A Double Denim Outfit, and the One Piece of Shopping Advice I Always Give My Clients…
Double denim is back, but (in my opinion) can be challenging to pull off without looking costume-y. I like to mix my classic blue denim with other washes or colors to keep from looking like a Y2K throwback. Here’s one idea for a timeless double denim outfit…
I purchased this Marc Cain beige denim jacket in London last fall. (I fell in love with those sleeves!) It was already too cool to wear it much, so it’s been biding its time in my closet, waiting for warmer weather. I always advise my color and style clients to “buy it when you find it.” Meaning: if the color, fit, and style are good for you, don’t pass something up just because it’s out of season. Once the weather changes, you’ll be glad you have it.
Building a wardrobe in your best colors and styles is a long-term process. You may find several pieces in one season (or when one of your best colors or styles is on-trend). And a season or two may pass where nothing appeals. But when you’re working from your color palette and Style Personality profile, in time you’ll find that you’ve created a cohesive wardrobe. And everything (old and new) will work together.
More not-your-standard-denim jackets

It’s still pretty cool here in the mornings and evenings, and I get chilled easily. So I find a silk scarf is just enough to keep my neck comfortable. This one’s from Castanohel (gifted) from their Mrs. Robinson collection featuring warm and cool leopard prints).
I also wanted to show you just how versatile this Lo & Sons bag is. I originally wore it here as a crossbody. But you can also remove the strap completely, snap the two ends together, and you have a cute (and functional) handbag for going out.
Another thought on wearing a double denim outfit in a more modern way: if you want to go with all blue, choose a top that’s not a standard trucker jacket or work shirt.
How do you feel about double denim? Is it something you’d wear or a style no-go?

I love denim on denim. My most worn item of clothing is a denim shirt-I have 4. Right now my favorite combination is a denim shirt, trouser jeans, silver or black Gizeh Birks. In cooler months I throw a denim jacket, field jacket, blazer or lady jacket over it. My inspiration is Ralph Lauren with a slight edge. Without the price tag.
Not a no-no for anyone else but I like denim which is not blue or white and the non standard styles of jacket you have shown are far more interesting than the usual !
Not a fan of the all-denim look, which looks too gimmicky to me, but I do like the trend of the monochrome look as an easy way to make an outfit look more pulled together. The colors don’t have to match exactly, just visually be in the same hue, like cream and light tan or even black and dark navy. Doing this has really helped me in paring down my travel wardrobe too.
I’m generally not a fan of double denim, but I love your look with that gorgeous jacket. I recently bought an apple red denim jacket, and I’ll wear it with both blue, white, or even gray jeans. I might wear a denim shirt with white jeans as well. Sometimes a denim look w/o denim is nice: I have a drapey tencel shirt that’s a light denim color, but it’s a different texture that works with denim jeans.
Hi Susan: you look great. I’m not a fan of double denim for myself. I would wear the Two Palms linen jacket with a pair of jeans. I was just having this conversation with my walking buddy yesterday: she and I like denim jackets but never seem to wear them–too stiff, too much denim, not warm enough, not cool enough–haha! I have a nice fitted denim jacket but really don’t wear it much.
Hi Sally, I’m thinking along the same lines as you. I have the Two Palms linen jacket in natural, and it goes nicely with my dark wash jeans, black jeans, and olive pants.
I’m wearing double denim as I type this. I always wear jeans and my denim jacket is just the right weight for today’s weather. I sometimes think is this a fashion no-no? Then I say to myself, who cares about some arbitrary “rule”?
I wear a lot of double denim in Sonoma, CA.–perfect for our lifestyle and climate. Black jean jacket with black jeans, mixing all kinds of shirts, shoes, boots, sandals for many looks. Also love blue jeans with a denim shirt worn as a jacket over a tee, or jeans with a plaid Frank and Eileen shirt over a tee, with a long denim jacket worn as outerwear. I could go on…white jeans with a F and E black denim shirt with white buttons and sandals is my favorite right now.
I used to buy a lot of Marc Cain when I lived in London. I can’t seem to find any US retailers. Any ideas?
I wish that brand was more available here! Their clothes are both stylish and practical. The only online source I’ve found here is Halsbrook.com.
Brilliant, thank you!
I will never do double denim. Not my colours and not my style. But hey, you showed how it should be done very well.
The possibilities of that bag add a lot to the desirability.
