Casually polished: what to wear when you don’t want to have to think about it

Some days just require a no-fuss approach to getting dressed. We need clothes that are comfortable and functional, but we still want to look put-together. Here are 3 easy, casual outfit ideas for women over 50.

As part of my home re-decorating project, I’ve been having the entire interior repainted. Which, as it turns out, is more than a little bit disruptive. 😉 Especially the last few days, as they’ve been working in my bedroom/bathroom. So before they started (and my closet became inaccessible), I grabbed a few pieces I’ve been wearing on repeat. It prompted me to think about those “in a pinch” combos that always seem to work.

Easy, casual outfit ideas for women over 50

I think we all have those days (or weeks) when we just don’t have the bandwidth to get creative with our style. We need to throw on some clothes and just get on with things. But even on those days, I find looking neat, put-together, and intentional really does help my mood and outlook. So I’ve come up with a few go-to combos or formulas that take the guesswork out.

#1 – Coordinated neutrals

One of my foolproof outfit formulas is to start with a column of color. Here I’ve selected a navy sweater and a darker wash jean. I’ve added a relaxed knit blazer in a lighter color for a bit of soft structure. This one’s warm, but lightweight enough to layer under your winter coat. (I’d suggest sizing down for a more fitted look.)

More knit jacket/blazer options:

Sticking to a maximum of 3 neutrals also helps pull the look together. The bag and belt coordinate, as do the jacket and sneakers. You can use any neutrals that work with your seasonal palette. A pair of simple but visible earrings adds a finishing touch.

#2 – The Full Monochrome

A monochromatic look (all one color or black & white) takes much of the guesswork out. Black is easiest, but navy, gray, brown or camel will work as well. To keep a monochromatic outfit from looking flat, be sure to mix up the textures a bit.

#3 – Classic casual

Who says we have to reinvent the wheel every time we get dressed? Here’s a timeless, classic casual look that comes together in a snap. The collared shirt and loafers add some structure and polish, without being fussy. And yes, feel free to wear socks with those loafers.

While it might be a little boring to dress this way day in and day out, it’s helpful to have some simple-but-effective outfit ideas in our back pocket for those no-brainer days.

  1. I cleaned out my closet (after reading your post), and now choosing something to wear is much simpler. I love a column of color, it makes whatever you’re wearing elevated. Sometimes I follow your suggestion to add a third piece to help bring the outfit together and sometimes I am too lazy LOL. Cheers

  2. Susan sorry to bother you. I can’t open some links because of the high ad blocker on my computer. What are the jeans in the #1 coordinated neutrals. Lots of time my system won’t open items from J Crew (for some reason) so I wondered if that is where they are from. Sorry to be such high maintenance. I look forward to your posts everyday! Thank you.

    1. Beverly, I have the same problem with Nordstrom. I’m not sure what causes it. You can try doing a right click on your mouse over the item you’re interested in. One of your choices should be “open link in incognito window”. Click on that and see if that window opens on the item you’re interested in.

  3. These are the most helpful posts and not even close to being boring. As I get older the power of tried and true has more meaning. I find fixing my hair and adding a little makeup helps too. My mom always relied on a little blush and lipstick even when she was in a senior care facility.

  4. Great outfit inspirations. Not boring at all. Love the column of color and no more than 3 neutrals tips. I’ll be starting my closet organization in a few weeks. I have to make it easier to put together daily outfits. So many things in there just aren’t being used, or work for me anymore. Thank you for always being such an inspiration.

  5. Nice! But I think you need to do one on extremely cold weather. Yeah it’s been ok where you live. Many of us are wearing two sweaters and the thickest sweatpants we have.

    1. We’ve been warmer than normal recently in RI but are heading for cold weather this week. I so agree with you. I love Susan’s looks, but I always wear a quilted vest over my shirts and sweaters – down if I am wearing it out and lighter ones for inside. I never wear loafers outside in the winter b/c … snow, slush, dirt, mud.

  6. I like all these looks, and it’s an easy way to dress for most days: jeans, shirts, sweaters, jacket or vest. I’ve never seen the need for so many handbags; let’s simplify and be sustainable.
Susan, do you like the J Crew jeans with the weird pockets in the front? You can’t put anything in them, including your hands., can you?

    1. Hi Maeve, thanks! I’m not crazy about those front patch pockets on jeans myself. They call too much attention to my stomach/hips, and (as you mentioned) aren’t useful.

    2. Maeve,
I don’t get the front pockets either. So many times I’ll see a jean and like the style and color but then they have the front pocket. Also, I wish manufacturers would stop fraying so many jeans. Frayed jeans are something I can do myself, if I so choose, but I usually don’t.

  7. How do you like the Frank & Eileen jacket? Do you prefer the cropped version to the longer style? I’ve generally liked their tops though sometimes the all-cotton fabrics without stretch are not as comfortable.

    1. Hi Laura, I really like this shorter cut! It works better for me than the longer styles. Now I just hope they add more colors… 😉

  8. Susan what a perfect post today! You must have channeled my angst! What do I wear for a spa birthday celebration with dinner and lunch out in Napa and staying at beautiful Indian Springs in Calistoga ! You are brilliant. Thank you for you style recommendations. I do hope the painting disruption ends soon. Your closet and work space look really lovely. I still would love to come and visit and get your take on my colors and style .

  9. All these options are great. I carry a handbag for my Asthma medication and the spacer that goes with it. But only have one bag as I find choosing a handbag stressfull. I like one I can wear crossbody for hands free ease. Unless it is an essential winter coat, I find layering tricky as I have a large bust. This Christmas I brought myself an informal linen jacket (Summer here) to put over t-shirts. But I haven’t worn it as the fabric hasn’t softened with wash and I’m left with a tent-like effect hanging from my bust. I find cardigans are a little more forgiving. I cannot seem to get smart casual sorted – despite effort. I feel at 52 I should have this sorted by now.

  10. I love these posts, but I feel like I’m saving so many of these ideas for “five years from now!” I’m still working, and my job requires one wardrobe; my “weekend life” requires another; and my “around the yard” work requires a third. I’d love to downsize my closet and create a true capsule wardrobe, but it’s just not feasible with all these needs right now. One day… maybe! Thanks, Susan!

  11. You’re a mind reader Susan, I’ve just been into town in an easy casual outfit to beat the heat – cream T-shirt, clay wide-legged pants, light animal print sandals and tan bag…I knew something was missing! Next time I’ll add my wee dangly pearl earrings-thanks for the tip!
    Best wishes,

  12. Hi Susan,
In response to your question, what are go-to easy and polished outfit ideas: dresses!
Shoes & tights, jewelry/scarf, bag: done.

This time of year, knit dresses can be elegant and cozy, successful in any situation short of suits-required. They do well with boots that can be stylish, warm, and practical for walking in snow or ice. They accommodate variations in figure and come in a wide variety of styles.

You have said you rarely wear dresses, and I can see how they might not be harmonious for the Gamine. For me they give a new, positive, meaning to the phrase “fast fashion.” My only regret is that knits are hard to hem. Midi is everywhere now, but I look better with an above-the-knee hem.

On a related note, thank you for this blog. I don’t think we wear any of the same things—I am a different palette and style personality —-but I always get a lot out of your approach and framing. Reading this blog has helped me refine and focus my style with higher quality and a smaller closet.

  13. Hi Susan, I appreciate your posts. As a retired lady, these kind of outfits are my go to for lunch or coffee out with my friends. Elegantly casual. I do have to say that your choices are often a bit pricey for me, even on sale, but they give me ideas. For example the jeans in your first set are over $100 at J. Crew. I have similar jeans that I recently purchased from Lands End. They’re high waisted and wide legs. They’re really comfortable. The darker wash looks good. On sale $54-$72. Women’s Recover High Rise Wide Leg Blue Jeans. I like the quality of a lot of their clothes. I really like their cashmere. Been wearing it for years.

  14. You are right, there are days that you don’t want to “style” your outfit but just throw something on. Yet, you want to look good. Thanks for the examples. I always forget to add tan as a colour with blue and white/cream. Makes all the difference.

  15. Hello Susan,
On the opening photo to your email I see a tee with what looks like a map of Paris print. I don’t see it again in the post.
    Where can I find this?
