Sporty Chic: 3 Stylish Outfits Featuring Athleta Brooklyn Wide Leg Pants

Let me start by saying that I’m generally in the “don’t wear gym clothes as street wear” camp. (I usually work out in an old tee shirt and bike shorts.) But several of you have requested some versatile athleisure looks, so today I’m sharing 3 “sporty chic” outfits, all featuring a pair of Athleta Brooklyn wide leg pants.

I do appreciate the comfort and practicality of some athletic wear. Ease of wear and care can make them great options for travel. But if you want maximum versatility, look for styles that aren’t too yoga-class literal, and are polished enough to be worn with your everyday wardrobe pieces.

3 Sporty Chic outfit ideas, from day to dinner

A few years ago, I shared some outfit ideas with the original Athleta Brooklyn pants. This wide-leg style is a recent addition, and made with the same lightweight, swishy fabric. As with the original, they’re available in Regular, Tall, and Petite sizes (I’m wearing Petite 6), and are 25% off for a limited time! I used them as a base for these 3 sporty chic outfits, and found them incredibly easy to style.

Sightseeing or running errands

Susan B wears a casual sporty chic outfit with Athleta Brooklyn wide leg pants, v-neck tee and colorful sweater tied over the shoulders.
TEE | SWEATER | PANTS | SNEAKERS (SIMILAR)
My sizes: sweater – Medium, tee – Petite Small, pants – Petite 6

Comfort on the move, while still looking put-together. A lightweight sweater can add some color, as well as helping accommodate fluctuating temperatures. While Bella’s the only one doing downward dog here, you could also wear these pants for light yoga, stretching, walking.

Museum visit, coffee meet-up

Susan B. wears a sporty chic outfit combo with a cashmere hoodie, striped tee, wide leg athleisure pants and classic loafers.

My sizes: hoodie – Small, tee – Small, pants – Petite 6

The loafers add some structure and polish to balance out the relaxed pieces. (A derby, Mary Jane, or ballet flat will also work here.) If it warms up, just tie the hoodie over the shoulders or (neatly) around the waist. I love these shorter-length tees from Kule! It’s so hard to find Petite-friendly Breton stripe tops!

Dinner out on the terrace

Susan B. wears a sporty chic, polished casual outfit with a navy base, contrast trim cardigan, and gold flats.
CARDIGAN | TOP | LONG NECKLACE | PANTS | SHOES
My sizes: cardigan – XS, top – Small, pants – Petite 6

Smart casual, with ease. The contrast stripe trim on the cardigan is another “sporty” detail I love. The refined silk top and metallic shoes balance the sporty elements. (Here’s a budget-friendlier cardigan with striped trim. And this zip front style is also good.)

If wide-leg or pleated styles aren’t your thing, these outfits could also work well with the original Brooklyn ankle pants, or the Endless pants (a knit with slightly thicker fabric and more structure). They’re all 25% off, for a limited time.

Would you wear any of these sporty chic outfits? Do you have any favorite athleisure pieces that you pack for travel?

  1. First I love the dinner on the terrace look. It looks like you have on a jumpsuit. And yes I would wear these outfits. At home I wear athletic wear- no apologies. I have a uniform, summer: linen pants or joggers and a t-shirt. Fall and spring a pair of Athleta joggers, button up shirt, usually a jean one, or a cotton sweater. In the winter same pants with a downgraded cashmere sweater. It looks presentable enough for a quick last minute run to the grocery store but also holds up to my messy lifestyle. When I travel I wear something similar

  2. I love these wide pants you’re wearing! They look elegant and comfortable. It has taken a whole season for me to get comfortable with the look of wide-leg pants, whether they are cropped or full length. But now, I love them. They’re comfortable and flattering — if you find a few that work for you. I’m glad the wider legs are sticking around for fall, as I’m interested in seeing how they work (on me) with ankle boots and fall tops.

  3. I would wear all of them. In the Tampa Bay Area, these are late fall and winter outfits, although the pants could be useful in the summer to keep the sun off the legs while still light enough to breathe. Love the dog poses. The stripe trimmed cardigan is particularly flattering on you, btw.

  4. PS Just noticed the top with the v-neck and love that it is a v, sleeveless, and real silk! And washable! Wow! And now on sale for $49.90 !
LOL, a few weeks ago I decided I would commit to not shopping online during Labor Day weekend. Then scuba.com put women’s neoprene vests on sale; then ohmygauze offered up to 75% off so I got another brad vest (can be a dress also) and a slip/slip dress, which can be a great natural layer under not only under other cotton clothes, but also under a cashmere dress in the winter; and now I see this Quince v top in a lot of colors….

  5. These are still too sporty for me but hey, I have plenty trousers which I love and I am sure you hate haha.

  6. I’m in love with Athleta Brooklyn pants. I travel with them exclusively as they take no room. I can dress them up and down easily. Big fan! I’ll try a wide leg this fall.

  7. I often wear my navy Brooklyn pants on a plane, especially for international flights. They look more polished than leggings but provide a comfortable waistband summer and winter.

  8. Love all these looks on you. Upon your recommendation long ago I am the happy owner of the OG Brooklyn pants (both navy and black) and usually wear them on ‘long haul’ flights…I’ve even worn them ‘dressier’ when in a pinch…I feel the stripe down the side mimics a ‘tuxedo pant’ elevates them. As always, Susan, your style is fabulous; Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. A friend gave me a pair of these pants in black and I love them! Very effective for summer parties with either a floaty short tank or close fitting patterned sweater. They even rustle like a party dress. Great for travel. Not sure I could pull off the longer sweater as you did — it looks good on you so I will try again.

  10. I recently purchased the Vuori Villa Cargo jogger and I love them! I’m an M and they fit TTS. They are soft, roomy but not baggy, and they launder beautifully. I’m traveling in a few weeks and they will be the first item I pack!

  11. I love the Athleta pants! I have several pairs, & I call them Magic Pants because you can wear them on an overnight flight, sleep in them, and they are comfy and don’t wrinkle! And if you happen to spill a glass of red wine on them, you can rinse them out in the hotel sink and they’ll dry very quickly (don’t ask me how I know that). I do like wide leg pants (if they’re full length) but don’t like them for travel; too hard to keep them off the floor when using airplane bathrooms!

  12. I’m a carry-on only traveler whose trips can be 3+ weeks, so the original Brooklyn pants have been a lifesaver. They are versatile and incredibly lightweight. I’ve worn the black version with a blazer/tank and ballet flats to a Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris, as well as for sightseeing and hikes. Would I prefer something dressier or more original? Yes, but they work. And they dry quickly after handwashing.

  13. Great post! Love the outfits and the dog yoga pose made me laugh out loud. You reminded me of the Athleta brand, followed your example and bought the wide leg navy pants with the navy silk top. They are just what I need this fall and appreciate that I don’t have to do the shopping.

  14. I own nine pairs of Athleta wide-leg pants in various colors and styles and I live in them most of the year. I find the style suits my slim pear shape and they are light enough to wear during a Phoenix summer. I tuck a tank top in or tie a looser top at the waist. Ready for anything!

  15. I generally travel in jeans and wear athletic clothes to exercise. I’m not a fan of these looks — too athleisure for me and the pants are way too baggy. You could almost fit another Susan in there with you. The cardigan and silk shirt are great but would IMHO look better with slimmer trousers. I have a half dozen wide leg pants / jeans, but they are all more tailored. I never go anywhere other than the gym in my joggers. They are still “sweatpants” to me.

  16. For me athleisure looks OK in posed photos with the wearer looking polished, BUT……..I’ve yet to see anyone outside who appears like that. Sorry to offend any followers but unless the look is polished up they just come across as disinterested in their appearance. Chacun à son goùt.

    1. Angela is spot on here. If you’re going to wear athleisure, the rest of your look has got to be perfect. Perfect hair, perfect makeup, perfect accessories. I caught sight of myself in a store mirror, wearing a hoodie, and that was the end of that.

  17. I wish those pants looked as cute on me as they do on you! I tried them in two sizes: no joy. (Too poofy around the midsection.) Very disappointing, because I love the fabric and the Aspen Olive color. The search continues!

  18. I noticed these pants are 86% polyester. If one runs warm 🙂 would they be a bad choice? I lean towards natural fiber or blends

    1. Hi SF-dre, I wore them yesterday with temperatures in the mid-80’s and found them perfectly comfortable. The fabric is incredibly light and the cut allows for plenty of airflow.
