2. There is a sale tomorrow, and I am finally going to buy the foldover skirt. I hope I love it. I’ve tried it on so many times! You look fabulous!

  3. Wonderful. I’m wondering, for some reason, whether a shorter length on the shirt might improve upon perfection? In the length of line thingamabob? And Monsieur. Well. Yes:).

  4. You go from strength to strength, girl! Those booties, the cardi shape, the scarf — they twist this classic look just enough (and your haircut helps as well).
Add Pater’s name of the list of alumni from the M’sieur-leDuc school — although I give him points for effort, and he is improving. He took six or seven of me the other day, and not ’til I went to post them did I see that I’d apparently spent the morning with my coat on the wrong buttons!! Even with the lens pointed straight at me, he hadn’t noticed. . . You’d think that all those seconds of me standing there with a silly smile fixed on my face would have given him to spot such a major error.

  5. Very nice! The long-over-short + tights & scarf really works for you. I definitely see a signature look in the making.

    C.

  6. Very flattering ensemble! I”ll go back and look at the skirt length. But, I have a question. Does Eileen Fisher make a foldover skirt that can be adjusted for length? If so, if this what you are wearing?

  7. I don’t know why but I picture you with a white shirt (blouse) instead of the grey shirt (t.shirt) in this outfit. You managed to capture yourself in the perfect angle!

  8. Paula – I love the look of a whilte blouse, just not on me. They tend to gape between buttons, and as I don’t tuck in, develop a real crease across the waistline by lunchtime. I’m almost strictly a knit top kind of gal these days. Thanks!

coffeeaddict – thanks so much! This scarf is one of my favorites, and the color coordinates really well with so many other colors.

metscan – thank you! Actually, these booties do have about a 2.5″ heel. It’s just hard to see in the picture.

L’age moyen – thank you very much!

frugalscholar – thank you! The heels on these are on the chunkier side, and I actually find them very easy to walk in.

Duchesse – thank you! I think part of the problem is just that the menfolk tend to be taller than we are, and don’t want to duck down.

Sal – thank you so much!

    Anonymous – merci beacoup!

Julianne – I do think it’s a wonderful skirt because it’s comfortable, and it’s easy to adjust the length. Hope you like it. Thank you!

  9. Ah the scarf! I’m smitten. Gorgeous colour and knotting! I love how a little thing like a scarf can crank up a simple outfit.

  10. Your outfit is inspirational! You have combined style and comfort into a very flattering ensemble. I have the top in black and the sweater in grey- I definitely need to get the skirt, too. The scarf + booties = perfection.

  11. Marguerite – I tend to stick with ties that I’ve found will stay in place during the day. I may have to make slight adjustments here and there, but usually no more than a fluff or slight twist. Have a great time in Paris and shopping for Repettos!

LBR – thank you so much. (The colors in the picture may be a bit deceiving as I had to tone down contrast to get the details visible, but the cardi is actually more of a dark rust than eggplant. But I love this combo either way.)

hostess – thank you! Scarves are such a great way to add the oomph, aren’t they. And love your newest acquisition!!

LPC – Thanks. Shorter shirt or skirt? I’m reluctant to go much shorter in the skirt for the office. I like a shirt that hits mid-hip generally, trying to lengthen my very short waist.

materfamilias – mille mercis! Le monsieur claims his only interest is in getting my best, most natural smile, to which I say, the heck with the smile, get the outfit!

    spacegeek33 – thanks so much!

Susan Tiner – thanks! I can’t stand anything really bulky around my neck; but it’s looser than it looks, and the softness of the fabric doesn’t irritate. There are a lot of ways to wear scarves that don’t require much neck contact.

WendyB – I think Mr B does a fine job!

style odyssey – thank you. They do try, but I think the men have a tough time understanding what we’re going for. 🙂

    C. – thanks so much! I could definitely see this becoming a signature look too, will have to figure out how to work without the tights during summer months, though.

  12. paisleyapron – thanks! What types of scarves do you wear most?

Miss Janey – thanks so much!

Kady – thank you! I’m 5’1″, so probably am not taller than you. I learned from Imogen the power of a “column” of color, which can make us all look a bit taller.

Susan – thanks! Yes, this skirt can be adjusted easily for length thanks to that waistband.

Who Moved My Birkin – thanks so much! The cardigan is one of my favorites.

Jane W – thank you so much! These are some of my favorite colors.

Kathy – thank you! I highly recommend this skirt for both comfort and style.

  13. A cleverly built outfit for office as well!! I´d love to see you wearing pumps/booties with heel!

  14. Love your outfit, Pseu. Your scarf is perfect with the sweater. Do you have trouble keeping the scarf tied and in position all day? Mine seem to migrate all over my neck. I will be in Paris for Easter weekend this year. Have decided my splurge for this trip will be a pair of Repetto flats for spring. Counting down the days!

  15. The eggplant paired with that apricot is absolutely gorgeous combo. And your comments about le monsieur’s photo angles cracked me up.

  16. I love the cowboy knot — we look forward to the video. I keep thinking I ought to try wearing a scarves but just hate anything near my neck.

The pairing of the scarf color with the cardigan color is perfect!

I agree with LPC that a shorter skirt length might work well.

  17. I am really looking forward to your next tutorial. Scarves are my favorite accessory and your tutorials have gotten me out of my simplistic ties.

  18. Lovely. You must be taller than me, because whenever I try to do the long over slim, I look like a garden gnome.

  19. Very very nice; I particularly like the apricot scarf with that deep plum sweater and the hot little boots – they ground the ensemble so much better than just pumps. That Eileen
Fisher line is really great…I look forward to seeing the rest of the Fall Collection.

  20. Great look on you and nice color pairings for this in-between time of year!

I was going to mention potentially unflattering camera angles in my comment about the recently returned Jacket that Shall Not Be Named, but I’d already put my foot in it.

As you said, probably for the best that you’ve reverted to your former photography duties!

  21. Rubiatonta – thanks so much! It’s very comfortable too.

BigLittleWolf – thank you. EF really seems to have a good design here. I love these tunic tops!

Mean Mama – thank you very much!

Terri – thanks! The scarf definitely pulls it together.

Katriona – thank you. I really love these boots too, and would love to find something similar in a taupe or grey.

Vix – thanks! Grey is a great neutral, and at times easier to wear than black. Camera angles can be tricky, but trust me, I made le monsieur shoot that one from every available angle and it just never got better.

Semi-Expat – merci beaucoup! If I could clone the bottines I would.

Pearl – thank you very much!

  22. Very very stylish & comfy & practical. Hat trick!

Looking fwd to the cowboy scarf tie tutorial.
