These days when we do go out, it’s usually a spur-of-the-moment decision. I like being able to get dressed without a lot of fuss, so have been “test driving” some date night outfit combos to have on deck.
earrings | jacket | necklace | necklace (c/o) | sweater | bracelet | jeans (similar) | boots
Since jeans-and-a-sweater is my at-home default setting during cooler months, I wanted to use that as the starting point for this outfit. I brought in some color with this red cotton knit moto jacket, purchased in 2019. (Hubby always likes me in red.) I’ve had these jeans for over 5 years now, and they’re still a favorite pair.
This bold statement necklace from French Kande (gifted) adds a little sparkle to the mix. I layered it with some lighter pieces already in my collection. The grayish stones are Labradorite, one of my favorites! (Yes, there are some grays in the Spring palette; this is one of them.)
The snake print boots add the exclamation point, and “call back” to the color of the sweater. (These are weatherproof, and comfortable enough to travel with.)
Unique jewelry for date night (or any time)
I’ve been a big fan of French Kande jewelry for many years now. Their designs are unique, dress up or down, and there’s a little something for every style. I always get compliments on these pieces. Kande’s new collection, La Sorbonne, is stunning! If you prefer cool and silver-toned jewelry, this one is for you!
For those who prefer more delicate styles, check out the FK Petite line.
For a limited time, you can take advantage of French Kande’s Valentine’s Day promo. Get either this jasper lariat necklace ($30) or a quartz cuvee bracelet ($15) with any purchase of $250 or more. These pieces are great for layering and these promotions always sell out, so don’t wait.
All French Kande pieces are designed and made in the US. Many of the pieces offer a choice of medallions so you can create a truly custom design.
Do you have a go-to date night outfit?
Dear Susan, I think this is your best outfit ever. The color of the jacket and sweater are a beautiful complement to your skin and you are glowing. It is a lovely smart casual look. I appreciate your inspiration and you have helped me create some more updated, stylish looks. Thank you.
I love this outfit! It looks modern and classic at the same time! Your accessories are always so lovely, too.
Susan—can you tell us more about the Quince sweater? How does it run for a shorter person—overall length and sleeves? May I ask what size you’re wearing and is it a slimmer or roomier fit? Thank you
Author
Hi Rose, I’m wearing the size M. I’m 5’1″ and find the sleeve and overall length are perfect. It’s not an oversized fit, and the sleeves are set in so it layers nicely underneath a jacket. I like just a little bit of ease over the torso, so sized up to the M.
Hi Rose, I finally broke down and ordered two, the tan and the navy. I was so pleased with the fit, I am 5’8”. and about 150. I ordered the medium, fit great, sleeves were long enough, I would definitely recommend this sweater. Don’t be put off by the price, they are beautifully made.
On Susan’s recommendation, I purchased the same sweater in navy, size medium. I am 5’1″ as well, usually size S-M in tops. I really like the fit – and the quality for the price. Be forewarned that they do not ship quickly.
WowzieII That is a fabulous outfit!
Sorry…those were to be exclamation marks behind Wowzie!!
I love today’s outfit! I have the same Kettlewell moto jacket in Rust and it is one of my favorite pieces–so easy to dress up or down and the rust color is one of my best. I have worn a variation of this outfit many times. When the weather is a little warmer, I also like to style it with a sleeveless shell, skinny pants and leopard loafers. BTW, you look great in red. I hope you keep this jacket on a regular rotation in your wardrobe!
Love this look – pops of red just always seem to work. You are introducing me to many new shops – so much fun! Thank you!
Great outfit! Would love to see the fit of the sweater without the jacket to get an idea of how the bigger size drapes.
Susan great outfit! I’m wondering about the aquatalia boots—I can’t recall if you need to size up? I really like the FK jewelry but it’s just not my style. Under Annie’s tutelage I’ve been getting Extasia necklaces.

Thanks, Sally! In most Aquatalia styles I wear a 7-1/2, which is my usual size for closed-toe shoes.
Thank you! They are pretty snazzy and a nice low heel!
Great outfit on you – you look vibrant! Love the jacket and the boots.
I am not a blue jeans person, but I must admit that this is one of your best looks. Everything works together without looking overdone. What kind of handbag would you carry? I’m thinking something slim and sleek, maybe a clutch.
Susan, what is that lovely lipstick you are wearing?
Author
Hi Janet, thanks! It’s Chantecaille Lip Chic in “Sunrise.” LINK
This is such a pretty look Susan. I am loving any red I see added to your outfits- it’s inspiring me to find red items too. The trick for me is finding the right shade of red. Also, going grey is great, I highly recommend it. I had my hairdresser chop off everything but my grey 2-3″ roots in the brief re-opening of mid-2020, but I don’t think I would have had the courage if not for the shutdown! It does change some colors that I could wear as a blonde, but not much.
You look stunning in your colours and gamine style. Red Leopard did a great job in selecting both with you.
What size are you wearing in the knit jacket please? How does it run if wearing a sweater underneath
Author
Hi Lizzy, I’m wearing the Small. It comfortably fits over a lightweight sweater. If you want to wear over a thicker or bulkier sweater, you might want to size up.
Great look, Susan: as others have said, this is one of your best! The shoes tying in with your sweater + the blast of red in the moto jacket is terrific!
Just wish the Kettlewell jacket was still available, but it is essentially sold out in its many colors. If you happen to notice that it is restocked, would you let us know? — such a great jacket (have one in pleather from Chico’s, but the heavy knit in colors is more flexible). Thanks!
A lovely combination. I would have chosen an off-white top underneath the jacket but this works too. Thanks for reminding me to wear the French Kande jewellery a bit more. As I still really like my set.
