A Peek Inside Our 3-Day Color Event

Color has the power to change how we look and feel. If you’re wearing colors that are in harmony with your coloring, you’ll look more vibrant, healthy, energized, and rested. The wrong colors (for you) can make you look tired, ill, drained, and even a little grouchy. I’ve seen it time and time again: when someone suddenly has one of their “best” colors near their face, it’s like a light has been switched on. I see it, they see it, and it’s like magic.

A couple of weeks ago, Manina from Red Leopard and I hosted a 3-day Color Event in Los Angeles. We met and did color analysis for several people each day, and it was such a blast!

Three colorful days…

The event was held at Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art Gallery in Century City. This bright and color-filled space was the perfect venue!

I had my color analysis with Red Leopard in 2019, and it was (literally) life-changing. I knew all of the black I’d been wearing was doing me no favors, but couldn’t seem to break out of the rut. Almost every time I tried to wear color, it just felt wrong. Learning my best colors, (I’m a Golden Spring, in the warmest end of the Spring palette) and beginning to incorporate them into my wardrobe gave me such a lift.

I knew I wanted to learn color analysis to be able to share not only with clients, but with you, on the blog. I had scheduled to attend a training seminar with Red Leopard…in April of 2020. But then the pandemic hit, and it was a full two years before I could finally attend and complete the course in London in early 2022. It was an intense two weeks and my head was spinning every night, but I’m so glad I did it. Here’s why….

It’s just so much fun to see how people light up when surrounded by their best colors!

Professional makeup artist Brian Haugen (By Brian) was on hand to do makeup in each person’s seasonal color palette, which made the event even more special for our clients.

It was a lively 3 days, both exhilarating and exhausting. We had SUCH fun, we’ve decided to try to make this an annual event! But if you can’t wait a whole year, and live near or will be visiting the Los Angeles area, I have appointments for in-person Color Analysis available beginning in June. Just email me: [email protected] and I’ll send you a link to my calendar.

Here’s a quick recap that I posted afterwards on Instagram:

Working with and wearing color can be so uplifting and energizing. But one of the best things about building a wardrobe within your seasonal color palette is that everything works together. So you can do more with less, and build a beautiful and functional wardrobe over time. I truly believe it’s a worthwhile investment in yourself.

Have you had a personal color analysis? How did you feel about the results?

  1. Susan, I’ve been following you for years. I too wore a lot of black/gray/navy and I enjoyed your (old) blog for that reason. When you began to incorporate color, I frankly, felt let down, however I continued to read your blog. After watching one of your videos showing the difference that color can make, I contacted you and you gave me the name of a House of Colour person in my area. What a game changer! I wish I would have done it years ago. I too am a spring and my style is classic & elegant. I have enjoyed refining my wardrobe, and receiving compliments from my friends & family. Shopping & dressing are effortless now!. Thank you!

    1. Hi Pam, that’s wonderful! I’m so glad you found someone in you area and found it a positive experience.

  2. I’ve always heard that if the veins in your wrist appear green, then you’re an autumn or spring and if they appear blue then you’re a winter or summer…..well, I have some that are blue & some greenish…..so I have no idea where that leaves me Would love a color analysis to find out!

    1. Hi Cherrie, the “veins” thing is meaningless. Most of us have veins that range in color. It’s really about how the colors we wear reflect light back up onto our faces, and enhance or detract from our unique skintones.

      1. Susan, thank you for confirming my suspicions that the veins advice is not accurate at all! I had my colors done back in the 80s by a Color Me Beautiful specialist and I’m a Spring, no doubts about it. No ifs or maybes. But the veins in my wrist are totally blue. So I always found ladies being advised to look at their wrists to be bad advice. So happy to see that you agree!

  3. I had it done in the 1980s with five other women. We were instructed to wear no makeup for the session so I couldn’t stand to look in the mirror when I was being analyzed. But I got to observe the other five being analyzed so I could see the difference the correct colors made. It totally changed the way I shopped for clothes and well worth the money.

  4. Hi Susan – you conducted a color analysis on me in November 2022. I loved everything about the experience and can attest to the difference it makes knowing ones best colors when building a cohesive wardrobe. The items in my closet now work for me and I feel like a million bucks when wearing what complements me the most.

    1. Hi Joan, I’m so thrilled to hear it! It was such a pleasure meeting you and helping find your best colors.

  5. Your color-based posts were a revelation. I had self-diagnosed as a Summer, but I had a closet full of warm colors that I loved. I tried buying clothes in my “correct” pallette, but they were failures. Lavender drains the life out of me. Your posts got me to re-think, and I realized that I was actually a Spring. The pastels had thrown me off course. Once I got beyond them to the Bright and Golden colors, I was at home!

  6. I totally agree about having the right colour analysis done and enjoyed. My 2022 spring visit to Manina at Red Leopard in London was transformational. I am a warm Autumn, and have many pieces very like the ones you show, Susan, in your seasonal palettes. So easy to coordinate clothing and feel confident .

  7. I had a ball at your recent LA event and left feeling happy and “energized” by the new information. The make- up session with Brian was so helpful and fun, too. I’ve begun carrying my color wallet everywhere!

Thank you, all, for your warm welcomes.

  8. You are so right, color analysis is life changing. I struggled for years. Black and navy always made me look ill. Pastels looked funny. Bright colors washed me out. Other than chocolate brown, teal and coral, I could not figure out what looked right on me. I finally decided to get professional help. After an analysis with a HoC stylist, I learned I was a Blue Autumn. So yes, I still wear those three colors 🙂 but I added many more flattering colors to my wardrobe. What a difference it made!

  9. I am quite interested in color analysis; particularly what you are trained in. You and Pamela Luttrell are blogs that I have followed for several years. Both of you are impressive and marvelous in this area of expertise.
But I have a challenge, a huge one! I live in south Georgia, about 50 miles from Tallahassee. Are you aware of anyone that is trained by Red Leopard that is near me; perhaps within 100 to 150 miles? I have 2 daughters and several friends that are interested.
    Thank you.

  10. I need to engage your services too. I never had the colour theory explained to me and I think that’s a basic. The colour analysis which I’ve had was good and I learned a lot but I think your analysis is better. More nuanced.

  11. I had my colors done ten or more years ago by a House of Colour person, and it was very helpful to me as a New Yorker to free myself from all the black that is so common there. But although I am supposedly a “light spring”, I find that some of the autumn colors are very good for me. One of these days I may try again to learn more about what my best colors truly are.
